The best fragrance-related compliment I've got was: "and you always smell good". This was actually more of a side note than what I was initially complimented on. Happened to me twice with different people. Considering I use different fragrances depending on just how I feel, it felt good because the compliment was more about having a good taste than it was about a particular choice of fragrance. These compliments also were from people who I'm quite close with; by no means strangers.

It's very very very rare to get a compliment from a fragrance from a stranger. I've only gotten a couple, and I wear what I think are very pleasing fragances. What I do notice is people's facial expressions when we pass or are in the same area waiting on our Starbucks order. Peoeple will smile or give the eyebrow raise. They change their demeanor, which is a big compliment, and the most one can hope for. I do get that all the time. The last compliment I received was months ago at a Jamba Juice from an employee who was elated over what she was smelling. I have a suspicion that she's a frag head from the terminology and familiaraity she had regarding "fall scents".

I've recently gotten sucked into this whole fragrance thing, after it morphed from a less expensive aftershave buying addiction. You seem like a super genuine guy who legitimately cares about others. Funny story, before I got into the fragrance scene and started wearing them, I would ALWAYS get compliments on my cologne and was asked which one I was wearing. I had to tell them I wasn't wearing cologne and it was my deodorant they smelled 🤣🤣 and since I switched from my deodorant to eau de toilette and eau de parfum fragrances hundreds of dollars later, I have not gotten any compliments from anyone without asking them first.

The build-up of hype (fantasies, as you called them) is indeed a plague. Expectations breeds sometimes happiness but most often disappointment. There *is* something to get from the social media fragcomm but the hype machine makes it so people often lose track of the enjoyment and personal satisfaction they get from the hobby. Story time: I went shopping 2 weeks ago looking for something for the coming warm weather and saw a lone bottle of Prada L'Homme L'Eau which I never hear about anywhere and when I put it on the strip I fell completely in love with it. I actually wear it to sleep because I find it fresh and soothing and I don't do that with many fragrances. Yes, I got compliments from it but the truth is, the real reward is the enjoyment I've been getting from it over the last week or two with no external influence.

For me, scent is the only reason I purchase a fragrance these days. Performance is nice if I can get it but it will never be more important than the smell. I sample all of my potential purchases(on skin) if it is expensive. If the longevity is not extensive, I can reapply or moisturize previous to the initial application. Enjoy your fragrances gentlemen.😊

Yes, but it is frustrating to spend 150+ on amazing smelling fragrances and only have it last 2-4 on skin. You can't just carry around decant everywhere and keep spraying. It's a waste of time and money. The sacrifice is too great. Projection and silage can always be sacrificed for better smelling fragrence but never performance.

I work from home and wear fragrance everyday, even if I know I’m not going to cross paths with another person that day. I wear fragrance for me and me only, with the exception being if I’m going on a date. I love compliments, who doesn’t, but I don’t expect or even hope for them. On the flip side I do have guilty pleasure frags that I only wear at home and wouldn’t wear out in public, delina for example. That could make a fun video “guilty pleasures I only wear at home”

Honestly, if I want to get noticed, I'll wear a light up sign that says, "LOOK AT ME!" 😂 the last time I got an organic complement from a stranger was a customer at my old job... she was an incredibly outgoing Australian woman. Otherwise it was a handful of coworkers. Gotta wear fragrances for you, but also, don't wear in public what you know smells bad to other people unless you wanna get strange looks 🤣

I definitely have to agree, it doesn't make since to me to only wear something because others like it, of course we dont want to absolutely offend or choke people so too speak, but having that be a main factor takes the fun out of it in my eyes. when I wear a perfume I love to constantly sniff myself because I only wear scents that in love personally, each fragrance should be an experience that enriches you day and mood. my favorite experience is not when I catch the attention of a stranger, but when I meet another "frag head". it's surprisingly rare to find others who actually wear fragrances out in thier daily lives, it's fun to see how it connects us.

