When I lived in China, one Chinese thing that always tripped me up is saying how many years of something versus years old, in Chinese they're two different things. So when people would ask me how long I had lived in China, I would reply 'I am four years old'. Oops! Haha!

It is much easier to learn vocabulary than sentence structure. That tends to be a deeper level of linguistic sense. It is one of the odd things about English as a language actually. While it has mixture of vocabulary from all the various influences; Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Danish, Norman, Medieval Latin, the sentence structure is most closely aligned with Nordic sentence structure. So either the Vikings had a greater linguistic influence on the linguistic development than previously thought, or the strain of AS most common in England was more akin to Nordic languages in their grammar than to other Germanic languages.

It's called an analytic language. Analytic languages have very few inflections (tense, case, voice, plurality, person, grammatical gender, etc.) and convey these informations via a more complex syntax. Chinese is one of the most analytic languages in the world.

It should be obvious that when adults are learning new languages, they try to fashion the new language from their native language. We aren’t children and don’t learn the same way. So at first, we have to learn how to structure the new language in my case, English, so that I can think the structure in English then find the words in that new language in the proper structure. Over time that becomes natural to speak and ultimately hear.

If you speak a little Mandarin Singlish is no problem. In fact, I've often thought English should abandon it's grammar and adopt Mandarin grammar, and Chinese should abandon hanzi and adopt pinyin. Combine them and we'd have a simple Universal language, English words, Chinese grammar, Pinyin writing.

Actually it's way worse than a frog, it's a toad. The original Chinese phrase is 癞蛤蟆想吃天鹅肉 （A toad is craving for the tender swan meat), which means an ugly man is lustful for a stunning woman and he should drop such an unrealistic idea. Usually said by a strongly disapproving person gossiping behind one's back. There's another one (usually suggests the speaker is jealous if said by a man) 好白菜被猪拱了 （The good cabbage is snouted down by a pig) for the sight/comment of a couple of an ugly man and a stunning woman. These are often very rude remarks said by disapproving and judgemental persons. Usually gossip remarks behind the back. So don't use them to the faces of people unless you want conflicts.

Exactly it's kinda strange. Like they have an idiomatic expression for almost every situation and there are different variations for each. Most accents are also just emphasis on the wrong syllable. In ENGlish, we put EMphasis on the first SYLLable. But, eg, French uses the last syllable (or the ^ accent in rare exceptions.) Once you realize this and regularly practice, you can speak other languages much more understandably.

I have a Ukranian coworker (speaks Ruski, Polski as well) and he seems very lonely. I love languages but I'm incredibly reading-oriented, and the entirely new alphabet seems daunting to me... But I'd also like to know more than "Nyet, Borys! Ostnovkya! Dermo..." when working with 277v circuits and heavy machinery together.

I believe "no can do" actually DID come from Chinese grammer, but I heard it was originally a term to mock chinese workers who said something along the lines of "can't do" or something. They'd say "No, can do" in response and it eventually picked up into a new saying. I genuinely don't know how true this is, so nobody come for me. I *THINK* I heard this somewhere. I don't know for a fact. I'm about 65% sure it's true.

and in Chinese you nerver change the form of a verb or a noun, like do / does / did, apple / apples. These kind of things never exists. If you want to say "apples", you just say "serval apple", and if you say "apple" in Chinese, it implies no quantity information. If you want to say "I did", you just say "I do before". This makes Chinese grammar different from 99% of other languages in the World. When I firstly learned English in the middle school, I was so confused about tense and case and could not understand why verb "be" needs to be changed to am / is / are / was / were / been? what is the point of doing this? It seems adds no additional information at all, which is also the logic of Chinese -- if it adds no additional info, we don't need it.

There is a lot of people whose second language is english and they are doing pretty good. It's the best language for international communication, for sure. I'm not really good at english cause i only learned it in school, but know a lot of people who are.

Conversely, the teacher can't spend the time to help you memorise characters, either, it's all about being patient for a long time until they go in your long term memory, you will never forget them, trust me.
