VR headsets have a feature that displays a grid-like wall when you get close to the edges of the play area, so that even if you somehow forget it's not real life you can avoid headbutting walls and punching vases. The people who end up walking into a wall or punching it would have had to deliberately turn off the boundary feature, meaning they're either overconfident or they borrowed the headset from a friend who screwed them by not turning it back on temporarily.

My old job brought in a VR forklift that you trained on while standing on a disassembled forklift body and I was one of the test dummies for it. Made me sick/dizzy because the motions I'm used to didn't occur when I slowed down or turned so my brain just knew something wasn't right. Worked amazingly for anyone who didn't have forklift experience though.
