If the Patriots DON’T take a QB at No. 3, could they trade back and draft a tackle and WR? @PhilAPerry breaks it all down. Also, what does it take to have a successful offensive line in the NFL? We talk with former Patriots’ linemen Ross Tucker and Marshall Newhouse to get their opinions on what matters most.

You have the #3 pick in a deep QB class. Take the QB and plan for the future. Next year get the other pieces. Through the draft and FA. You don’t have a team unless you have a QB.

Not taking a QB at 3 is absolute insanity. You take the QB you like - Maye or Daniels - and then build around them to suit their skill set. Not the other way round. The offense is hugely different if you have Maye (traditional drop back gunslinger type), or Daniels (Lamar Jackson dual threat type).

Andrew Luck was supposed to be a generational "sure thing" QB. He certainly was a fabulous quarterback, no doubt. But look what happened to his career, as the Colts ignored the importance of having a strong OL to protect him. Look how bad the Pats have been with their crappy OL recently, especially the blubbery head-case, Trent Brown. Build the OL first! Go,Pats!

yup! they must have Joe Alt with first pick and continue taking offensive tackles until the 4th round regardless of any other talents that drop. they must stay focused and fix this problem once and for all.. and if Michael penix is available in RD 4. take him there. But drafting a QB with the top pick is like hiring a race car driver for a vehicle that hasn't been invented yet.

If I were in the position of the Patriots, I would trade the #3 for #11, #23, and a 1st in 2025. I would look at who is at who is available at #8 and potentially look to trade up from #11 if someone is dropping. I would genuinely consider Penix Jr. at #23 and probably a WR in round 2. Also remember that if four QBs go in the top 10, then at 11 you are assured of getting a top 7 non-QB from this draft.

Phil, I just ran several drafts using the PFF mock draft sim. Here are the results, at 11 - QB JJ McCarthey or T Olu Fashanu and at 23 WR Brain Thomas or T Tyler Guyton. There are several excellent Lineman picks and WR Adonai Mitchell is an option at 23. However if the Pats could get Drake Maye at 3 I might take him. His pro day change my mind. If at 3 it's JD, then I would trade down.

NE has had very good success drafting Offensive linemen early in drafts (rounds 1-2) over the past 25 years and none of those great picks below were top 10 picks. 1999 Damien Woody 1st (great pick) 2000 Adrian Klemm 2nd (Meh) 2001 Matt Light 2nd (great pick) 2005 Logan Mankins 1st (great pick) 2009 Sebastian Vollmer 2nd (great pick) 2011 Nate Solder 1st (great pick) 2018 Isaiah Wynn 1st (serviceable when not injured) 2022 Cole Strange 1st (TBD but has looked decent before injury) They had 18 straight seasons where they had a stud at left tackle in Matt Light or Nate Solder and after that one year where BB got Trent Brown to play like an All-Pro on the way to beating the Rams in the SB,its been nothing but lackluster play at that spot. you can't really build a complete Oline without checking off that position first. I'm not worried about their potential OL pick as much as I am about adding some good WRs. Count me in the group that wants to see that trade back with the Vikings for #11/#23/2025 1st and anything more is gravy. #11 would be one of the tackles in 1)Fashanu 2)Fautanu or 3)Fuaga who should all be there at that time. #23 its one of the top wideouts in 1)Brian Thomas Jr 2)Adonai Mitchell or 3)Xavier Legette depending on who is available. #34 I'd go with another Wr in 1)Keon Coleman 2)Ladd McConkey or 3)Troy Franklin depending on who is available. #68 would be back to the OL with on of these Guards in 1)Zak Zinter 2)Chistain Haynes or 3)Dominick Puni #103 I'd go either Wr or TE in 1)Luke McCaffrey 2)TE Cade Stover or 3)TE Ben Sinnott. If those five drafts picks turned into Fashanu/Mitchell/Coleman/Haynes/McCaffrey then no one would be worrying about htting on a OT & WR. Fashanu & Haynes would be our starting LT/LG tandem for the forseeable future or Haynes could slide over to RG when Strange heals up. Adonai Mitchell is 6-2/205lb and ran a 4.34/40. Keon Coleman is even bigger just not as fast. McCaffrey is also big & fast and could line up anywhere on the line. They could then grab a developmental QB with one of their later picks or go into the 2025 draft holding multiple 1sts to try finding your guy. Everyone is so against passing on the QB at 3 because of the unknown of who may be available in the draft or free agency if they waited but there WILL be more good young QBs in next years draft. Chances are NE will be picking in the top 10 again anyways so they should have another hgih draft pick to work with.

