so about the argument about prefilling the filter, I guess some say in doing so, you're allowing unfiltered oil into the crankcase. but, that unfiltered oil is completely new, unused oil, so what's the big deal???

Personally, I don’t think it really is a big deal at all.
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 2 жыл бұрын
The argument against prefilling is that most people fill the filter from the large hole in the center, which is the clean side. IF the new oil happened to have contaminants in it for whatever reason, they would go straight into the engine's oil supply and could damage bearings, plug oil feed holes, etc. If those contaminants were poured into the engine and ended up in the oil pan, it's not a big deal because the filter will likely catch them before they could cause any damage. New oil can contain particles, look at the bottom of a Pennzoil Platinum jug after it sat for a while and you will see what I mean.

People are stupid "dirty discussing unfiltered crystal clear clean new oil" give me a break. Also an "empty engine" still has a lot of oil in the lines and galleys but it doesn't really matter. It can be as much as 2-3 quarts. Usually around 1 for small engines. Check the engine dry fill capacity and refill capacity. The difference tells you how much oil stays in there that can't be taken out.

@@elihernandez330 That's true although I'm not aware of any typical passenger cars or light trucks with 2-3 quarts of oil remaining once its drained. @TheJcrandazzo
@TheJcrandazzo Жыл бұрын
@@thetechlibrarian From a psychological point of view yes.. Any good grade of oil meeting manuf specs will perform equally as well . The viscosity(thickness) in itself does not give it more padding but better suited to keep the metal from metal contact as does any good grade of oil. A poor oil can cause other problems relating to wear and over time decrease smoothness through wear factors like fouling plugs etc..Any good grade of oil will give you unnoticeable difference in smoothness. Stay away from the cheap or improper grade oil.A higher viscosity index is based upon engine tolerances and fuel economy targets.The higher padding would not be significantly noticeable but a heavier oil requires more energy to push around the engine, hence more fuel required and stress. If you have worn out engine a heavier viscosity may help with oil loss and quiet down some moving parts as an insulator.

Nice video! From my understanding of GM's Dexos specs, I don't think you are doing your engine any favors by using the Euro spec oil. GM's Dexos 1 Gen 2 is the updated Dexos specs with stricter requirements. From my understanding, Dexos 2 is a totally different spec primarily created to protect the emissions systems of light duty diesel engines by limiting sulphated ash, phosphorous, and sulfur (SAPS), so basically that means it has less of the traditional anti wear and anti oxident additives and likely other additives instead. Exactly how effective the replacement additives are I don't know, but I would expect the euro oil's overall engine protection to be worse than standard Pennzoil Platinum if anything. But realistically either oil will work perfectly fine in your application, that engine won't care one bit.

Your thinking is exactly wrong! European vehicles have factory recommended OCI's that are 2x and 3x what is recommended by US manufacturers. You are correct that the additives used in Euro oils are not "traditional" and are not recognized by traditional oil analysis services. I would take any of the ACEA specs over dexos specifications. If you want even tighter (higher) spec oils look for Porsche or MB specs!
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 Жыл бұрын
@@goldsburg Amsoil themselves says that their low SAPS oils shouldn't be used in older engines since they don't protect the engine as well as their mid or full SAPS oils and their data sheets reflect this. They also said the specialty low SAPS additives are much more expensive than traditional additives. The longer oil change intervals in Europe aren't exclusively because of different oils either, many European cars also have significantly higher oil capacities and larger filters. Even my mom's 2.5L Volvo held 7 quarts of oil. Oil is much more expensive in Europe than America too, which I believe is actually the main reason people there don't change their oil as often. I agree that ACEA specs are a better system than API specs since they have different specs for different applications instead of just a stupid one size fits all SN rating or something that almost everything meets anyways.

