I'm so incredibly tired of reading comments about how Idina "wasn't good" or some BS. I saw Idina live numerous times at various points throughout her Wicked run. Some of her richest vocal performances were in December 2004/January 2005, and I NEVER, NEVER saw her give a performance that was lackluster. The "narrative" that she was lackluster over time seems to be accepted as truth these days, but trust me when I say it wasn't true. Maybe people can point to criticisms about vocal technique, but goddammit armchair criticism gets old real quick.
@realiteaparody91982 жыл бұрын
You’re so right! Also I’d like to point out that it seems like the people creating this narrative NEVER witnessed any of Idina’s live performances, or ANY live Wicked show for that matter. The only reference points they have are old KZbin videos with not the best quality. I will never understand people’s need to diminish someone’s talent and legacy just because they favor another performer.

People gotta remember these bootleg recordings have awful audio quality. Including the audio peaking (cutting out/sounding flat) during the most magnificent belted notes - because they are literally too much for a camcorder mic to handle.

You got to see Idina live?! You are so lucky! That would be my dream! I am going to see Wicked soon when it comes to my city. I can’t wait to see it. I have been wanted to for a long time, and I never have yet. So I’ve been bingeing all the songs lol. And why would people give h@te to Idina?! She is amazing ❤

She ate that role. She totally nailed it. Her stage presence is impecable. Just look at the madness in her face during this song. When I see Idina playing this role I see ELPHABA telling her story through music and songs, instead of women with green make-up singing really hight notes on the stage. When I see Idina I see ELPHABA transformation from the green girl to the wicked witch of the west. I think a lot of Elphabas have failed to portrait that, because they were too busy trying to sing the perfect note and totally forgot about the acting part in musical theatre. That's what make Idina's performance so special and memoreble and, in my opinion, the best. No one can beat her when it comes to acting skills and stage presence. One of the most deserving Tony ever.

Acting wise, Idina Menzel's performance as Elphaba is unmatched. Her mannerisms, her expressions, the way she delivers the song, all the emotion she conveys is all so phenomenal and spectacular. I am and always will be in complete awe of her.

Those that talk about technique, have to remember... Indina's on stage execution, work shopped score development, and album delivery... created the technique that performers push to execute! Her delivery, made her the only one to receive a Tony the first go round, for a reason!

What I enjoyed about Idina's performance is that it was "balls to the walls." It was intense and the vocals were not always sung. A lot of the other Elphaba's sounded pretty and more technically perfect but they lacked the drive, intensity, and excitement!

You should listen to the version by Willemijn Verkaik as well!
@justinsperanza36732 жыл бұрын
@@lizh2539 Willemijn Verkaik is incredible and technically a MUCH better singer than Idina. What I like about Idina's voice is that it is unpolished and flawed. When she sings the end of Defying Gravity there is so much weight in her voice, bordering on screaming. That is what makes her Idina Menzel.
@lizh25392 жыл бұрын
@@justinsperanza3673 Yes I agree! I visited a lot of musicals when I was in London last week and my main criticism of Wicked was that the songs weren't being performed with all that much emotion, more like look how I amazing I can sing. Other smaller productions I went to like & Juliet and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe were less afraid to sing flawed at moments it would fit in the story. Because if you're for example heartbroken you don't sing perfectly. I think that's what makes Idina great

I still get chills every single time I hear this song. She poured both her singing & acting talents into her performances, as well as her heart, & she wasn't afraid to "get ugly" (I use that term metaphorically because that woman was absolutely stunning every step of the way).
@real90sjesus12 күн бұрын

@katiehelms89032 жыл бұрын
People can get all technical about the singing, but she’s still amazing and what really makes her the best Elphaba to me is the way she acts, and the way she really shows the development of the character over the course of the show. In this performance specifically I want to point out that she sounded very screamy with “FIYERO!!!” but I think that’s right… she’s literally crying out to her lover in agony over the thought that he is being tortured and she can’t save him. That’s a scream and it needs to sound it. She put all the right emotion into it. Idina goes more for character over vocal technique, and while I’m glad she has improved in that area some over the years (since it will help her not harm her voice), I really appreciate not being afraid to throw all of the emotion of the character into a note, and not holding back in fear that it won’t be your best singing quality.

You can't out due the original! There's a reason why she was the only one who got a Tony the first go round! Technique, can't replace raw feeling & emotion! Kind of like a baker that does everything by hand, compared to someone who does everything by machine! The spirit they have when they sell it to you, or when you're curious about what they've made, is truly unmatched!!!!!!

I've been listening to the recorded songs on KZbin and even in the there you can hear the heartbreak. I don't care if idina isn't the "best vocally" I've always been of the opinion that showing so much emotion in a song will always go over better than just hitting the write key or note. I feel her pain, her anguish, her realization and acceptance that's really only accomplished through fantastic acting. And she sounds pretty damn good anyway

Yea but this song alone is one of the hardest to sing in all of Broadway musical songs, due to the range you have to be capable of in order to even sing this song in the first place. Idina is a rare gem in a box full of rocks, and she's one of the only musical actresses in History like theres very few actresses that could pull this song off, but because of her sheer talent alone she's able to and she still rocks it better than 95% of actresses, not hundreds of Broadway actresses have that or are even remotely close to how well she handles herself when under pressure. She's a legend in her own right like I don't see all these actresses getting signed by Disney and stuff. Hundreds of Broadway actresses will never replace Idina @@cc-vn7qp

did Elphaba fail to save Fiyero's life alongside Nessarose , Dr. Dillamond and Boq then why she declared herself Wicked . eventhough she is trying to save their lives
@jamirgordon97452 жыл бұрын
Boq hated her because he just believed anything the wizard said, he also probably didn’t realize he died and thought Elphaba just randomly turned him into a tin man, the lion I don’t understand why the lion hated Elphaba, Elphaba defended the lion and I guess because he’s a cowardly lion he blamed it on Elphaba, Boq also probably just said she was evil because Nessa was pretty ruthless and he just compared alongside the stuff the wizard was saying. They also probably just concluded Fiyero was evil and even then nobody knew Fiyero was alive except Elphaba, everyone probably didn’t recognize him as the scarecrow cause he looks different. Also Oz just needed someone to be evil so I guess it would make the wizard look better.
