Beautifully explained. I have a BA & MA in special education and this has been the first time I hear someone explains the difference in a short and clear synopsis (under 3 min). Thanks

Thank you sooo much for this! I've worked in education for over 5 years and am JUST now having a clear understanding of the differences between the two. I tutor a student with ADHD and I'd like to mention the benefits of getting a 504 plan to the parents without offending them.

Hi there, sorry about the late response - I just stumbled across this video. I am currently transitioning into becoming a Special Ed teacher in CA and have never heard of a case like yours before where one student has both plans. Would you mind explaining how both the 504 and the IEP differ(ed) for you as a student? If I understand the lady in the video correctly, the main difference between the two is that there is no push in / pull out associated with a 504 plan. I wonder how that would work in practice given that there will be push in / pull out either way if you have an IEP? Thank you!

I have ADHD, ODD, Anxiety, Segmental NF1 and Learning Difficulties. I have always had an IEP for my behavior and learning help. I always wondered what the difference was between them. Thank you a lot!

Have you read Section 504 of the rehabilitation act? It calls for related services and specialized instruction. And comprehensive evaluation of the child’s individual need is the key to developing appropriate services under either 504 or IDEA. Then we all know what the child needs.

Have you heard of Dysgraphia? My 6th grader may have it and I'm doing research on it at the moment. I'm about to set up an appointment with his pediatrician to see how she can help or send him to a specialist. A friend who has a daughter with special needs and has an IEP plan in place for her at school, sent me the link to a website called Understood.org. You should go and check it out. I have learned so much from that website in the last week than I have in the last 3 years, since my son was diagnosed. The beauty about the site is that it also give you tools (for both parents and child) on how to manage their disability and how to overcome many of the obstacles kids with learning disabilities face from day to day. Good luck on your journey and always ask for help. No one will know what you need, until you ask for help :) Wishing you the best!

Dyslexia doesn't fall under an IEP in all districts. Some districts categorize dyslexia under 504 services. Parents should engage in the intervention process at their child's school to see how their particular district offers services - whether under section 504 or IEP.

Honestly while i was in middle school to junior high i was always on a 504 plan and it really didn't help me that much, but it wasn't until I had to repeat 7th grade that's when i finally got on the iep and it helped to many of my benefits.

If you don't mind my asking. What exactly changed that made it change from a 504 to an iep?

That is why it is of best interest to have a child with a disability to get into a 504 Plan, where only the accommodations are saught in a regular classroom, as often as necessary without neglecting learning as a whole. An IEP that has the student in a resource room defeats this purpose, as resource room students show little to no progress in their learning, as those types of students show no interest in their studies

expose me ask for an independent educational evaluation at school district expense. Put it in a letter to them. This will help you know what he needs. You will probably need a lawyer to fix it. attorneys can be reimbursed by the school if the school has done wrong and they settle in your favor.

Not quite, a 504 can apply to children who have disabilities that aren't specified in the law that covers IEPs, but who still need some kind of plan and/or accommodations to make school accessible for them.

How the Law Should Be: 1. The School Should Need to have at Least 2 faculty members who independently come to the conclusion that a student has ADHD, learning disability, mental illness, etc 2. The school Should first consult w/ the student for his/her opinion and then need the Permission of the Parents/Guardian to administer an IQ test or psychological evaluation. 3. The school Should have to Consult with the Student's Doctor before making any kind of diagnosis or prescribing treatment such as forcing the student into therapy or drugs under threat of expulsion. 4. The Parents should have the Right to a 2nd Opinion from a 3rd party doctor if they disagree w/ the school psychologist's findings.

Public schools cannot force students into medical intervention. ADHD is considered a medical diagnosis and licensed specialist of school psychology (LSSP) at the master's degree level are not qualified to diagnose ADHD. If this is happening where you live, it's illegal and the parents might have a good lawsuit.
