WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 23/35
12.36pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 22 August 2010… my all-time favourite Elvis Presley song, ‘If I Can Dream’ written by Walter Earl Brown in 1968.
This was my last ‘Aperitif’ performance of the second series of ‘Weekend Wogan’… and what a finale it was!!!💥 I clearly remember being completely and utterly blown away and overwhelmed by my brilliant BRILLIANT band and singers… they nailed it. What a gift!
And you can hear for yourself what dear Terry’s response was… and rightly so! There are only three horn players playing here, Paul Newton on trumpet, Peter Effamy on alto sax, and Adrian Revell on tenor sax, and yet it sounds like there are thirty of them. A credit, not only to those phenomenal players, but also to our stellar trombone player and my assistant musical director, Adrian Fry, for his wonderful transcription (taken from Elvis’ original recording) which excluded him because we needed him to play the Hammond organ part.
Kirstie Roberts, Sue Acteson and Niamh McNally sound SO sensational and did my vocal transcription proud. And then there are the chaps in the rhythm section, the magnificent Bryan Hargreaves superbly channeling the great Hal Blaine on drums, Darren Loveday on guitar as exemplary as ever, and of course, Neil Fairclough on bass who is the ‘rock’ in whatever band he plays in.
Something must have clicked or maybe it was just a coincidence but it was only a few days after this performance that I got a call from the BBC asking me if I would like to perform at Hyde Park with the BBC Concert Orchestra alongside people like Tom Jones, Suzi Quatro and Craig David, and even Priscilla Presley and Elvis’ TCB band for BBC Radio 2’s ‘Elvis Forever’ concert celebrating what would have been Elvis’ 75th birthday. I said ‘YES”! 😁
After this final show of the second series, there was a six-week break until we would begin the third and FINAL series of ‘Weekend Wogan’ in October 2010.
Turn it up and enjoy one of my own personal favourite live performances of the whole year. ❤️