11:24. I'd rather have unfiltered new oil from a jug flowing at startup than a dry start for those 3 seconds. I also use bigger than stock filters. I use a 10590XL on my Tahoe. It is the same diameter and thread pitch, but deeper. The factory-installed filter PF59 was longer like that but AC/Delco discontinued it and reverted to the smaller PF46. A PF61 will fit your truck and not be as high in the oil pan cutout. It won't hang as low as the pan, so it's still protected from physical damage (although if you manage to hit the filter on a rock, the cast aluminum oil pan would be screwed anyway). It's also easier to grab when you service your truck next time. I also like to use a slightly larger filter because there is less oil pressure drop from the filter media. There is more media and therefore less restriction for the oil flow.. Especially when it gets old, dirty and partially clogged. It also adds slightly more oil capacity to the system. It may only be 1/4 quart, but it's added capacity. I like to use a 0w-30 synthetic oil. It is very thin at startup.. the 0w is the viscosity at 32⁰F. The 30 is the viscosity at operating temperature. It does not hurt the engine at operating temp, it only flows better and provides immediate oil pressure when cold. I know that you don't need to worry about cold temps too much in Tennessee. But I'm like you, I want to give my engine every advantage to last a good, long time. I should look into buying a filtermag like you.

Some manufacturers say specifically not to pre-fill filters. Just crank the engine in clear flood mode for a couple seconds, then start it. It avoids a dry start and the potential for contaminates to enter the filter during pre-filling.
@EricErnst
@EricErnst 2 жыл бұрын
@@inoahmann7542 you are still cranking the engine with ZERO oil pressure. As I stated above, I'd rather have brand new oil from a freshly opened bottle in my filter than crank my engine a few hundred rpms for a several seconds. The bearings and lifters get oil much more quickly if the filter is full. I know that many manufacturers don't want pre-filled filters. But on an LS V8 engine, the oil filters are vertical and it is very easy to fill them and not spill any oil. If brand new oil is dirty enough that they don't want it on the clean side of my oil filters, why am I just pouring it into my valvecover to run down and drip over my rocker arms, down to my crank and rods as it flows into my crankcase? How do you know that the "clean" side of an oil filter doesn't have microscopic debris from the manufacturing process? You can do what you like. I'll keep pre-filling my filters. To me, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
@inoahmann7542
@inoahmann7542 2 жыл бұрын
@@EricErnst the risk of contamination is a lot higher with bulk oil, hence the recommendation to not pre-fill. Assuming you're using smaller single use containers, I don't see much risk. On the other hand, I'm a fleet mechanic and I have a few fleet pickup trucks with over 300k miles that have never seen a pre-fill before. Do whatever you want, but I'm gonna continue to follow the direction of the company that designed the vehicle. My company has never had a bearing failure in any of our 50+ trucks. Dexos refer to oil viscosity. More accurately, is about HTHS, high temperature high sear simulation. A low HTHS is under 3.5, a high HTHS is above 3.5. This is only about 5w30 oil. A 5w20 oil will be always low HTHS, as 5w40 will be always high HTHS. The practical use of this value is about fuel consumption. Lower HTHS produce a better fuel consumption rate.

I also keep a simple spreadsheet (free Google Sheets) to keep up with general maintenance, repairs, and costs for each of my vehicles and my small engines (generator, lawn equipment, etc.) This gives me a quick way to see my overall cost-per-year in the maintenance side of ownership. I don't track fuel costs & economy in that manner, as I don't have *that* much time on my hands!! Another good tip is the little window service stickers. Most auto supply stores will give you blanks that you can fill in, and stick up in the corner of the windshield, so you've got an easy-to-see reminder. Watch an interesting video about the flow and psi drop across many different filters vs oem spec. How it can increase use of the bypass valve reducing filtration rate or reduce pressure in critical areas like the crank journals etc. I tried this with a fram ultra vs a tough guard base filter and noticed a difference in the oil pressure and idle vibrations. Its not major but notable. The video ended with the consensus if there is an increase in filtering capability there needs to be an increase in media surface area to allow for the same flow rate and pressure after filtration.

