Fun fact: Depending on the time and place, the Court Jesters would actually perform an important role in advising their liege. Since they had the official permission to cross boundaries they would be able to offer advice without paying attention to many social norms. They also had a much easier time interacting with regular subjects in places that a lot of nobility could not enter as freely so they were able to keep an ear on popular opinion. There's a bunch of other reasons but yeah - Court Jesters often had a far bigger role than just providing entertainment.

Following up, they also had a sort of diplomatic immunity so they could make fun of the ruling class as a sort of "this is how my people see me" or to point out absurd actions to keep the rulers grounded. If the clown suggests war, probably don't do it. If the clown calls you the backside of a horse, maybe you're taking the tax policy too far.

Court Jesters seem like they had absolute best jobs in medieval times. Roland the Farter, for instance, was given Hemingstone manor in Suffolk and 30 acres of land in return for his services as a jester for King Henry II. Each year he was obliged to perform a dance that consisted of "one jump and whistle and one fart" for the King's court at Christmas.

Fun fact, jesters often served to curb the idiocy and insanity of the rulers they served. Being the funny people, they had unique privileges to make fun of the rulers, cause that was their whole job.
