Tiny Tim used to talk a lot about Rudy Vallee. Indeed, hearing the man himself now it seems that Tim was almost channeling Vallee through the filter of his own eccentricities.

I was lucky enough to have a stepfather who owned a record store in the 1950s. Back then, you could still find some of the swing music. My real father's mother had a collection of sheet music and a piano, but I can't remember her ever using a record-player.

It's interesting that the near-falsetto sensuality of Vallee's voice, combined with his "bedroom eyes" made him the "Elvis" of his generation. In his later years he played a "cartoon" of himself. It's interesting that in an interview, he spoke of his first movie, based on his song hit "Vagabond Lover" as being so bad they are "... still fumagating the theaters where it played." I would have love to have met him. Great song. Great rendition. Rudy, we miss you. Dennis

Oh phooey! Rudy Vallee isn't doing anyone but Rudy Vallee. He and Al Bowlly are both their own men, and didn't have imitate anybody. As to the immortal Judy Garland, who even knew she recorded this song? Ignorant rather than chauvinistic probably is more to the point. Cliff Edwards' version is my personal favorite (and I absolutely LOVE both R.V and A.B.) Ukelele Ike delivers the song with such a light, gallant touch, almost tossing it off, that it has a particular poignance. "There is nothing I couldn't do, if I had you." That's the inspiration of love alright.

If ever there were two songs that fit FDR they were Happy Days are Here Again ( See the two movies Sunrise at Campobello (1960), and Warm Springs (2005), and the other song, Thou Swell, Thou Witty, Thou Grand. Boy do we need an FDR now, one who is not simply "of the People, by the People, and for the People" but one who is WITH the people in our sufferings. Whom may that be? I think it just might be Tammy Duckworth, of Illinois. Check her out via Google. I love Georgia, and take care.
