Idina 15 years ago? Absolutely, one of the best in the industry. Now? Her voice is just so damaged from Wicked I doubt she could ever sustain a lead role like that on Broadway again. It's kind of a double ended sword because Idina wouldn't have the same recognition if she hadn't originated Elphaba, but also being the guinea pig for the role she didn't know just how much damage 8 shows a week was doing to her and how to do it without hurting herself.

Everytime she messes up there is an absurd amount of people making excuses for her. She wasn't sick here. The song wasn't sped up much at all. Which would actually make hitting these high notes easier. She just doesn't have a very reliable voice. She has admitted this herself. I saw her 3 different times in Wicked and only once was Defying Gravity any good. And even that was a bit flat on the high F. She can sing, but she sings in a very unhealthy way that doesn't allow her to be consistent. Her high notes are more controlled screaming than belting. That doesn't allow any singer to reliably hit a note all the time. You can tell she was nervous here, and that may have been the problem, but her voice is not consistent. There are many bootlegs of wicked with her in it. Look her up singing Defying Gravity live in the show and you will hear how flat she is throughout the whole ending of that song almost every time. This wasn't a fluke. She wasn't sick. She just isn't a healthy singer. Period.

The Oscars' performances are allegedly performed on a soundstage, in a completely different location from where the orchestra is. Menzel is an accomplished *live* performance singer -- she's used to providing and receiving feedback from the conductor and adjusting her performance to suit the orchestral arrangement. Add to that the fact that this is a shortened version of Let It Go and that she overcomes performance anxiety *every* time she sings live and it's not hard to see how this was a recipe for disaster. I have nothing but sympathy for her, here.

@silverbowftw52254 жыл бұрын
I'm getting fucking sick and tired of y'all who are trying to be the unpopular opinion professional ones. First of all, a COLD has symptoms that you cannot avoid as it's a natural response from your body to fight off a disease, which includes focusing blood circulation in other areas other than your throat (yes, I know what I'm talking about as I'm studying about the immune system). It's not something you can "prepare for" as inevitably you won't sound as decent and healthy as you would if you weren't ill. Let's also throw in the fact that she had an asthma attack right before the performance, which if you didn't know is linked to the lungs (aka the whole fucking reason you can sing besides the vocal chords). Therefore, your opinion is no longer acceptable but rather ignorant and demanding to the point where you have this idolized example of "professional singers" that others should follow even though them themselves make mistakes too. You're straight out being mean instead of bringing the necessary constructive criticism. Think about how better the world would be if we all were at least a little bit sensitive.
