Foreign policy discourse in this country was considered an exclusive entitlement of a clique of "gyaani " diplomats / strategic thinkers , select media heroes , public intellectuals who sat in commentary and judgement and monopolized the public opinion. We all were in awe of them and they would pontificate & even arrogantly put down political leaders like Modi who, in their opinion was unworthy of dealing with the subject. Foreign policy was the "Vedas" for these "brahmins" which was beyond the pale of lesser folks. The EAM quite obviously been given the task to (a) democratize, simplify and popularize at the commoners' level the theory and practise of foreign policy (b) demystify the esoteric portions into comprehensible parts. The EAM is making political dialogue with both his domestic and international constituents to push the emergence of India as a serious global player. This is part of narrative building and embellishments of comprehensive national power and forging of awareness among the common masses . Great work.

Jaishankar is indeed a very articulate, forthright and intelligent man. One cannot but help agree with his realistic views. Too bad that he's aligned himself with a fascist hateful dispensation whose divisive ideology will be seen to be (and sometimes is) buttressed through his articulations. He and his masters (whose attitude in fact DOES seem to be the "My nationalism vs the world" that he says he rejects) should also understand that economic and political development is meaningless without human and intellectual development as well as a content/peaceful society of truly free citizens. If India wants to sit at the high table of the world's powerful and advanced countries, it will have to take their sensibilities and requirements into account (particularly of those countries whose investments and technologies India clearly needs and covets) instead of being seen to be in bed with questionable regimes and theocracies.
