7:20 One time I was pulling into a scenic overlook on a mountain road and my engine cut out. I kept pressing the brake hard but nothing happened. I tried to steer away from the curb and it wouldn't turn. Then it hit the curb and started rolling backwards. I stopped by shifting into park. It's surprising how much effort is required to control the basic functions of a car without power assistance.
@RDSAlphard2 жыл бұрын
I've had engine stalled on me before, at first the brake still has vacuum assist, but because I was trying to roll into safety zone, I actually had to stand in the pedal to stop. And of course, also step on parking brake + just throw shifter into park.
@AO_1012 жыл бұрын
1. Car's brake need a vacuum to work (which usually took one from the exhaust). When your engine's not running and you're pressing as hard as possible yes the pedal will feel harder but for the car it's like 10% braking power 2. If your care have a hydraulic power steering, when the engine's not running they can't work properly because the pump to direct the hydraulic fluid is powered by engine rotation (it will feel heavier and you're barely able to turn, but still doable). Electronic power steering wise, not sure wether "you need the engine" or "as long as there is power to the pump" but let's just say it fails that's it, let's just say good luck turning your car

I definitely wouldn't say "most." It's a non-zero number, and might even be more than a third, but certainly not a majority.

Fun Fact. Height on Bridges/Over/Underpasses Could be wrong. The City/Town/State could have repaved the roads and the signs that were correct at say, 11.5 feet could now only be 11 feet. So Trucks that were once able to pass under them when they were at 11.5, Now don't know they can't. But since the City/Town/State have not changed the sign to reflect the new height restrictions, trucks getting stuck under them are Not at Fault. I have known Towns/Cites that have done this.

6 inches is a lot to add with repaving. Also not a good idea to only allow yourself 6 inches of clearance.

@@thedarkemissary Example only.. But have seen it done. Paved right over the old road without removing it. Raised it a good 4-5 Inches.

6:57 - notice how everyone pushes and they are blocking the tail lights - any car approaching from behind sees nothing but black and the pushers have their backs to oncoming traffic so they won't know anything until they are hit - I've seen way too many fatalities and lost legs from this same scenario, be sure to leave those lights uncovered if you're trying to help someone!

It's NOT on the street, it's on the terrain of a service station. They where pushing the out of gas car to the pump. The fail is the driver who could not find the brake pedal.

@@Kualinar I thought they started on the street, that's why the emergency flashers were on. @@Kualinar that engine was dead dude, power assistance was off which means, no brakes, no clutch, no acceleration, no RPM, no power steering, no oil coolant. Nothing expect from basic steering and the park gear. In the heat of the moment, you don't think to put it into park, instincts kick in and most people try the brake pedal to be surprised it doest work.

@@gkb0572 Even without power brakes, you should have at least some braking power, especially at such low speed. Do you mean that modern brakes are brake-by-wire ? That there is no mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the master cylinder ?
@knagl2 жыл бұрын
@@Kualinar The brakes do still work, they just won't have the power assist they have when the engine is running. Also the brake lights would work even with the engine off. The person in the car never hit the brakes -- the lights never came on.