I think authenticity is a relevant word here - if you’re wearing fragrance for yourself first, you’re reaffirming your most authentic self. A compliment is not only for the fragrance then, it’s also a compliment of your unique taste and personal expression. It is a meaningful compliment as opposed to a hollow one. PS - are peg legs and puffy shirts in? Eye patches - panty droppers or no?

I can't agree more on this Justin. This is the madness which is dominating the community nowadays. When I started my journey 30 years ago, I just wanted to smell nice. After a while I wanted smell nice to others also and spend a fortune on perfumes over the years following. A few years ago I began to see the madness in all of it and only kept the perfumes I personaly truly like. And this small collection gives me way more satisfaction, than having a huge collection. Some I kept last indeed a day or longer, some only a few hours. But I don't care. Either I respray or spray another perfume on me. When I don't have that chance, yep I do spray on a longer lasting perfume in the morning. Most of my perfumes are also "skin scents". I don't need to be that guy people smell miles ahead before they see me. I really hope a lot of people watch this video, because again and again you send a powerfull message into this community. If people listen to it wisely, their hobby can become so much more intense and fullfilling.
@AGentlemansJourney77
@AGentlemansJourney77 Жыл бұрын
Simple answer is no. If you're looking for beastmode fragrances and compliments you're setting yourself for disappointment. Yes long lasting fragrances are nice but sometimes it gets dull after 6 hours. And wearing fragrances just for the sake of compliments is silly and you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Its nice to get a compliment but its not the top thing to wear something. Just wear something you enjoy at the end and if you get a compliment then awesome but if it don't then don't let it ruin your day. I might do a short video on this subject. Enjoyed watching this and excellent message, Justin.

great content again 👍 I'm coming to this conclusion that our noses are broken (not Justin's nose for sure 😂) I don't know why, maybe because of covid or our life style or something else... we don't have the nose we used to have. The reason I'm saying this is that recently I was trying some certain fragrances and sometimes I couldn't smell them at all after 20 minutes and sometimes I could smell them ALL DAY! The fragrances are the same but my nose is not. And of course I know it happened to all of you that you couldn't smell your perfume but you still get compliment during the day. But at this point I truly don't care about getting noticed. I have fragrances in my collection that I know if I wear them compliments are guaranteed but I dont even remember the last time I wore them because at this point I'm only care if I myself enjoy the scent.

I bought a sample of comme de garcone man2 it smells amazing but it was as spoken in this video a skin scent I must admit I was disappointed because I knew it would never be noticed by others. Still I wear it for myself and for my enjoyment but sometimes I do wish it were more noticeable to others. Long story short I’ve learned over time which frags get the compliments and I wear them in situations when I want my frag to interact more with with my clothes and as well as with others. That being said I don’t wear Aoud lemon mint to a funeral and I don’t wear Chanel boy to a New Year’s Eve party. Imagine picking up the baby at a christening wearing oud for greatness 😉

I won't wear something I don't like, but if I am going to a social gathering, I will tailor my choice to something I like but that I also think will be generally liked or appreciated and I think the reason for that is hospitality. I think part of being hospitable, if that is your goal, is to smell pleasant. I say that because I genuinely appreciate when other people do. The golden rule of smell.

I think its also great to emphasize on the fact that some scents can be smelled by others (yes even the intimate fragrances) but we just tend to get nose blind so easily we write it off as skin scent. I remember I got noticed once by wearing dolce and gabana the one edp, which is regarded as a weak scent. Multiple factors that play here for "getting noticed" but honestly as you said it really shouldn't be the end goal. My point is even "intimate" fragrances can get you noticed so wear what you love.😊