We get it. The draft is not an exact science. The Packers took Tony Bosellii number 2 in the draft back in the 80's. He was supposed to be a generational talent tackle, and he turned out to be a giant turd. We get David Andrews at center. He's not even drafted, and he turns out to be great for us. Yes, in a perfect world. We would trade back get the quarterback, the wide receiver, and the tackle we need. And then we'd be off and running, but we're going to have to sacrifice something along the way. Hopefully, if they trade back, they pick the right guys. If they don't trade back, then they pick the right guy.

The fact is there's no one-size-fits-all solution here when it comes to a decision between either taking a QB at 3 or trading down. It has to do with who's on the board at 3, whether the Pats believe in the QBs available to them, what offer(s) they're getting for that pick, their assessments of other players at target positions (e.g. OT, WR) that might be available later, and so on. Not a criticism since it's fun to talk about these different possibilities, but just saying that there are a lot of variables in play that might influence whatever decisions the Pats eventually make in the draft.

Phil please ask Tom this. If the Patriots build a team and then stick a QB in it. Are you not asking the QB to play to the teams talents and system? Isn't that the BB system? If you really want to develop a QB don't you build your team around the strengths of your future franchise QB? This draft is strong in receivers Phil your wrong their are excellent receivers in second we could get and O linemen in the third. Your forgetting the rookie class from last year they will be better from experience. This team is not in as bad of shape as people think. This is so dumb. “Surround your future QB with pieces so they can be successful” is so shortsighted. They have a draft every year. If you can’t hit on a game changing receiver or tackle this year, then do it next year. Burrow got Chase after his rookie season. Allen got Diggs a couple years in. Herbert walked into a talented roster and hasn’t won anything. If they think they have the guy, take the guy. Your odds of landing an impact WR or OT next year anywhere between 5-15 (which is likely where they’ll end up) is far greater than landing a QB.

almost all the nfl evidence suggests that you shouldn't draft a qb into a bad situation. What's also important is good coaching and being able to sit behind a veteran (most good qbs have done this). we don't know if the pats have good coaching. It's more shortsighted to draft a qb right now because you want to win so bad. There have been many good college prospects who don't perform well at the next level because of the situation they were brought into. just look at the 2021 qb class. I'm not even fully against taking a qb but you calling the idea of trading back "dumb" is incredibly ignorant

Let's save the razzle-dazzle for some time in the future when these guys have proven that they can field an offense that can score 20 plus points a game in today's NFL. If we do any razzle-dazzle, lets trade some defensive players to acquire offensive help. We saw last year what a top tier defense and a third world offense produces. I’m personally not as sold on Mr Curran, was it strange that he was two inches away from Coach Mayo’s right hand, Nooo. When you try to sell trading down, saving money and selling out the fans you get all of the benefits.

I think that if they do pick Maye, I think that he should sit behind Brissett and Zappe for the season and learn. The coaching should ignore the crowd and think of the way Mahomes was brought on.

Curran forgets that of all the holes he points to, he leaves out the biggest hole of all. Quarterback! Pick 3 is designed by god to fill that need, which makes Tom a Satanist, Phil!

I would trade the 3rd the 34th and a 1st next year to move up one spot to take Drake Maye!!! I truly believe he has what it takes to be the best QB in the league in the next 5 years and if that’s the case we should do everything possible to get him!!!!!!!

Why would we want a QB with a totally AWFUL roster? We literally have 5-7 players on the entire team that probably are secured starters. Anyone that thinks a QB is >> than 3-4 potential day 1 starters is watching too much ESPN and playing too much Madden. Patriots have to trade back to avoid another 3 years of Mac Jones 2.0. The only issue with trading back is = Who has what would be accepted? Vikings and AZ only teams with 2 1st Round Picks. Would NE do it for later picks and 2025 value? I don't know...but I know trading back will allow the Patriots to select the best player at almost any position if they wish. I know OT and WR are clear priorities, but a Bowers or Chop or Dejean or Verse? Why not? With how bad this squad is, it's almost impossible to screw up this draft. If they really want a QB, take him later. Nix is probably the most seasoned and there are plenty of guys available after the big 4. At least add to the entire squad...otherwise the kid is going to suck and get annihilated.

I disagree there’s no guarantee you’ll hit even on those lower picks. And now your drafting even lower with less chance of hitting. And if u draft defense that no offense is dumb to me. Because now you traded down just to have the same needs smh. No thx

IF WE GET DRAKE MAYE OR JAYDEN DANIELS MAKE SURE WE GOT 2 TALENTED WR, FASTEST RB, AND FASTEST TE. AND O-LINE. AND WILL BE OK.

Pick 11 could yield Rome Odunze (WR) or Olu Fashanu/Taliese Fuaga (OL) and pick 23 could yield Michael Penix (QB), Brian Thomas Jr/Adonai Mitchell/Keon Coleman (WR) or Troy Fataunu/JC Latham/Jackson Powers-Johnson (OL). I'd be completely happy with any combination of these players ASSUMING the yield on the trade includes a future 1st round pick.
