“One year is not a long time in the publishing world” that’s so true. My grandma doesn’t understand why I’m giving myself so much time to even just get out a draft for beta readers. And she doesn’t understand and I’m telling her that this is thousands of words and a very intricate process that involves a lot of time and in depth focus! 😂

Every book, no matter how polished, never reaches a state of absolute perfection ready for publication. I've come across numerous books from major publishing houses that still contained editing errors, plot gaps, or inconsistencies. The key is to determine a cutoff point where you consider the work complete and ready to be called finished.
@Peaslepuff
@Peaslepuff 9 ай бұрын
One piece of advice I've heard is to ask yourself, are you IMPROVING it or just CHANGING it? If the latter, it's time to stop editing.
@OlettaLiano

@@Peaslepuff Luckily, as a ghostwriter, I don't need to concern myself with refining and publishing. I craft the content as per my client's specifications, perform some minor adjustments and edits, and then forward it to their editor for the final polishing. The only drawback for me is managing continual deadlines and navigating legal non-disclosure agreements.

*QUESTIONS* #1. Am I truly proud of the story I've written and do I feel like this is my best work to date? #2. If I could give myself another year to work on this book, what would I do to improve it? #3. Have I received and implemented any feedback from beta readers? #4. Do I have any doubts about the story itself? (plot, characters, theme, etc.) #5. In the best case scenario, what is the longevity of this story? #6. What doors do I want to open for my author career?

I finished my manuscript, which I've been working on for years, about a week ago. I'm embarrassed to admit how long I've worked on this 95800-word novel (so I won't. But again, years). After watching this, I felt even better about my decision to send it off for final editing by a professional editor. So thanks for more confirmation, Abbie! I've never felt I could make a living at writing. So it's a work of love. But I would like to see how it goes. I have no illusions of grandeur here. Hey Abbie! Thank you so much for this video! I've been working on my book for six years, and I was having such doubts about whether or not it was ready to publish. A couple months ago, I was outright rejected by a publishing group, and it really made it hard for me to pick up the story again. After editing the story--mainly the ending--this list really confirmed what I had been feeling... my book is ready to publish! ... Now I just got to finish writing the ending! XD Thanks again for the video! Your Writer's Life Wednesdays videos have made such a huge impact on my writing! If writing a series, I would suggest having it all drafted before you publish the first book. So, you know how it ends and you don't wish you could go back and change things because of new ideas when writing latter. I don't think publishing your best stuff first is a good idea, because no one knows who you are. Publish only stuff you are proud of, but you may need to build and audience for your masterpiece.

I just discovered your channel and I love it. I have been writing for multiple years for various interactive apps both visual and text. I personally always felt the visual version was tougher because I felt like I wasn't allowed to have as much filler and really detailed moments just to keep it moving. I will say that your videos have given me some much needed positivity because I often find that my self criticism or fear of success has been somewhat of a hindrance. Not that I've ever received really much in negative feedback but whether I was even good enough to attempt publishing has always kept me from doing so. I did make a promise this year to change that and see your videos has been a positive support, clarifying that It is good enough. Anyways, thank you and sorry for this random long post.lol

Hey, just started watching your content a few days ago and like a lot of it so far! It is also comforting to know that you've written and published your own books, and that you're giving advice from results instead of the ivory tower of theory! So many youtubers do that, and I'm like "how do you know?" XD. I like to be very careful of who I take advice from, so that's one thing very important to me! I'd love to keep watching your content to learn because I'm really wanting to write my first novel! But I just wanted to see if you are also actively taking writing advice from someone with more results and experience than yourself, who also knows you and your personal work? I hope that question makes sense, just like I said, I'm very careful of who I take advice from and that's one question I always like to ask! Thank you in advance! :)

Question 2 reminded me of one of my other KZbin viewing interests... Airplane crashes. There is a special category of incidents where the pilots come in to land "hot and high" (too fast, and with too much altitude). And the advice is always the same. If you know it early on, ask air traffic control for an extra lap beside the airport to get to the right altitude and speed. And if you're on top of the runway, go around (rev the engines up, get up in the air and try again). If pilots have to take an extra lap or "go around" because they're not ready to land their airplane, we should feel a-okay to do the same with our novels!

Do you have a video on the issue of becoming "blind" for your story and written words? I see myself confronted with that on a regular basis. Its like painting a picture and after a while you stop seeing the colors. You still see that you painted a house or a road, but you stop seeing the colurs you used. Thats how I would describe it. And I would love to find out how to avoid that. I cant comb through all the mistakes and plotholes without reading it again and again until Im satisfied with it. But I kinda lose track.

Hi Abbie, you are a writing inspiration to me, I wanted to ask you a question related to some stories i want to write I'd be really grateful if you could help!😅 I have like 4 or 5 story ideas that are related to eachother in this way, they all involve characters going to a magical school, should I change or erase these ideas and make them different because of that similarity, or, since they all have different plot lines or worlds in general, I should just continue them? I dont want to bore my readers or be repetitive with the whole magical school/powers/worlds plot. Also most of my stories involve villians trying to take over a magical world or maybe this world and the MCS have to stop them, as long as the villians have different motives, its not too repetitive or forceful right?

