Every book, no matter how polished, never reaches a state of absolute perfection ready for publication. I've come across numerous books from major publishing houses that still contained editing errors, plot gaps, or inconsistencies. The key is to determine a cutoff point where you consider the work complete and ready to be called finished.
@Peaslepuff9 ай бұрын
One piece of advice I've heard is to ask yourself, are you IMPROVING it or just CHANGING it? If the latter, it's time to stop editing.
@OlettaLiano9 ай бұрын
@@Peaslepuff Luckily, as a ghostwriter, I don't need to concern myself with refining and publishing. I craft the content as per my client's specifications, perform some minor adjustments and edits, and then forward it to their editor for the final polishing. The only drawback for me is managing continual deadlines and navigating legal non-disclosure agreements.

If writing a series, I would suggest having it all drafted before you publish the first book. So, you know how it ends and you don't wish you could go back and change things because of new ideas when writing latter. I don't think publishing your best stuff first is a good idea, because no one knows who you are. Publish only stuff you are proud of, but you may need to build and audience for your masterpiece.

Not that I've ever received really much in negative feedback but whether I was even good enough to attempt publishing has always kept me from doing so. Question 2 reminded me of one of my other KZbin viewing interests... Airplane crashes. There is a special category of incidents where the pilots come in to land "hot and high" (too fast, and with too much altitude). And the advice is always the same. If you know it early on, ask air traffic control for an extra lap beside the airport to get to the right altitude and speed. And if you're on top of the runway, go around (rev the engines up, get up in the air and try again). If pilots have to take an extra lap or "go around" because they're not ready to land their airplane, we should feel a-okay to do the same with our novels!

I dont want to bore my readers or be repetitive with the whole magical school/powers/worlds plot. Also most of my stories involve villians trying to take over a magical world or maybe this world and the MCS have to stop them, as long as the villians have different motives, its not too repetitive or forceful right?

Pro tip: read 1-star reviews of your favorite books, before and after you publish. Let yourself react: get mad, get frustrated, laugh, reflect. Get used to it before it's about you, because it will happen. And don't panic: people arguing about your book may be good for sales. 1. Some negative reviews make good points. I've never stopped liking a book that I already liked based on someone else's valid complaints, but I've reconsidered who I'll recommend it to based on whether I suspect that complaint would apply. 2. The importance of even the valid criticisms are often subjective. Christopher Moore's "You Suck" kills a minor character and then picked him up later. It was not a device, it was a full-blown continuity error which the editors should have caught. But people who love your book are going to root for it, the way people who love a sports team aren't going to stop being fans because the team makes a mistake. As a fan, I said, "whoops, that's embarrassing" and moved on. 3. Some readers are offended by works that do not validate their personal beliefs, or that have characters that don't look like themselves. This can be valid if the title/blurb/marketing are actively misleading, but it usually happens because the reader didn't bother to curate their own consumption. As a fan, sometimes I will go out of my way to vote "less helpful" on those reviews because they're literally not about the book. 4. Some reviewers clearly did not understand the story. Don't get me started.

How to name a character? Like it should sound good when I say it and it should also be meaningful and match their personality. It's my biggest dillema as all my story drafts exist with nameless characters
@Syd_LovesToDraw9 ай бұрын
I’m not the best person to give advice on this, because I struggle with it, too, but what I do personally to avoid getting confused or stuck is just give my characters temporary “placeholder” names. Usually I use the names of plants, animals, or other naturally-occurring material things, such as Briar, Lynx, and Jasper. This way, I can move on with the story. I also tend to become a little bit too attached to my placeholder names. . .😂 not a good thing if you decide you don’t like them later on. But you can always brainstorm ways to change a name for a more appealing spelling but a similar sound, for instance, changing Crow to Chroanin. Hope this helps!😊

I think just picking a name that just sounds right for the character. I once did poetry, and it teaches you to think about the feel and sound of words, something I think is important in naming characters I think its worth bearing in mind what sort of character they when naming them. For instance, you may have a king, queen or princess character, you would likely be looking for a regal sounding name like Alexander, Richard or Elizabeth, compared to, say, a hillbilly farmer, who would probably be called Bill, Tod, Jessie or something like that

I think it’s best to make a story sheet, as I make, where you write a paragraph about what you want the story to be. it can be wordvomit, this does belong to you. then, I suggest shortening that and making an out line of the story in a three-act format, beginning, middle and end. Then work on the characters, world, lore, especially, etc. If you want help with characters just ask! I can help. Hope this helped you!

