If 8 speed is enough ... then is 13 really better?

It's taken over 100 yrs for the Bicycle to get from having only 1 gear to now having 13 and every time more cogs are added there will be someone that will tell you that you don't need it!
Well maybe you don't or maybe you do it depends on if you want to be at the front of the race or if you just want to ride for the love of riding.

That Taylor video was great. Loved how they made bespoke parts due to lack of availability. Shimano peaked at 9 speed imo, beyond that it was an arms race. Lots of good legacy parts out there though for making interesting builds.

I'm a team mechanic & the bikes I look after are 12speed & electronic (it's what we're sponsored with) & is definitely helpful for today's Pro riders. I though, use 10speed at the rear on my own bikes & cable shift, it's plenty with two rings upfront & in all honesty most average cyclists don't need this as it should be the adventure that counts, not what components are used. Sticking to my 9 spd - 11-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-28 and a triple 44/32/20 on my road bike. Like you say, for an average joe. Nice topic, Daryl.
