It's from the 1994 Lincoln Center production of Carousel. Their names are Michael Hayden and Sally Murphy. This was a surpassingly beautiful production! The CD is available.

To all the kids who want to pursue acting in musical theatre: watch this performance. This is a four and a half minute master class in text interpretation and breathing modern life into a classic. Better take some notes!

Every time I revisit clips from this revival, I remember how much of a shame this incredible production was not released commercially for all to share. It is possibly the most definitive Carousel ever staged. Nicholas Hytner and Sir Kenneth Macmillan brought out the gritty aspects of the material. Michael Hayden, Sally Murphy, Audra Macdonald et al. were the perfect cast. Hayden's singing may not have been the strongest among Billys out there. But his acting was second to none. I recently saw Nathan Gunn in NYC last year at Avery Fisher Hall. Despite his operatic prowess, Gunn's acting paled in comparison. Hayden and Murphy captured the tumultuous and romantic relationship these two had. I can still hear Hayden softly cry out "Julie, Julie" to Murphy while she sat on a chair holding the star. It broke your heart. Macmillan's ballet was a stunning, stand alone masterpiece all in itself. It told an entire story through years and gave us an in depth look into Louise all without a single paragraph of dialogue in beautiful movement. Bob Crowley's fantastic set evokes New England, heaven and hell, coupled with the gorgeous lighting. And last but not least, Hytner's staging and contributions to streamlining the story. I can only wish they bring back this production like they are doing with CABARET at Studio 54 this year.

Hayden’s interpretation of Soliloquy wins in my book because of one thing I’ve only heard him do. When he’s singing the My Little Girl portion, he says “when she comes home to me. M-me….” So many recordings don’t have Billy repeat or emphasize “me”. Hayden’s Billy KNOWS that he’s the problem, and he so desperately doesn’t like that he is. But he has no idea how to fix himself. And your heart breaks for him.

Absolutely and devastatingly beautiful rendition. Bet Rogers and Hammerstein were listening intently from the far beyond with smiles on their faces.

I'm just going to say, this is amazing, to hope that it is still being viewed. One of the best versions of this song.

I saw this stunningly breathtaking staging, and still consider it the definitive version. Michael Hayden and Sally Murphy as these two mismatched lovers were perfection. At the end when Billy visited Julie for the last time for redemption and he wails, “Julie... Julie...” It was simply heart breaking. And watch Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s ballet that tells the story of Louise.

This is the best interpretation I've seen. Murphy sings beautifully, effortlessly and fits her character perfectly; it's unbelievable to watch. I just wish we could have the full "bench scene"... I wanna see the kiss! :)

We're all in agreement that the televised special was a real tribute to R&H. This was an amazing production, with compelling performances by Sally Murphy and Michael Hayden. It was exciting to see them, and Audra Mc Donald and the rest of the cast, in a fresh new interpretation of the characters and their relationships in the story.

Singer is Sally Murphy. I remember watching this performance when I was about 6 and then I used to watch it back on video time and time again. The show presented by Julie Andrews and every single performance on the show was outstanding. This is the best interpretation of this song I have ever seen and I still get tingles watching this 22 years on. I'm so glad I found a copy of this online! Thank you to whoever posted!

Wow, I recorded the entire PBS's "Some Enchanted Evening" tribute to Oscar Hammerstein in the mid 90s. I might still have it on an old VHS tape somewhere. The bench scene is still the highlight of the Hammerstein special. Listening to the original 1994 Broadway cast recording, Michael Hayden and Sally Murphy are still the best.

These two are fantastic. I saw this in L.A. at the Ahmanson, and as I recall it was Patrick Wilson as the male lead. He was good, but Michael Hayden is superb. And Murphy is a great actress too.

I saw it on here awhile back -I think it actually was just a recording of the show, prob bootleg - and i had it in my "favorites" for ages. I finally took it out of there, and now I can't find it anywhere! I saw this production and it was incredible. This actress was superb. And the ballet was out of this world. The opening....I could go on and on! Where did that damn video go?!!!

Thanks very much for posting this; it brings back great memories. Over 30 years of theater-going in NY, I've seen lots and lots of broadway musicals, but this 1994 revival of "Carousel" remains my favorite production of a musical--I saw it three times. Brilliantly directed, acted and choreographed (the ballet in the second act brought the house down), with the most beautiful sets I've ever seen, it was amazing and moving. I just wish I could buy a DVD of the full show!

Sally Murphy is a joy with her interpretation, so believable and much different from Julie’s I have seen. I was hoping to hear Michael Hayden sing to the end, as he was really getting an interesting Billy going.

Well done by both, and beautiful singing that had the character right. (But I wish they whole bench scene had been recorded as it was probably excellent.)

She's doing a faint New England accent (as just about everyone did in the production) and he's doing a slight New York accent. I can understand hearing British in her speaking, but can't hear the Scottish in his at all. Anyway, they're both absolutely bewitching. By far the most compelling acting I've ever seen done in this scene.

Thank you for uploading this! I still have this on VHS somewhere, but the quality isn't as good as your recording. I was fortunate to see this production during my first trip to NYC in 1994 and it's still one of my favorite theatregoing experiences. Michael Hayden's performance was sublime--wish there was more of it preserved on video. The memory of it will stay with me forever, though.

What a beautiful performance. So unlike the strait-laced performance of Shirley Jones in the 1950's. What a difference 3 decades made! Sally Murphy has such spontaneity, such insistence, her tousled hair, her uncertainty mingled with certainty.... What became of her? I love the song, love the performance. Too bad we didn't hear Michael Hayden.

The two are marvelous, youthful, spontaneous. Though she does break up at peculiar! Entirely predictable and forgiveable. I love the beauty of her "pass me by". She makes the difficult phrases sound simple and natural. But I was waiting to hear Billy's respnse. Where is it? Only half the scene is portrayed, a disappointment.
@royalnt15 жыл бұрын
Do you mean when she sings "got to be much more particular"? 'Cause that break is a choice, not a mistake. You can hear her make it on the album as well. It's like Julie can't help but be pleased with herself for the rhyme she just made.

@DaydreamingSecrets9 жыл бұрын
why is she in distress constantly
@MrBitchen9 жыл бұрын
Was that a (?) question?
@AvalonMorley9 жыл бұрын
DaydreamingSecrets Because her emotions are all in a whirl, and are confusing the hell out of her, and she's just lost her job, and hasn't even a home to go to, or more than a few cents in her purse. And she's just stepped away from the only 'normal' she knew of for her life, and defied the ultimate authority she had controlling her, and she doesn't even have a mother or father to go to, for help or comfort. And she's realizing she really loves this guy, who almost surely won't feel the same about her, and who won't likely bring any good prospects, even if he does care for her. Scary.
@MrBitchen9 жыл бұрын
Damn... that was quite a comment. Thanks for your insight!

MrBitchen You're welcome! I just love good theater, and when musical theater is really good (a highly individual judgment, that can be very contentious), it's among the greatest of humankind's achievements (how's that for highfalutin'?~but I really believe that).
