@@hiddengem4293 A decade or so ago, I spoke with a layman who had conducted a series of “evagelistic” meetings in a town in Michigan. He had been assisted by other lay members of his congregation. He told me the meetings had been conducted “without success”. The reason for his evaluation was his too-narrow definition of “success” in evangelism. In the hope of encouraging you to adopt a different way of measuring success - thus making it easier for you to think of your work as successful - please allow me to make some suggestions about ways to measure success, even if those ways are not necessarily considered traditional measures of success in evangelism. Some Christians - both clergy and laity - consider a profession of faith in Jesus to be a measure of success. I don’t disagree but that does depend on how the person understands the word “faith”. Faith is the evidence of things not seen. (Heb. 11:1) Professing to have faith in Jesus because a Christian has told someone he is going to hell if he doesn’t profess faith in Jesus isn’t really evidence of biblical faith. In several Bible study / Sunday school settings, when people have talked about being saved, I have asked each person in the group to answer the question “Saved from what?” With very few exceptions, every one of those people gave the same answer - word for word: “Hell fire”. Notice that when the angel told Joseph in a dream that Mary’s firstborn was to be called Jesus, the reason was that he would save his people from their sins. No mention of hell fire. As Paul Harvy once said “We want to be washed but we don’t want to get wet”. I think he meant that humans tend to want to be free of guilt without a corresponding freedom from selfish things we do. So yes, encourage people to understand that God’s forgiveness is a free gift - Jesus has already paid the debt - AND consider it a measure of success if a person also stops speaking in terms of trying to be good or do good and starts, instead, speaking in terms of trusting the Lord for transformation - salvation from selfishness and the actions that are prompted by selfishness. Then there is the question of whether people are being encouraged to trust the Lord and his written word - or whether they are being encouraged to place their trust in traditional interpretations of the written word. The former results in PERSONAL study. That can be considered a measure of success. The latter results in people being able to speak Christianese, recite a creed or tell you what you want to hear. Another measure of success is adoption of the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers - the doctrine that we can obtain God’s grace directly - not merely through the intercession of priests on Earth or saints in heaven AND that laity have the same access to spiritual authority as clergy do, i.e. directly from the Lord himself rather than only through ordination by agents of a religious organization.
