To the ones listening in after the 2018 "metoo" controversy that claimed this song is about ignoring a womans right to say no: Listen to the lyrics. The song is quite the opposite. The woman wants to stay with the man, but she has to pretend she doesn't due to what other might think. "Maybe just one drink more", "maby just one sigarette more", and lots of references to what the father, brother aunt and other would think if she stayed. "I wish I knew how to break this spell", she's in love. "I ought to say no no no" because of others she feels she should but she doesn't. Even the "what's in this drink" is her building her defence, to other people she can say she was drunk if she spent the night. It ends with both of them singing together It's cold outside, they agreed on the formal excuses and now she can do what she really wanted, spend the night with him. Not because he wants, but because she wants. You have to be blind (or deaf) to think this is about a man abusing a woman. It's about a strong woman staying with a man in a time where society said she did not have that choice.

Great song, but it is obviously not targetted towards somebody's wife
@natebroadus84745 жыл бұрын
@@123axel123 depends on the stage of their relationship. He might have been reminiscing. Either way, what we know for a fact is Frank Loesser wrote the song in 1944 for he and his wife to perform at parties. The theme has nothing to do with sexual assault, either. It's about a man urging his girlfriend/fiance to stay, rather than go out in a blizzard. For unmarried couples to spend the night together in that era was considered scandalous. The woman makes mention of it numerous times in the song, yet even she displays signs she wants to stay ("So really I'd better scurry... Well, maybe just a half a drink more"). This whole stupid thing hinges on one single line in the song ("-say, what's in this drink?"), which is about as vague as you can possibly get and entirely driven by modern perspectives of date rape drugs. Maybe she's a light weight? Maybe it was a particularly strong vintage? Notice that, unlike most people under a drug, she never loses her faculties ("I ought to say no-no-no sir... At least I'm gonna say that I tried.") She's already thinking about what she is going to say the next day to explain why she spent the night in case anyone asks, ffs. Yet as much as she claims to protest, SHE keeps making the decision to stay ("My maiden aunt's mind is vicious... Well, maybe just a cigarette more."). He wants her to stay and she wants to stay -- they're just pondering how it might look based on societal standards of the time. This whole so-called rape connection is based in zero fact. You might as well try to get Somebody's Watching Me banned for promoting stalking.

Amazing! What a wonderful choreography! The act shows how little kids can portray grown ups at their best. The director of this little show reminds me of the good old days. The art of dancing and singing together with acting shows how wonderful God is. I always consider God is the source of all our talents. The glory of man's ability to make things happen the way it should be is because everything is inspired by Him. Once again, I am pretty much delighted of this short video clip . This song was composed by a man named Mr Lester who in the year 1944 for a Broadway play he wrote this song. It has always been a lovely song during🌲 Christmas time and I think the reason is that we all use our own imaginations and our own thoughts and a bit of wit🎀 to make it as wonderful and as long-lasting as it is today. I hate videos because they are always someone's else take n 💯 vision of a song and making it into a video which is just some stupid morons interpretation of what the song is about. That's not the way I see this song as shown on this video. A horrible music video 😂📸 however still a wonderful song!! That has lasted close to 80 years for all of us to hear!! A true classic 🌺🌹🌹🌹🌺🌺🌺
@The_Rusalka Жыл бұрын
@@dorothykuveke1217 It’s just the creators’ personal interpretation. Most people would not imagine the song with two kids in a hotel. Just because there is a music video doesn’t mean that that’s the only way a song can be interpreted (some things can exist at the same time), but people can still find this video cute. Look, this is a classic Christmas song. It isn’t inappropriate. It’s a game. They’re teasing and having fun, that’s the point of the song. I like listening to it, and I will continue to do so. Edit: I believe that the way much of this song was intended to be taken doesn’t make sense in our time. When the song was written, it wasn’t socially acceptable for women to spend the night at a mans house. Therefore, he’s offering excuses ‘pneumonia, it’s too cold, I’m worried, there are no cabs ’, that she could offer to others. And hence ‘my father will pacing the floor, my maiden aunts mind is vicious, the neighbours might think, they’ll be plenty of talk tomorrow’. She’s more worried of what might be said if people find out she stayed the night. The ‘what’s in this drink’ was an idiom suggesting that her actions could be blamed on the alcohol, even if in fact there was none in the drink.

