To put things in perspective, It's the difference in "ME, ME" attitude vs the WE TOGETHER attitude. In other word, it's to do with tolerance.

I don't understand why people having a PRIVATE conversation with their friends or family have to use a language which a nosey-parker sitting next to them can understand. There was video of a Spanish-speaker having a conversation with his mother on the phone in an international airport, and the American guy next to him got offended and started arguing with him.

Chinese are ALWAYS extremely helpful in helping you if you do not speak Chinese ...... KINDNESS and RESPECT is deeply inside their cultural DNA If they cannot speak English they use their cellphone's automatic translator to help you. I speak of personal experience over 20 years in China

This is the problem with foreigners. English is a commercial language of business and science borne out of dominance of colonialism. It is rumored that all China ambassadors invariably speaks the local language of the countries they are posted. When in Rome do as the Roman do. In China, speak Chinese for your own good and enjoyment. There must be millions of English speaking Chinese but that represents on,y a very small percentage out of a total of 1.3 billion. About 120 million tourists from China go overseas for holidays every year. They are not known to question why the countries they holiday in are not able to speak Chinese. High time foreign travelers to China straighten their mind set.

The French, the Italian , the Japanese are very proud of their national language. The younger Y and Z generation Chinese are learning the English language. Many young Chinese understand spoken English.

I have been in China for 20 years and can speak Mandarin to intermediate level. I should be a lot further along but I never had a teacher so have had to learn on my own using apps and videos. Never had any problems with people not understanding me. Some Chinese speak to me and many times I cannot understand them so they make phone calls to colleagues asking them if anyone can speak English and if not they have used their phone translation app to help me. I always use my translation apps if I cannot get a point across.

@@DreamEater-cb2cl the USA does not have an official language. It probably should, just for standardization purposes but still have the advantage of additional dialects and languages.

I feel this is bias. I assure you it’s easier to find any point of view in the US to feed any narrative because the US has freedom of speech. A lot of other countries could land you in trouble for showing negative aspects.

Regarding the Japanese reluctance to speak English, I feel that is largely due to their shyness and reserve. Many would love to, but are terrified they would mess it up.