Pro tip: read 1-star reviews of your favorite books, before and after you publish. Let yourself react: get mad, get frustrated, laugh, reflect. Get used to it before it's about you, because it will happen. And don't panic: people arguing about your book may be good for sales. 1. Some negative reviews make good points. I've never stopped liking a book that I already liked based on someone else's valid complaints, but I've reconsidered who I'll recommend it to based on whether I suspect that complaint would apply. 2. The importance of even the valid criticisms are often subjective. Christopher Moore's "You Suck" kills a minor character and then picked him up later. It was not a device, it was a full-blown continuity error which the editors should have caught. But people who love your book are going to root for it, the way people who love a sports team aren't going to stop being fans because the team makes a mistake. As a fan, I said, "whoops, that's embarrassing" and moved on. 3. Some readers are offended by works that do not validate their personal beliefs, or that have characters that don't look like themselves. This can be valid if the title/blurb/marketing are actively misleading, but it usually happens because the reader didn't bother to curate their own consumption. As a fan, sometimes I will go out of my way to vote "less helpful" on those reviews because they're literally not about the book. 4. Some reviewers clearly did not understand the story. Don't get me started.

What if I’m writing only past tense short stories to compile onto one larger book? It has taken over more than a year to write them, and my writing style has changed a lot since I started. What should I do to not have to rewrite my first few short stories?

How to name a character? Like it should sound good when I say it and it should also be meaningful and match their personality. It's my biggest dillema as all my story drafts exist with nameless characters

I’m not the best person to give advice on this, because I struggle with it, too, but what I do personally to avoid getting confused or stuck is just give my characters temporary “placeholder” names. Usually I use the names of plants, animals, or other naturally-occurring material things, such as Briar, Lynx, and Jasper. This way, I can move on with the story. I also tend to become a little bit too attached to my placeholder names. . .😂 not a good thing if you decide you don’t like them later on. But you can always brainstorm ways to change a name for a more appealing spelling but a similar sound, for instance, changing Crow to Chroanin. Hope this helps!😊

I think just picking a name that just sounds right for the character. I once did poetry, and it teaches you to think about the feel and sound of words, something I think is important in naming characters I think its worth bearing in mind what sort of character they when naming them. For instance, you may have a king, queen or princess character, you would likely be looking for a regal sounding name like Alexander, Richard or Elizabeth, compared to, say, a hillbilly farmer, who would probably be called Bill, Tod, Jessie or something like that

I think it’s best to make a story sheet, as I make, where you write a paragraph about what you want the story to be. it can be wordvomit, this does belong to you. then, I suggest shortening that and making an out line of the story in a three-act format, beginning, middle and end. Then work on the characters, world, lore, especially, etc. If you want help with characters just ask! I can help. Hope this helped you!

I hope that all of this hard work pays off. I'm worried that my beta readers arent critical enough since the only negative type feedback ive gotten is someone pointing out a point in the first couple of chapters with a very obvious cliche. When i said it was there on purpose they were happy about it and continued on. All ive gotten is it's good and interesting and it makes me so worried. It's weird to say 😅

I know this is random but… Could you do a video of a redemption arch I haven’t technically watched all her videos so I don’t know if she has any of those, and I don’t even know if Abby can see this. Long story short how can I write a appealing redemption arch (My character is an ass who struggles to fit in and prove his worth and he’s a big jerk, basically because everyone treats him as an outsider. He’s desperate to prove himself and he’s afraid he’ll be abandoned and alone. His goal is to be “the strongest/best” but of course nobody appreciates him cuz he’s an ass. He ends up acting out poorly and breaks a lot of rules, turning everybody against each and him. He’s a bitter and resentful hot head who ends up pushing others away [in the story it’s ultimately up to others to determine his hierarchy, which he can gain respect from, given he’s desperate to fit in and be the best] I don’t know how exactly to redeem his bad behavior •_•

No way is my answer! Might sound like a joke, but problem is I got this story in my head. I know most of it, but it is so hard to put it down on paper. It’s been like four years since I last wrote something. Why is it so hard to get wrote I can clearly see in my head, down on paper? I know that is a dumb question, but I had to ask.

I always worry about my work being too derivative. I don't want to end up being the Zack Snyder of authors, since he isn't a great writer at all, unfortunately (just look at Batman V Superman and Rebel Moon). My book i am working on is a grimdark retelling of The Lion King, but edgier (combining it with Warhammer 40K).
@Kailandra29

The Lion King itself is just a retelling of Hamlet. I don't think retellings are necessarily derivative, it just depends on how you implement it. Everyone loves "the same, but different."

@@Reealos Not really. You are allowed to borrow the basic plotline of a past works, if you make it new and different enough that it becomes it's own thing, which is what i am doing. Think of it as a launching pad to get your story off the ground My book is really closer to the original Shakespeare's Hamlet story, mixed with A Midsummer Night's Dream, also by Shakespeare The Lion King itself is a retelling of Hamlet, mixed with Kimba The White Lion, which was a Japanese anime from the 1960s and 70s I remember doing an entire thesis essay about this stuff in university