Justin I hope you don’t get upset with what I’m about to say but someone has to.. Jeremy Fragrance is to blame for pioneering and pushing this fantasy driven fragrance culture. Now let’s be honest, he’s also someone who influenced and inspired ALOT of our frag reviewers today and hey he even lured me in at first with his brilliant captions and beautiful women standing next to him (being somewhat revealing) in the thumbnails. It wasn’t just him though and I think we also understand that but other people saw how what he was doing was working for him and followed suit. Thank you for reaching this point of maturity within your journey to be able to understand it’s not all about the “Worlds sexiest fragrance that’s going to make you a stepfather”, and now in humility you’ve in a way reached your hand back to pull out other people who still may be stuck in this frag utopia. Ladies & Gents, wear and buy your fragrances because YOU truly love them. Don’t fall victim to these vain fantasies Justin was referring to. Thank you Bro 🙏🏽 God bless

😂 I wear a cheap perfume called Satino which is linear and smells like a skin scent to my nose. My fiance came home one day and said the lady at the salon wanted to know what perfume i always wear. Im about six feet away from this lady when i walk past her everyday 😅. Also asked my coworker when she could smell my regular Issey and it was perfectly within hugging/kissing range. So most of these so called skin scents arent actually skin scents. It is our own noses playing tricks on us.

Awesome point of view Justin I have a rather big collection of 160 bottles which i have been collected since 2004 and not all of them i LOVE the ones which are from those days i purchased early on in my journey i do really enjoy the vast majority also this is an easy hobby to fall fast down the rabbit hole so please guys dont get pushed into the fact when you hear about hype beasts that it's the best fragrance ever always try before you buy hype beasts are not guaranteed to get compliments. As far a performance just because a person doesn't tell you you smell good doesn't mean they can't smell you one way to think of it is they think it subconsciously but not necessarily say it out loud i work a automotive technician and I wear them for me as long as I know I smell good then if I get a compliment from one of the boys at work or the office girls which happens from time to time then it's a bonus, as long as the wife enjoys it then I'm happy. If you have a weak fragrance use a travel atomiser, as that is their function to able to reapply during the day, or just take your bottle with you as I do. Justin I have to say your videos are a breath of fresh air and that you were the first reviewer that I subscribed to here on KZbin

I think it depends on the person wearing the fragrance. Im an introvert and recently a coworker told me my cologne (cedrat boise) was a “breathe of fresh air” and I was flattered but mostly got self conscious thinking I might have oversprayed. Ever since then, I reduced my number of sprays for that fragrance. I tend to avoid being “that cologne guy” at work. And outside work, I’ve seen people look but hesitant to approach me cos I dont look approachable sometimes. Those who get compliments mostly are those with an approachable vibe.
@stayfreshproductions
@stayfreshproductions Жыл бұрын
You have a point--appearing approachable affects whether or not people approach you. And when people compliment you, you're not wearing too much! It's just enough. If it was too much, most people wouldn't say anything at all. They'd just think their thoughts and leave.

I agree that scent is by far the most important thing but I also see the need for performance. I wear my fragrances for me but often I do want to smelt by others. I love Dior homme intense but when I wear my 2022 bottle, after an hour neither my girlfriend, nor anyone around me, nor myself can smell it without directly smelling my skin, which does suck.

You and her are probably fatigued from getting used to the intense Homme for so long. I'm sure strangers can s you as you walk past. Sillage is different than smelling your skin. A fragrance can be a skin scent and still waft in the air. If youve been sniffing hard to fi d it on your skin then you're not doing your olfactory senses any favors.

I love your analysis, Justin. This whole obsession with silage and projection tells me a lot of folks out there are trying to use fragrances to make up for other shortcomings. There are far more important areas you should work on with yourself other than how strongly you smell. More often than not, people will be more attracted to your confidence and intellect, not your perfume, and the latter requires more work than the other. Moreover, in countries like Japan, wearing strong fragrances is a big no-no, and in fact is more of a way to repel people than attract them. If people do like the smell of your fragrances, chances are it will be one of your clean, simple scents, not a niche one.

