What a fucking fantastic video, it's what I've needed to hear. I had a four year layoff from parkinsonism after 6 years of lifting, and I've had to try to remember everything all over again, but I've been reading and listening to everything I can whilst doing my thing, very true that after a while, you will always remember the basics, but that doesn't mean you're an expert.

I think we all made so many mistakes earlier on in our lifting careers that we’d do totally differently if we could go back & do it all over again. I made so many mistakes in my teens because of ego lifting & listening to bad advice, but thankfully I only got injured a couple times before learning my lessons. Looking back, I wish I had hired a professional coach like one of us to teach me what I needed to know back then..... Solid video brother!!! 💪👍

That Dunning Kruger effect in fitness is mad present in the transitional stage. I remember being in the gym one day and seeing someone lowbar squat for the first time. I was worried and thought he was in danger of hurting himself, even though he was moving the weight controlled and smooth. Luckily I didn't tell him anything and make a fool out of myself. Some time later I found out about the lowbar squat and realized he was doing everything right. Even now I see comments on youtube telling people who lowbar squat that "they're doing it wrong!" And that they're leaning forward too much and that they're going to hurt themselves. I think the most ridiculous case of this is when this dude was doing cheat curls and people in the comments were saying he was an ego maniac that's going to hurt himself. This dude was just light swinging in his cheat curls and easily handling the weight, he wasn't swinging hard, arching his back, and struggling with the weight. Yet, people really thought this dude was doing nothing but stroking his own ego and in danger of snapping like a pretzel stick, I can't believe these people. Each time I see those people in the comments it gets me angry, and it's unfortunate that there's a lot of them.

As someone who turns 50 in 6 months the only thing I would really change is I would have started Olympic lifting as a teenager. I started lifting weights at 16 years old and mixed bodybuilding and powerlifting for about 15 years. I then switched gears and started training for explosive strength and athleticism. I always went full ROM from the very beginning because I asked questions and talked to the right guys in the gym. I left my ego out of it and learned the technique properly. Always ATG squats, btn press, full range bench, etc. And, to this day I still do those movements. No injuries, great mobility, joints, tendons, ligaments are 100%. They strengthened properly as I did over the many years. Normally I am very anti-personal trainer because a lot of them look like they need personal trainers of their own lol. I think proper bodybuilding gave me the foundation and static strength to be healthy and continue to push myself to move big weights and training for athleticism, olympic lifts, compound movements, etc in my 30’s and beyond as kept me big and strong. I’ll never quit.

On one hand I look back on all the mistakes and time wasted in the gym over the years and wonder how much stronger/bigger/more athletic I would be now if I had trained correctly in relation to my goals from the get go, but reality doesn't work that way which is a tough pill to swallow. To succeed going forward, we have to be grateful for all the mistakes and time wasted because those things have led us down the path to more effective and optimal ways to train, being able to do the movements and program correctly while knowing what is worthwhile and what is bullsh!t, accepting that we are ever growing and evolving to become more knowledgable and better at what we do

Consequently i subscribed to Powerlifting USA and was introduced to better advice in articles by Marty Gallagher and the programmes of the top lifters of their era. The problems i encountered were to do with terrible equipment, bent bars, plates so thick the most that would load on an Olympic bar was about 270kg and 3rd world country facilities.

My first biggest mistake was becoming consistent at 31 rather than 18 lol. Other than that I’d say if I could start all over when I did get consistent, it’s dropping all the unwanted fat right off the bat then building up from there vs. recomping at the start. My goals now are to just get as muscular as staying lean (small surpluses) will allow while maintaining good aerobic capacity. Closing in on 2 years and wonder where my goals will shift moving forward.

@@EnkiriElite You may have addressed this in an older video, but how come you decided to go up in weight? The reason I'm asking is because I'm a sports and exercise science student and we're being taught that for various athletic endeavors (including sprinting and other track&field sports) it's better to hold a bit more body fat (13-17% range), especially for natural athletes (the theory being that having enough fat will contribute to a healthy amount of testosterone production). How has that impacted your athletic ability, because on the other hand weighing more means more weight to move, which requires more energy and force output?

My beginner story: So I used to play baseball back in high school, I was skinny fat & weak, so I couldn’t hit the ball very far or run fast at all. I thought, I need to be stronger & faster, so summer of my sophomore year, I started doing jump ropes, like crazy amounts of jump ropes, and that’s all I did, I got to a point where I was doing 20minutes straight with reasonable intensity, MULTIPLE times per day. By the time school started again, I was definitely lighter & faster, but surprisingly, I was also stronger, I hit my first home run the third day after school reopened, I wasn’t shocked then, but I am now, like how tf did JUMP ROPES make me stronger? Also, I developed Osgood-Shlatter disease, turns out jump roping on concrete is bad for your knees. And while recovering from that, I found Athlean-X🙃🤦🏻♂️
