Jordan is the essence of patience. All his body language and actions are easy and show no fuss. All forgiving toward horse mistakes. He doesn't act to punish the fear that drives bad behavior.

Sometimes all a horse needs is time and patience, with no emotion from the person. Jordan demonstrated everything she needed in the trailer loading sequence. His timing, his response, his ability to wait on her...I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. He gave her just enough encouragement and forward energy with his cues and body language that she soon understood what he asked from her. Watching this reminded me of the three-hour trailer loading session I once had with my first horse. Long story short, that night I listened to Duke and not the impatient people around (long time horse owners) who kept telling me to push and wanted to use ropes to force him in. I ignored them, and patiently allowed his confidence to grow...and then it happened. He stopped backing out, he chose to stand quietly, and we went on our way. From that moment on, he loaded himself and never backed out until I asked him to. Time and patience, listening to and understanding what that horse needs in that moment does wonders. I love your channel and your approach with the horses. ☺

I love the gentle techniques of a true horseman. Using positive reinforcement and rewards for baby step progress. You allowed the mare to go at her own pace, get used to the task presented before her and rewarded her along the way. Once she was loaded, her ears weren't pinned back. She didn't look panicked. I love it!

She is a beauty. La Bella or Beauty for her name. She is a paint but Black Beauty was the first book I ever bought with my own money (1968) and it is still one of my favorite novels. You younger folks might not know that some of the first animal protection laws in Britain were passed because people learned about the abuse of cab horses at that time.

People get in too much of a hurry with horses. They expect them to understand and accept immediately. When results don't happen quickly, the human gets either impatient or scared. Then bad things happen. Horse people just need to learn to slow down and let the horse process. You might be able to force a horse into compliance but eventually that fear will show up again...and worse.

I wd have opened BOTH rear trailer doors, as its an enclosed space, and dark on the floor and dark halfway up the walls, so any horse does not see well in the dark, and being a prey animal, doesnt like small enclosed spaces, hence the hesitation/refusal to get in, its simply against their prey nature to go into a small, semi dark confined space. I wd also turn on ALL the interior lights, and cover the floor with very light sawdust so its not dark and the horse can easily SEE the floor; that wd help. I once saw a gal load a nervous horse very easily onto a trailer on the first try. she waited until dark, put the horse trailer in a dark area near the corral, (no lights in the corral); turned on all the lights INSIDE the trailer, put light colored sawdust on its floor, opened both rear doors, and because it was the ONLY well lit thing in a dark area, the horse just was led up to it and stepped into it immediately. was a real light bulb moment for me!
@c.l.sherman211 Жыл бұрын
I used pellets and a smidgen of sweet feed to entire my two-year-old APHA filly to think differently about the trailer. Her previous owners roped her, forced her into a trailer as a yearling, and scared her to death. Now she speeds up to get to the horse trailer, jumps in, and waits for me to get in next to her to tie her in. She always gets a small hand full of hay pellets for the right behavior. It works every time. She's using the thinking side of her brain.

Good strategy to make her uncomfortable when she moves to the side and relief when she’s faced to the entrance of the trailer. She’s probably gotten away with lots of bad behavior and needs to unlearn those habits under your guidance. She is a stunning mare and should come around in no time to make the right person a great companion.