If I put it on and it's gone by the time I arrive at the office, I'd rather choose another fragrance alltogether. Thank God, we've got thousands of options and a lot of them are actually great, whlist performing decently, too.

I think, if you're already a confident You, and you wear that fragrance You like, and it complements your confidence by making you feel better or by completing the look that you're going for, you can come off as very inviting and approachable to certain people, and they'll feel more comfortable around you, which means they're more likely to notice and compliment you on your scent, even if you're wearing a weaker fragrance. I agree with you on the bigger picture but in general when I get a perfume especially when I pay premium I'd like it to be "smellable?"😂 even for me I wanna feel it a bit. Sometimes I buy something and I like the smell of it but 30 minutes and I can't smell it "not noseblind". It's okay to have bit of both. Of course if you hate a thing and buy it just for others that's a big no no.

I only wear fragrances that i "love" or my girl "loves." But performance is not the biggest thing for me. I don't need fragrances to last forever or project a huge amount. That said i DO care about fragrances being liked by others. I DO tend to like what others like. I'm not that guy who likes weird stuff. So like love crowd pleasers. I don't care that others wear something. I love BDC. I don't care that a niche lover thinks it's basic. So i buy for me or my mate. And what i love is often a crowd pleaser. I'm fine with that. BUT i don't care much about projection or how long something lasts (aside from the point that lasting longer means i save money cause i'm not respraying).

I keep it simple: if I like how it smellls and its not too expensive then I buy it. I am not concerned with performance, sillage, or compliments. I do want people to think I smell good even if they don't outwardly express it, especially the ladies. 😀

I believe many people are fine with fragrances that “smell good” as long as they have the so called “beast mode” performance.. Which whatever… do you.

The inconvenient truth of the frag community is that essentially NOBODY wants to smell you, even if it’s “good”. Maybe your significant other but that’s about it. And that goes 1000x for the gym - the term “gym scent” should be banned! Like Justin preaches, wear what you like FOR YOU

Fragrance have to project enough for ME to smell it and last long. I don't wanna spray it again behind every corner. Don't care about mile long projection or compliment factor. Can understand ppl who insist on projection coz they wanna attract girl or a guy. Nice smell,charisma,dopamine rushing. I'm an 45, family man and fragrances are for my personal enjoyment. One thing I can't understand is buying skin scent frags. Keeping my arm glued to my nose is not something I wanna do.

I wear fragrances purely for my own enjoyment. If I need attention for them, it’s like a dude that buys a really cool car so others notice him. He doesn’t even necessarily have to enjoy the car which is pretty sad honestly.

I agree, but i really get compliments from strangers, most of times in the elevator, when they enter, they just smile and say whatever you wear, you smell very nice ! funny fact from my life:- i never get them from people I know XD they never notice my scent as strangers do, maybe that depends also where do you live and community surrounding you!

This is a great video Justin! I bought PDM Layton on a discounter, and was really hoping the price was justified based off a lot of comments. To be honest, I don't find it that special, and I was buying based off the perception that others would like it. Rookie mistake. I much prefer my go-to dumb-reach fragrance, Dior Homme. That stuff makes me feel super confident and I could care less if anyone else likes it or not, cause I wear it for myself!

As someone who owns several “weak” and strong fragrances I agree. Scent, how it makes me feel, the scenario/situation, how it compliments my presence/style, and how it fits into my collection are what matters most. Others somewhat important but secondary. That said there needs to be some level of performance. I draw the line with luxury companies charging top dollar and then watering down the fragrances and charging more. The concern is more with the expensive bottle lasting than the fragrance lasting throughout the day. Plus the whole principle of it, bad ethics.