I like this music video by Michael SO MUCH MORE. The song comes off as light hearted and cute. When you watch the original music video, it does seem a little creepy. when she says "maybe just have a drink more" the man points to a corner to get her to look there as he says "put some records on while I pour" and he grabs a glass that's already prepared on the table next to him quickly without making it obvious or looking at it, and distracting her by pointing to the opposite direction of where the drink is, telling her to "put some records on while I pour" so he can get it without her noticing. that particular scene in the old music video version creeped me out. then immediately he hands it to her the drink as she talks about what the neighbors might think. As she's about to sip, she stops before it touched her lips and says "say whats in this drink" THE OLD MUSIC VIDEO IS SO BAD LOL OMG - I hope michael is trying to put more focus on the beauty of the song itself, to help people forget the original music video that was attributed to it. Old music video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX6pe2qfmsSsfbc crazy how times change so drastically as to what is acceptable in society, and what isn't. Edit: he even changed those lyrics. to "maybe one soda pop more". and the "say whats in this drink' changed to "say, was that a wink?" they should have encouraged this version of the song, I bet nobody noticed these small changes he made so that the old implications of the song wouldn't apply to his version.

This song was written by a guy specifically to sing with his wife. I like to think the guy is worried about the women because she wants to go outside in the freezing cold, and roads can be really dangerous in the winter, so i like to think the guy is just being worried and doesn't want the lady to die in the cold. Sorry about my grammar

The lost art of a man wooing a woman. I admit I'm a feminist moderate democrat. And I met my husband of 36 years so far by telling his brother I want to meet "that cute boy" his brother. But nothing pleases me more when hubby "chases" me, and I mean for other things, not just sex. It is a dance of love, care, interest, laughter, tough guy with the tender insides. I feel sad for young couples who aren't comfortable "courting" like back in the old days. And here's something a lot of guys don't get: Many, but not all, women LIKE to be wooed, to get attention, to be wanted, craved so bad the guy just cant stand it! Women don't mean to cause pain, but what leads up to love and sex is a dance just like exotic birds in the rain forest. The flashiest bird gets the girl! This song is SWEET, and is infinitely better than rap that calls women bitches and hoes and is all about brutality.

Idk why people say this song is about rape. This song is amazing and people have different meaning of the song. For some its about rape, the others its about Christmas and the guy is in love with the girl thats why he doesnt want her to leave. I respect everyones definition of the song. For me, i think this song is beautiful and its not bout rape.

To people who say this is a date rape song, ask yourself these questions: 1) Do you know where this song comes from? 2) Do you know the context of this song in the musical it's from? 3) Did you know the roles are meant to be reversed halfway through the song? (Guy singing to girl, then the last half is girl trying to keep the guy inside) To answer all those questions: 1) This song is from the musical "Neptune's Daughter" and the song is written by Frank Loesser, the guy who wrote Guys and Dolls. 2) The song is supposed to illustrate the difference between a smooth couple and a clumsy one. 3) In the musical, the song is first sung by an attractive couple who both want to stay inside, but want to play hard to get. Immediately after, a comical rendition is sung by a clumsy and old couple with the gender roles reversed. In neither version do they imply rape and people choose to ignore the latter half because it's convenient for "date-rape" argument's sake. *Edit*: I misinterpreted the part of the song sung with reversed roles, so I have edited the answer to question 3.
@gojida22073 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but spiking drinks was not a thing when the song was written. The "what's in this drink" refers to it being very alcoholic
@madbell60993 жыл бұрын
@@gojida2207 in context of the time, “What’s in this drink?” Was a common joke when people would use alcohol to explain away their actions, when in actuality the drink contained very little to no alcohol at all. It’s commonly misconstrued in the date rape argument. While I could see how it conveys rape culture (a woman clearly can’t say yes, so then she can’t clearly say no either, both because of societal expectations), I definitely agree that the song is not rape and was instead written in a king gone era of “propriety”
@normagruden3 жыл бұрын
The second half of the song really doesn't sound like a wife trying to convince her husband to not go to work. "how lucky that you dropped in, so nice and warm" why would a wife say that to her husband if he lives there? And it ends with "ok just another drink then" obviously the whole song is about a date. I don't think they meant anything bad by it when it was written lol not at all, but the lyrics when she says "i ought to say no no no sir" and then he says "mind if i move closer?" and the again she says later "the answer is no sir" and "you're very pushy" and he says "I like to think of it as opportunistic"... All these lyrics sound very creepy and wrong to me lol. The lyric about the drink i agree with, I don't think that lyric was meant as anything but alcohol.
@EpicFoXD3333 жыл бұрын
N G it sounds creepy to me too! Id have to watch this play, If I get the same creeper vibes I dont think the idea of this song being a problem should be swept under the carpet.
@hippoge79873 жыл бұрын
@@normagruden Actually, I was wrong about the song being cut in half, in fact the whole song is sung through by an attractive couple playing hard to get and the second half is sung by a clumsy couple with the genders reversed. Also, those "you're very pushy" and "I like to think of it as opportunistic" were actually added by Michael Buble and Idina Menzel. The original version does not have those lyrics.
