Do not do this if you are under warranty. If you are outside of warranty, do not do this unless you plan to throw the sensor away anyway. You are at high risk of either ruining the signal long enough to set a fault, or breaking the sensor outright. If the tip looks a little sooty, just wipe it off with a dry or slightly damp rag. Do not allow any fluids inside or spray it with anything unless you don't really care anymore, as it contains delicate chemically sensitive electrodes. This is not a spark plug -- as indicated by its cost. If you insist on running this little experiment, then using pure fluids that evaporate without residue. Acetone, 90+% rubbing alcohol, and Carb Spray. I suggest you avoid using anything like fuel injector cleaner or WD40, as they evaporate slowly and contain additives that could permanently poison the sensor. FYI, I work on NOx sensor design.

@@chrismc8548 I was going to write a lengthy list of ways you could end up killing the sensor using gasoline, injector cleaner, water, etc., but if someone absolutely insists on soaking it in something, here are my two cents: Use a high purity solvent that evaporates rapidly, blow it out, then let it sit around for a day to ensure nothing remains inside. Something like 100% Acetone. I don't know what good it'll do you, but at least you're less likely to kill the sensor.
@chrismc85482 жыл бұрын

One of the few videos getting to the real problem. I don't care about the outside protector cap of the sensor. I need the zirconium stone inside clean, and you are getting to that both by soaking and spraying into the venting holes. I think you made headway with capturing your trash in the bag. Now I will try this with testing before and after. With the trash I think you are on to it, good video, thanks.
@omegaqed85923 жыл бұрын
Do not do this. NOx sensors are not spark plugs. They have very delicate chemical sensing electrodes inside a fragile ceramic element. Soaking the sensor in any "cleaner" will cause the sensor to read very badly for the first few hours (if not kill it). You will be at high risk of setting a fault. If there is some soot on the outside of the probe, you can wipe it off with a dry rag. Under no circumstance should you allow a fluid inside the probe tip.
@DrDrobotnik2 жыл бұрын
@@omegaqed8592 so you're saying WD 40?
@omegaqed85922 жыл бұрын
@@DrDrobotnik I cannot provide any "official" recommendations. However, IF: 1) it were my truck and it was outside of warranty 2) the sensor had relatively low hours and might have set a fault because of soot... Then I might consider trying to clean it just on the off-chance that it helps. In that case I would wipe it and use pure Acetone or 90+% rubbing Alcohol to soak, shake it out, and let it dry for about half an hour in front of a fan to help draw the vapors out. Do not use any fluid with additives, as those additives could permanently poison the sensor. This is why I suggested the pure volatile solvents. Be careful removing the sensor probe from the pipe, as they are often stuck and easy to damage upon removal. Be careful you don't get yourself in an engine de-rate situation if it doesn't work. Most of the time, this kind of cleaning repair on NOx sensors will not actually address the original problem even though the fault code may not come back--but you'll at least feel like you accomplished something. :)

It's not a Knock Sensor. It's not at Oxygen sensor either. He's saying NOx as in oxides of nitrogen. NOx sensors like the one he's cleaning can cost $800 each. NOx is NO1 and NO2. It's an acid rain particle with one nitrogen and either 1 or 2 oxygen atoms stuck to it. The "x' is a variable. NOx is formed at temperatures over 2400°F. A NOx sensor is part of a selective catalyst reduction system. In simple terms- diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system that uses urea to neutralize N0x into ammonia. The system will have one in the front by the turbo and one at the end of the exhaust selective catalyst reduction unit.

@@Funky4me21 That sucks. P1C54 means "Catalyst Missing". Essentially your outlet NOx sensor is seeing a lot of NOx (or DEF), so it thinks your have removed the catalyst. This indicates a severe issue with your DEF dosing or conversion across the catalyst. With such a young vehicle, the most likely culprit is your DEF doser. If they've replaced the sensors, and that did not fix it, then it's unlikely the sensors are the problem. Maybe ask them if they checked the DEF doser, and also check for urea deposits near the DEF injector. If you're in a cold climate, it's also possible your Urea is freezing up.

O2 sensor is for gas cars and nox sensors are for most diesel engines including simi trucks. They both works the same way. You can clean them and they will still work if there is a soot build up. The soot blocks up the small port holes,that's when the code mostly will appear. Get sm acetone or carb spray or rubbing alcohol and wipe it off good and let it dry. Then install it back. Take your negative battery cable off to reset the code. Make sure you always check your wiring harness as well before installing the sensor back because that's a lot of heat that travels through your exhaust and sometimes it will melt your harness and cause a sensor code. Hope this helps..

I think he is saying NOx sensor or nitrogen oxide sensor for diesels.
@sekainiheiwa36504 жыл бұрын
You will save a couple of weeks a max month, at the end you need to replace. So two times you will need to dive under your car, and if you break NOx mounting on your cat. then it will be very paunful for your pocket. It wears out not gets dirty. Tired NOx makes your car hungry for fuel. So playing with this chemicals you not only breathing toxins but also loosing money and poluting:D

It is worth to try anything because these sensors are made of gold judging by their price. I am looking for a bypass to this system because i can't afford to change these sensors all the time. If it is this expensive to save a little polution it is not worth it.

@@Davoodoox1 I'm sure it's too late, but have you ever checked out Rock auto parts? They had about 15 different priced sensors for my car, from $34 to over $150.
@Davoodoox12 жыл бұрын
@@bigredc222 I made a motor optimization (tuning with computer) and AdBlue OFF a couple of days ago and the car runs like new and i will never have to bother with AdBlue correlated problems again. I am super happy and amazed how well a car can actually function when no crap system is in the way.
@bigredc2222 жыл бұрын
@@Davoodoox1 Are you saying you have a diesel and figured out a way to get it to run without AdBlue? What about when it comes time to get your yearly emission test?
@Davoodoox12 жыл бұрын
@@bigredc222 No problem with emission testing. Then all the other diesels without AdBlue would fail too??? If you remove the DPF then you have problem with emission testing. Yes a simple programmin called AdBlue OFF was done and car runs like new.

If you have some soot on your NOx sensor, yes, you can blow it with an air gun. Just be sure it's not turned on/hot.