IMO The best answer is this.. The whole purpose of wearing a fragrance is to enhance pheromones. And the purpose to enhance pheromones is to attract a suitable partner If the partner is unable to smell the fragrance. Then the product is not achieving it's intended goals And my best example is.. I'm not attracted to a woman who smells foul , and the attraction definitely amplifies when she smells pleasant. So my goal is to project and smell as pleasant as possible ( disclaimer I'm single , but this would still apply if I was trying to please my future wife )

I hear what you’re saying Eric. But that is your point of wearing fragrances! That may not apply to everyone. It’s like saying the only point of wearing a hat is to keep the head warm. For many, it’s mostly about self-expression.

totally agree. If I don't like it I don't buy it regardless of the vibe. I remember Le Male and flankers were and probably still are overly hyped, I tired them, didn't move me much so I never bought any. I have to really love the perfume or at least like it very much to use it. Performance comes next, as for compliments, I really don't seek them. Decades ago I would have felt good about getting them, now I am rather indifferent, but I never really chased them. I remember decades ago buying L' Eau Bleue d'Issey over D&G pour Homme because I liked it more and against the sales lady's recommendation.

Sometimes it's just a balancing act among performance, scent profile/quality, and price... for me anyways... for instance, I have a bottle of Frapin 1270, which I probably should have sampled first, because though I love the scent profile and quality, it simply does not last beyond an hour on my scent... so it wasn't worth the $100

I def love scents for me first. I find myself just going to my collection and smelling multiple frags just cause and even wearing them around the house and sometimes to bed. Secondly, i find scents intruguing in regard to causing/enhancing different moods, the same way you can drink a tea and feel better I do enjoy compliments as well, so when I go out, i take into account where im going, what im doing, and who im going to be around. At that point, I woild like to receive compliments, but it'll never deter me from something I like or encourage me to wear fragrances I dont like. The End. Lol

I think one of the reasons people wear fragrances they do not like is because they must have bought such fragrances because of the hypes or misleading reviews from reviewers. They continue to wear those fragrances because they do not want their money to be wasted. Methinks.

You’re the review the fragrance game needs and we don’t deserve you bro 😂 I swear! Compliments only sweeten the deal really. You already know you smell good. But honestly the only thing that matters first is the scent. Performance is nice to have but you can always reapply throughout the day. I personally love projection and I’m definitely an oversprayer but when I know the scent is strong and I put on a bit too much I get a bit anxious 😂

I 100% agree with you and I love that this video is like the sequel of your video "I WISH Fragrance Reviewers Would Do MORE Of This." To me Longevity > Projection, but then again I'm not the type of person that likes to attract attention. Like you said before fragrance should be a complement and not be a centerpiece.

I'd like my fragrance to project at least from my chest to my nose so i can enjoy it, that's it. That's my criteria projection wise and very few fragrances fail to meet it.
@stayfreshproductions
@stayfreshproductions Жыл бұрын
I totally get that. Keep in mind though, that wearing fragrances on your chest is the quickest way to get olfactory fatigue so that you struggle to smell it little by little! You’ll have an easier time smelling it throughout the day if it’s not going directly into your nostrils constantly. Spraying behind the ears, and if you are wearing an open collar shirt, inside the collar on your collar bones, will actually help you get wafts for longer without getting overloaded.

Confession to make. I bought Detour Noir recently, despite of pinching my nervous system with a certain note. I was def. stepping over myself cause of the hype. But we learn about it. Fragrances are a direct mirror if we are willing to look and reflect our actions but on the other hand everything can be.... I can appreciate a voice of common sense within this whole game, it is more than needed. Bless

You guys are getting compliments? :D Tbh I use fragrances like music- you listen to what you like, creating soundtrack to your day. Fragrance is the same, just with the smell.. But as you mentioned, i would like my "music" (fragrance) to be played more than 2-4 hours, especially in higher price tag. If fragrance smells good but does not last, it is like earbuds with super sound quality, that lasts 1hr.. Ok but sorry, not for me. It does not mean my music must blare to everybody (oversprayed or super strong sillage), but to someone notice and compliment, I consider to be a good thing.
