If You Could Read My Mind Sung by: Glen Campbell Written by: Gordon Lightfoot

If Gordon Ligthtfoot isn't given 1/10 the acclaim showered on (the Great) Jimmy Webb. I would put Lightfoot's songbook up against any contemporary songwriter of his generation. That includes recent Nobel Laureate and long time poser Bob Dylan. WHAT A WORLD! Kiss in the R & R Hall Of Fame and Bob Dylan with a Nobel Prize. This great unassuming and ever productive genius will, by and by get the credit he deserves.

Best male vocalist of all time. The purity of it ranks supreme in song after song after song that he sang. You can argue it only if your ears do not work.

Great ... but nobody does it like the Troubadour.... there's a definite feeling and spirit Gordon Lightfoot captured in that song.

This song is haunting. I've probably played Lightfoot's original as much as some Beatles' songs - and that's saying a lot. Every time I listen to it, I want a better outcome; that's why it haunts me. I had the supreme pleasure of seeing Gordon live a few years ago in St. Charles, IL. Buy Gordon live in Reno DVD! Sad, I never saw Glen, but thank God for youtube! What talents these guys are!

Glen when I was just a child I fell in love with you when you had The Glen Campbell show, and then when I was in my 20's I had an opportunity to see you live, with all of my four children at a Country Fest in Cali. It makes me feel so sad to imagine what you are going through, and your family. I hope when that day comes and you can spread your wings, you will know that millions of people loved you and your music. I hate getting old, I really do. Part of life nothing I can do about it. I'm not the same either, I had breast cancer, I'm ok, but lost something, like you. You lost your mind I think that has to be the worst thing ever..... I love you and always will cause you will ever be in my heart!

This is already one of my all-time favorite songs, but Glen turns it into sheer poetry, just as he does almost everything else he performs.

If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old-time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet You know that ghost is me And I will never be set free As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see If I could read your mind, love What a tale your thoughts could tell Just like a paperback novel The kind the drugstores sell When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail And you won't read that book again Because the ending's just too hard to take I'd walk away like a movie star Who gets burned in a three-way script Enter number two A movie queen to play the scene Of bringing all the good things out in me But for now love, let's be real I never thought I could act this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old-time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet But stories always end And if you read between the lines You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand The feelings that you lack I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back

Les grandes chansons ne peuvent être interprétées que par de grands artistes. C'est le cas maintenant.Magnifiquement orchestrée. Great songs must be performed by great artists. That is the case now. So well orchestrated.

Glens version is good but a little to fast. Gordon sings it with the feelings that inspired it and I think makes his original version stands out. Love both of them as artists Glen's Wichita lineman will always be the gold standard for that song.

Glen does a great job on this cover. I've been a follower of Gord Lightfoot for many years as well as Glen Campbell. My only comment is that the strings tend to be a bit powerful and overpower his voice at times.

The string arranger totally ripped off the original Gordon Lightfoot string arrangement. I'm an arranger myself. It's a cardinal rule . . .don't rip off other producers and arrangers.
