Also Obeah men were feared not because of magic. But their knowledge of poisons and medicinal herbology, botany and being religious and social pillars for slaves that were not aligned with the desires of slave masters and slave traders.

Because it gives people hope, with hope you start thinking you can. If you think you can, you will. The British don’t want nothing around that inspires you. If you want to be a good obeah man, study herbs. If you know what herbs to use you can give a person a drink and convince them you put duppy on them or release them from one.

I’m not saying Obeah/black magic isn’t real, but if we are being historically accurate, the British suppressed all other religious or spiritual practices throughout all their colonies. It was more about buying into Christianity and creating uniformity over those they conquered. Much like Christianity and slavery in the U.S. The Brits did the same everywhere from India, to the African nations, and the Caribbean. Everything in context.
@escarlit
@escarlit Ай бұрын
the goal was to disempower all those groups they “conquered.” this is a mostly jamaican channel hence the focus on OBEAH. your language speaks volumes and you’ve revealed yourself here 👀 “black magic” doesn’t mean what you think it means.

@@escarlit I’m not the enemy. You said exactly what I said. Me using “black magic” to refer to Obeah isn’t speaking any volumes to anything. Once you’re dealing with spirituality, dark magic is possible, even in Christianity. I’m not saying one is great or lesser than the other. You’re revealing your insecurities a tad bit more, brethren. Maybe you would feel more secure in me saying Christianity/black magic. How’s that sir? Didn’t mean to offend the Obeah community….
@shortymono
@shortymono Ай бұрын
@ we are all victims of something. At some point we are certain of our spirituality (whatever it may be) or we aren’t. The gripe against Christianity and those that spread is getting boring. Worship who you want, you don’t have the chains on anymore. You are free! I set you free!!
@escarlit
@escarlit Ай бұрын
@@shortymono once again your language is very telling. this isn't about victimhood, it's about history. you haven't truly engaged with what i said at all. your response is reactive and emotionally charged but i'm insecure? that's rich... learn how to have an intellectual exchange without getting triggered. that includes choosing your words more carefully so that your inevitable biases don't pollute your points. black magic refers specifically to the dark arts. it's not magic performed by members of the diaspora. calling obeah black magic as a non-black person makes you appear ignorant. characterizing imperialists as "conquerors" makes you appear proud-of what i don't know. there is no glory in subjugating other humans and divorcing them from their belief systems for power. in relationships, that's called abuse. get your cognition and communication skills up..

1:21 Incorrect. Obeah or obia is an alternate pronounciation of dibia which is the preist-herbalist of ndi Igbo. The appropriately name for the practice is Omenala; as it is on the land, or Odinani; as per tradition. It is lacking nothing in its original African form and requires no combination with anything indian to be whole. Nor are said African spiritual systems completely compatible with native americans. What we see African diasporans doing is not a mixture of the two as many profess, but African in a non-African environment. So there are substitutions using local items only when an African import can not be sourced. Such things can be sourced today so there is no longer any justification for substitutions nor relying on native/euro new age paraphernalia & concepts.

Is that an African perspective seeking to tell a people of mixed bloodlines what they must do to become more African? Why would they do such a thing if they are affirming what works for them? Are you looking down at their evolutions and innovations as inferior or inadequate? Or are you a purist claiming that African traditions are "pure" and superior and must be followed by mixed people in order for mixed people's practices to be "correct"? Is that what you are saying? Do Jamaicans' and other "black" "diaspora" peoples' practices work for them? If they say yes, then why should they change their traditions to suit another?
@And-lodw
@And-lodw Ай бұрын
You are also right but It's more complex than that. It's not only one thing, the process of colonization and the slave trade went on for centuries, with different cycles and different contexts. I don't know about Jamaica, but in Brazil there are many spiritual practices with different ranges and types of mixture between different african, indigenous and european traditions. This not internet speculation, If you know and live these traditions it's very clear. No big deal either, the culture is alive and communities are taking care of ancestry and deities. The troubles the traditions face come from so many pressures from modern society, prejudice, christian fanatics and now misinformation from the internet and vulgarization of traditions.

Well, a good 15 to 20 percent of our Jamaican brethren came from Ghana. So is it any wonder that they maintained some of the words, proverbs and attitudes of the Akan? However they alone fought for their freedom so we can claim nothing. Only admire and honour them. The Abeyi- For, are the female priesthood. The Ideyefo are the male Priesthood. Obaa (Woman) is pronounced differently among our sister dialects. And what most brothers and sisters over in Jamaica call Obeah (Obayi) isn't actually that but a combination of different disciplines like Ifa or Voodoo. Basically any African religion/ritual is called "Obeah". Real Obayi, so called Akan Obeah, like Yoruba Ifa, or Ewe Voodoo is not really a practice anyone can do. It depends on your bloodline as you probably know. The real Akan Abayifor and Ideyefo in Jamaica you wil rarely see as they never talk. It's an ability assigned to us by Amen (Onyame) utilising the energy of RA (Onyankupong) carried in the blood. Tumi as we call it or Ase as the Yoruba call it is passed down generation to generation. In our case dating back to the time we once ruled Egypt and then beyond into forgotten history. The Armana (Amanoh) Family clan who created and ruled Egypt (Kemet), like Menes (Menu), Khuffu ( Khuffour/Akufu), Menkuare (Menka/ Amanquare), Seti (Sechi), Djedkare (Gyakari), Akhunaten (Akenten), TutMose (Tutu Mose), Tahakwa (Tarkwa), Tutankhamun (Tutu Ancoma), Kafre (Afre) and so on are who's names?. Does Nfefe still not mean beautiful. Does Titi not still mean here or right here?..So Nefertiti, (Beauty has come) is who's language?! The ancestors in the fields of peace (Asamando) Our Nananom Asamanfor, Or the Yoruba Egungun, or the Ewe Kuvito and so on are the ones who distribute this energy from the Astral plains. So if we or any of our Brothers and Sisters over in "Yard" or the W.I in general, who seek the wisdom of the ancestors and the correct Ancestral practice to follow be it Obayi, Ifa JuJu, Grigri, Wanga etc must create an Ancestral shrine and then call upon the Good ancestors ONLY to guide them. As we all have negative ancestors hanging around who were barred from returning to the Fields. I know Jamaican Obeah practitioners understand all about bad spirits. The Ancestors of Egypt are calling in this new age for us all to return to our authentic religion. And to discard to he Abrahamic idiocy deliberately designed to separate us from the Neteru aka Abosom, Orishas, Vodun, Etc. Sorry for preaching but the Ancestors wish to be heard. Me chyai mu. (I greet you).

@@smith6777 I think there's more than that friend...Mi si- (I said), Mi a ba - (Me a com), A hay ya (Ah' right here so), Byere Pun-(Puna/Fat Yam), Kumfa (Okomfo /Priest), Passa Passa (Basa Basa) Duppy- (Adompe), Nanny (Nana), Accompong - (Onyankupong/RA). There are many words and phrases used by maroons and the people of Jamaica still used in Ghana. The Akan proverbs, the stories of Anansi, Some of the ritual dances and drum patterns for calling in the Abosom/ Nature spirits, which followed them from Ghana, are still in use today. I had very close mates who were Maroons back in the 80s/90s and their attitude and mannerisms of speech are still very similar.