Does anyone know of any editors on KZbin? I aspire to be an editor one day. Thank you! Also, your videos are so helpful, Abbie.

Well I’m not an editor but if you want someone to edit your book for you I would recommend searching in google. I got someone to edit my book for free.

I don’t know if I can ask this here, but how would you write sign language in a book? How would you represent it?😅

The one doubt I have is my side character somehow has the main character trait and it is reducing the importance of the actual MC. plus, I'm writing a fantasy novel. Please do answer my question. 😢

I hope that all of this hard work pays off. I'm worried that my beta readers arent critical enough since the only negative type feedback ive gotten is someone pointing out a point in the first couple of chapters with a very obvious cliche. When i said it was there on purpose they were happy about it and continued on. All ive gotten is it's good and interesting and it makes me so worried. It's weird to say 😅

Anyone got any tips for a dark epic fantasy book series with extremely deep lore I've already got the plot sort of figured out Also can I send you (Abbie) what I've done so far and if I can how do I?

I know this is random but… Could you do a video of a redemption arch I haven’t technically watched all her videos so I don’t know if she has any of those, and I don’t even know if Abby can see this. Long story short how can I write a appealing redemption arch (My character is an ass who struggles to fit in and prove his worth and he’s a big jerk, basically because everyone treats him as an outsider. He’s desperate to prove himself and he’s afraid he’ll be abandoned and alone. His goal is to be “the strongest/best” but of course nobody appreciates him cuz he’s an ass. He ends up acting out poorly and breaks a lot of rules, turning everybody against each and him. He’s a bitter and resentful hot head who ends up pushing others away [in the story it’s ultimately up to others to determine his hierarchy, which he can gain respect from, given he’s desperate to fit in and be the best] I don’t know how exactly to redeem his bad behavior •_•

No way is my answer! Might sound like a joke, but problem is I got this story in my head. I know most of it, but it is so hard to put it down on paper. It’s been like four years since I last wrote something. Why is it so hard to get wrote I can clearly see in my head, down on paper? I know that is a dumb question, but I had to ask.

How do you find "Trusted" beta readers? The so call paid "professional" beta readers I erngauged on Facebook used AI to create their reports, and the human beta readers remained clueless about what is in my book🤕.
@RichrobArtYT9 ай бұрын
I kind of like the whole beta reader thing. The problem though, is that I've written a children's book. If I give it to an adult reader, the feed back might be a little different than what my actual audience likes. What should I do?

I always worry about my work being too derivative. I don't want to end up being the Zack Snyder of authors, since he isn't a great writer at all, unfortunately (just look at Batman V Superman and Rebel Moon). My book i am working on is a grimdark retelling of The Lion King, but edgier (combining it with Warhammer 40K).
@Kailandra299 ай бұрын
The Lion King itself is just a retelling of Hamlet. I don't think retellings are necessarily derivative, it just depends on how you implement it. Everyone loves "the same, but different."

@@Reealos Not really. You are allowed to borrow the basic plotline of a past works, if you make it new and different enough that it becomes it's own thing, which is what i am doing. Think of it as a launching pad to get your story off the ground My book is really closer to the original Shakespeare's Hamlet story, mixed with A Midsummer Night's Dream, also by Shakespeare The Lion King itself is a retelling of Hamlet, mixed with Kimba The White Lion, which was a Japanese anime from the 1960s and 70s I remember doing an entire thesis essay about this stuff in university

Good advice for people who want their debut novel to be the best it can be. Terrible advice for 20 books to 50K. I say have courage. Your first book is never your best book. Take this advice with moderation and don't use it as an excuse

Technical point: when the vid displays the questions, the rapidly changing background hits like a strobe light. Not cool, very distracting, completely unnecessary (adds zero value). Please don't use again. Apart from that, love your content. ❤
