ok as a long time viewer of this channel, i feel like now would be a good time to say that, i love you bro. all of these electronics as far as old tvs and radios are WAY older than i am (born 1989) and your channel satisfies my curiosity for tubes and oldschool solid state tech. Long story short , thank you man.

Those film caps it looks like would really cause problems once the spring clips stop making good contact or got tarnished, etc... I like the new one you put in a lot better :)

I am seeing alot of ring cracks on a multitude of solder joints, Especially 2 of those 4 on the affected IF can has broken solder joints.

Love that executive LCR bridge. That oil's weird, if it were solvent based like contact cleaner, you'd think it would have evaporated to gum or nothing by now.

Nice to still have a parts store. My local Radio Shack closed but Digi Key is only about 150 miles from me so orders don't take as long to arrive.

LOL I thought I was the only one who did this with soldering. I found it removes all the solder with the suction tube just like you are doing.

Amen brother. You made me laugh about the $30,000 solder station. I know what you mean. The fresh solder on the pads is a trick that most don't know. I should send you a picture of my solder sucker. My local radio shack and by the way the only local parts for me. Our towns ecg sk nte dealer closed long ago. Anyway the radio shack did not have a manual solder sucker but had a heated one. I asked them to get me one and how much was it and she said $19.95 and I about fell over.

I have to re-visit the radio in my 1951 Zenith TV Radio and Cobramatic. I have the FM radio working but I am sure I have a problem in one IF. Could that liquid be a silicone oil? This is a fascinating video. Gary

You really need to get a 30K solder station ya know lol it's a lot like a musician in a way. A good musician can make an old beat up instrument sound awesome where as someone that's not that good needs something nice to get the almost same results. It's all in what ya know that says how far ya go with even the not so nice stuff. You do great work.

Could the oil be used to reduce the oxidation on the metal plates on the cap over time?

Is the liquid some kind of dilectric glupe gone bad? or just some overzealous repair - ATB

i wonder if that "wet" is some sort of electrolytic fluid

Shango, I picked up a Sony Trinitron KV-1916 from 1983 from the dump today, and it makes a transformer sound when I press the power button, but it does nothing after this. Any suggestions? It's a pretty cool TV so if it's an easy fix or a simple mistake I think it's worth it to fix.

Grand Negus I already got rid of it. I checked fuses and couldn't find anything wrong. I'm on the lookout for a slightly older TV now.

Hello, Won't the extra capacitance of the measurement leads affect the reading ? Why not leave the small adjustable capacitor in place? I enjoyed watching this video :) Thanks for sharing it with us!

+TechneMoira If I owned it I may leave them in place, not for a customer though

Those metal fingers in the can looked to be mechanically connected to the pins. Highly likely there was corrosion between them. The capacitor wafer was probably ok.

Great video and very informative. Just one question - what did this have to do with SMD?

Hi..I know this a bit off topic vut I was wondering if you could help me. I'm currently fixing a old ft-901 ham radio. I'm getting pretty much full powr on all bands but 40m. I figure it maybe something to do with the trimmer caps. I tested them with my lcr and they look ok. But my lcr only goes up to 100Khz and is not hi volts so they still could be bad. My question is I"m looking for some replacement trimmer caps and I'm having a hard time finding them. One is a single turn ceramic approx 5pf-70pf 50 volt the the other is a mica compression cap approx 4pf-50pf 500volt. Any ideas where I can find these and do you think it may be the trimmer caps? Thank you very much for your time.
@shango0668 жыл бұрын
+Doctor Forbin What is specific to the 40 meter band? Usually there are traps for each band on the output that filter off harmonics. If something was off in that trap it could be killing the power on that one band.
@Drforbin9418 жыл бұрын
+shango066 Thanks for your reply. I sniffed the output with my Spectrum Analyzer and there are no excess harmonics. Either way I need those trimmer caps. Any suggestions? I replaced tubes as well.

guilty admission... I've sprayed CRC 2-26 into slugs when I couldn't get them to budge/ fear stripping the slot out. I feared it might screw up properties. won't be doing that again.
