I was never part of the Epic craze and whilst I appreciate the appeal, I've never taken more than a passing glance at small scale miniatures. In this video I try to work out how to paint them and if it's a project I will come back to or not. Thanks to Games Workshop for sending the box out early for the video.

I remember it too, but wasn't it called something else? I don't think it was called 'Epic!' Was it? I think the scale was even smaller back in the day too wasn't it? Edit... I remember now, what I am remembering is Adeptus Titanicus. Just googled it, and the space marine armies of the 80's era were of a smaller scale too. 6mm as opposed to the recent 8mm release.

@@gutz323 From what I remember the original box was called Epic Space Marine... with a small Epic in the title aquilla. That box had no Titans, then Adeptus Titanicus was the second box... now with Titans! Cool fun, either way. These new models are lovely. I think 'Epic' was the range at that scale? I have the original box in storage, but yeah confusing, lol.

There was epic space marine, then epic titan legions (the best version), then epic 40k, then epic Armageddon (also the best version...). I can't wait to get my hands on this. I'll never actually play it, but I never got painting much of the old stuff because it belonged to my mate back in the day. Always wanted a mega gargant and an Imperator Titan. I really cut my teeth on Battlefront’s 15mm pewter minis. what I learned was a brown wash over the base coat makes a choppy looking paint job look pretty convincing and adds the grimey battlefield ‘I haven’t changed my uniformed or showered in 2 weeks’ look..highlighting isn’t really that necessary. the details are just a bonus if you can get them..stuff like patches and insignias, etc.

I've a fair amount of 6mm stuff and yeah, at that scale infantry boils down to "paint it green, add black to the boots and gun, add flesh to the face and hands, done." Even if I decide to go for a more modern camo look, which is basically "add dots and splotches randomly to the figure," there's still less splotches on a sprue of 10 6mm figures than there are on one 28mm figure. Question: what does one call that arch-shaped light? I'm in Canada so most likely your specific source isn't going to be cost efficient, but having a generic name will help with the hunt.

The light I have is from Green Stuff World, but you can just make the same thing yourself using some arched plastic and an LED strip, that's all it is really.

I paint a lot of 1/72 scale miniatures. The way I work is either sticking them on cocktail sticks one by one, stick those in a piece of foam and prime. Then painting them individualy while holding them by the cocktail stick. Another way is to stick them with blue tag on tongue depressors. I like your army!

They look great dude! As a more relaxed armie painter project rather than a super detail-orientated project I reckon this game has the potential to be a delightful painting experience...would be interesting to see just how much detail you get on them but as you say the units as a whole are the focus and as a group you can have them looking excellent without going crazy on the detail. Also seeing the brush holder in use on your table gave me a big smile! 😁

If I am not mistaken, the scale of these new "epic" miniatures is bigger then the original miniatures back in the eighties... I was devastated when Games Workshop stopped that epic-line with the Tyrannids-figures... Back in those days the whole game was also "cm-based" as "inch-based" and is still very fun to play... Games workshop did release a new version of epic later, but it didn't quite "got of the ground"... I hope that this time, GW will stick with epic-scale longer and will bring out other races of the WH 40K-range, like the Tau and the Undead BESIDES the Eldar, The dwarfs, the Orcs, Chaos and the Tyrannids... I love painting the vehicle miniatures AND of course, the Titans!

Ace that, mate! Looks great. And you are absolutely right - from painting 6mm Napoleonics, it's almost pointless treating this scale of model like we do 28/32's. It almost necessitates it's own apporach and the visual impact is less fromthe details of individual models, and more from the look of the thing as a whole on the table. You could chase yourself into madness trying to pick out every last detail on them (and more power to you if you do) but I don't think it's the way to go to get them on the table.

As a 'veteran' of Epic 40K painting on the sprue is the way to go and to be honest a lot of my collection is still on the sprue. I found that the way to go was similar to painting larger scale armies, simple tabletop standard for the rank and file and a bit more time and detail on the HQ's and special figures. I think 2 hours was about the time I spent on some of the special figures but with my eyesight and hand problems I couldn't even start to paint anything like this now - even though they are roughly twice the size of the Epic scale. Couple of things to note about this set in comparison to the old Epic Space Marine and army boxes - the old square bases had recesses for the bases of the individual figures which made the models look less stuck on, each base had a little upright post to use as a movement handle but also acted as a marker for the back of the unit, square bases made it easier to rank up your troops and finally with Epic being set in the 40k universe you had a far better selection of models - I personally had Space Marines, Imperial Troops (mounted troops), Eldar, Chaos (great Tzeentch discs) and Orks if memory serves. Be good to see you paint up 1 stand to your highest standard - keep it up.

One of my first big (haha…) army painting project back in the 90s was doing the marines from the old Space Marine epic box. I did a poor job of them, but just putting the basic colours in the right place is plenty to get a good looking army when you’ve got 30 bases of 5 guys each on them

For the vast majority of us this kit is awful that it's 30k. I have a 30k marine army, but by not doing 40k for this epic set, GW have isolated Eldar, Ork and Tyranid players for a start.

I played the first edition of EPIC. Hated it. So I used the micro minis in games of Rogue Trader 40k. Back then, the models had round bases you slotted into what was really a movement tray. So you could, with delicate fingers or a pair of tweasers, move them as individual figures. Yeah, that was great. I could have a whole game set up on a TV tray ready to go as I didn't have much room to play 'larger' point games. However, getting someone to play at that small scale just raised a lot of eyebrows. So I traded off the models.

I absolutely love the idea of epic. Just before the announcement, I was actually just starting a 3rd party army of epic tanks and a few Titanicus Knights. I really enjoyed painting them and was looking forward to the release of this game. But for me, the price is just too much. I would either expect to get twice as much for the cost or to pay half as much. Seriously, if the main starter box was £60, i'd probably not only have bought it but i'd probably buy two and have a HUGE army, which is what I like about the idea most. The idea of having a huge army. But £120 is FAR too steep. Also i'm not too keen on the Solar Auxilia being bundled with Marines. I think I would have wanted a huge Space Marine army backed by Knights and maybe a fleet of Guard tanks. But in my mind if you want to mix Guard with Marines, you need at least a 10 Guard to 1 Marine mix so I'd only bother with Marines and tanks.
