I knew a guy who was studying coding in college and ended up coal mining. He was proud of his coal mining job while he did it bc he did what he had to do to provide for his daughter. He had a wife and she got pregnant and he went to work. I don’t think that’s a concept Anisia or Ian can ever understand.

Coming from Appalachia where coal was basically already in your lungs before you were born due to how common it was here to have a family of generational coal miners - your dad, his dad, his dad’s dad, your uncles, your male cousins, your aunts’ new husbands, most males you went to high school with, your friends growing up had their dad working alongside yours down in a mine, etc … - so, yea their views are pretty tone-deaf on the matter, which is just the usual for types like them who look down on and spit upon those who won’t “progress forward” and “get with the times”. You ask a guy here back in the 2000s what he was going to do after high school and it was “well, I’m going to be a coal miner. I’d make more doing it than going off to college and racking up debt. I’ll have a home and a brand new vehicle before 25.” … and sure enough, all the boys I went to school with that went into mining did just that while still having enough money to save back to live off of in case of an emergency. Most of them moved over to pipelining once they shut down mines here, but mining coal was one of those jobs that they always needed people for … it was back-breaking and labor intensive, but have yet to meet someone that worked in the mines that said “I hated it, I hated the people there, I hated everything about it” - yes, they’ll complain, but by large it’s always positives with the camaraderie/brotherhood they had and how they were like a second family for them, everyone looking out for each other and knowing you have to be sharp, because one screw up and you’re putting everyone in danger … made everyone be more accountable with their actions, and the families of coal miners were proud of them. It made them great money to boot lol. Unfortunately the higher ups tainted it with their greed and dismissive behaviors with safety and helped shape such a negative view towards mining as a whole along with the mountain top removal campaign in the 2000s and the immediate rush to protest coal every step of the way. Ruined states like my own where we are wealthy as can be with the resource, yet due to the past 2 decades, we’ve had our economy tank with shutdowns - rural small towns that were being built up with money going back into the community from workers building new homes and families being able to open up businesses, attracting more to come to the area to help further fuel the local economy … all of that now just gone. People like Ian and Anisa will never understand jobs like that and what they meant for areas like my own. It’s a job that will humble people real quick once they actually work it - the thing is, people here chose to work it, though. No one forced them, they all could have gone off to do something else, but they worked in the mines and were proud to do it. They’ll never understand seeing your mother light up with pride when your father came home, kicking off his steel-toed boots covered in coal dust from head to toe, kissing you and your siblings as he tells you how happy he is to make it back home another night to see you all before hurrying to wash his darkened hands real quick that would turn the sink black just so he could hurry and eat dinner with the family. They’ll never understand hearing their dad get up at 3am to get ready for work, sneaking into your room to tell you and your siblings that they loved you and how they hoped to see you all later in the evening, not understanding the danger he’s going into for the sake of providing for his family to have a roof over our heads, food on the table, and making sure us kids were taken care of above all else. To them, that’s just backwoods hillbilly shite they’re too good to even bother thinking about because they can’t fathom why someone would work such a job considering everything else that’s out there nor understand why many others were proud of what they did.