My experience with Fram filters in Euro cars has been lackluster. The expensive Fram Ultra filters flow poorly and have collapsed and torn under 5000 miles multiple times in my friends cars. One of my buddies did a 3000 mile interval on their S60R with a frame ultra filter (running Liquimoly Leichtlauf 5W40, it's drag/street car) and it split in half in that short interval. Never have had that issue with Purolator, Mann, Wix, Mobil and Mahle filters

@Dustin Satterfield I can see your point with regard to the cartridge filters from fram. Though the experiments for flow I haven't seen high psi or lack of flow for canister filters. I have a fragile ecodiesel so I only have wix as a quality option but I run a fram ultra on my expedition 5.4

I believe the Euro spec oils are good but all about emissions, ive noticed it evaporates more, read it has less detergents making them prone to get more contaminated in diesel and high compression engines, fuel in oil without detergents makes the oil protection properties drop dramatically, and without cause the oil to turn acidic. I have also changed my oil change intervals UP to 5K miles. Everything is good with this> FOR ME. I must also tell you that I live in Yuma, Arizona, a "VERY EXTREME CLIMATE". 5 k miles, is good, and imagine, I'm changing 2 times, where I "would've changed oil/filter 3 times! That's a BUNCH of $$. I learned my lesson with garbage Pennzoil and Quaker State motor oils along time ago. Will never buy their garbage Paraphere oil. The 2 oils cost me to much in repairs and they told to bad. Although it was in the late 70s. It pulled up oil passages, caused more wear and tear on my engines.

I almost sure that pennzoil oil is manufactured by shell. Therefore pennzoil, shell helix ultra and Mobil 1 is about the same stuff, 60-70 % GTL (gas to liquid), 20-30% PAO and 5-10% esther. This is all about base oil composition. Mobil 1 has a more modern package oil additives, including magnesium instead of calcium. All of them have low HTHS for a better fuel economy. By the way, dexos clasificacion is not something new, is in the market for about 12 or 13 years.

Dexos2 was originally made because the small DPF diesels need low SAPS to save the DPF. It also makes sense that it is a "Euro" formula, Europe has a large number of small DPF diesels. I suppose there are enough Opel and Vauxhall diesel cars for GM to need an oil that fits. This is why it also meets Mercedes 229.51. 229.51 is the specification for the early DPF Sprinter. It's backwards compatible with earlier non-DPF Benz diesels. 14:39 I like what Toyota dealers do. When you get a timing belt replaced, they make a sticker that is hard to remove. It notes the date and mileage of the last timing belt replacement. Having that done on schedule is critical. Always know if your car has a timing belt, and always replace it when the manual tells you to replace it. I'm not sure if other manufacturers make a sticker for timing belt changes that is designed to stay put for a really long time.

I don't know how much quicker or if its worth it to you but on my Chevy when I prefil the filter, the oil pressure builds quicker. It's probably just barely quicker but when it's your truck and you're waiting for pressure it feels like a eternity. I prefil the filter only if it's vertical for obvious reasons. I also o ly go about 4000 to 4500. I also love the ac delco filters, do a good job and I'd say despite what the internet says, it's still a very good filter and amongst most oems it's in the top end of filtration %. 98.5% I belive which is better than the basic filter but not as good as a wix xp but you're not paying wix xp money. These old vortecs don't care that much so I'm sure the delco is just right.

Just check the zinc level on the dexos 2, if its lower, then stick with dexos 1. Older engines (2004ish and below, check you engine specs) with Flat tappet lifters need higher zinc levels to prevent premature wear on the sliding surfaces where the lifters rub on the cam lobes. over the years oil companies have reduced the zinc levels. Because, of government mandates and the harmful effects; zinc additives have on catalytic converters and emission control systems. late 90s early 2000s zinc levels in gasoline engine oil were above 1200 parts per million (PPM). Today, you are lucky if an oil brand has at least 700ppms. Some people are using non S rated Diesel engine oil in their gas engines due to it high level of zinc (1100ish ppm). However, diesel engine oil without an S rating lacks the additives to handle gasoline contaminates and diesel engine oil with an S rating can only have that rating if it reduces the zinc back to regulatory guidance.
