At first I thought so as well. But if you really look into Phil's history he took over a Bulls team that lost previously to the Pistons. That Bulls team were coached by Doug Collins. Phil Jackson with that same roster was able to go 15-2 in the playoffs and sweep the Pistons. And when Phil left the Bulls, Jordan decided to retire because he didn't want to play for another coach. If you ask Shaq, he will say what an influence Phil had on his career and him winning the MVP to win his first championship.

This phrase that, “Players win championships”, is not always true. We have seen the most talented players form super teams, but they were never able to win a championship. Majority of the time, almost every team or dynasty has won with an implemented system. Some of us seem to have forgotten, because we were all involved with the individual players, and their talents/skills. The Bulls and 2000s Lakers had the Triangle Offense, the Warriors and Spurs had off ball passing movement/3 point shooting, the 80s Lakers had transition passing movement, etc. Second of all, every team or dynasty needs chemistry. Scoring between 60 or 70 points between 2 or 3 all star/superstar players is usually not a recipe for success. You need your players to pass, rebound, or play defense if you would like to have a system.

- Jackson is the GOAT of coaches. JVG is a good enough coach but he's also right. Jackson coached: MJ #1, Shaq #11, Kobe #10, Pippen -- all of them are Top 15 with pippen at #32 JVG had: Ewing and an injured Yao-Tmac combo. Great players but limited careers although Ewing is ranked #40.
