I've been playing this for decades and I just learned about a dozen subtleties I didn't have. Like the 7th in that f# rooted D chord. I always figured the turn around was an overdub. Guess I should have given Gorden more credit than that. And I'm glad you added that big C with the add 9 in the chorus. About that song. It's one of those songs where the very first time I heard it I knew it was going to be a huge hit and make him very very famous. The chorus perfectly expresses a universal feeling. "Never though I could feel this way and I have to say that I just don't get it." Then it drills into the heart. "I don't know where we went wrong.. but the feeling's gone.. and I just can't get it back". All of us have had that feeling in our gut at some point. That's how to get famous. Express a universal feeling in your art. I have to admit there are times when I play this and when I come to that second line I have trouble keeping my emotions in check. I've got Wichita lineman down sot hanks again Larry.

Excellent tutorial Larry !!! After watching several lessons on this classic song, yours stand out for 4 reasons. First you have shown the " turn around tricks ", 2nd you have included those embellishments on chords G and C which makes this accompaniment sounds as close to the recording as possible. 3rd, you stressed the importance of strumming through that C chord to project emotion on that particular segment of the song and lastly you have demonstrated how to end the song the right way. Great voice too !!! Don't let a few detractors stop you from sharing what you know. Thank you and God Bless.

Not only did you nail the way this song is played, your voice was spot on also. I had to leave the room when I started this video and as I was returning I would have sworn that you were playing with Gordon's vocals backing track! That wavering inflection in his singing is so distinctive and you had me fooled. Great job!!!

OK that was an excellent tutorial. Wanna point out one little thing though. When you were talking about the walk down from C (The part where it says I will never be set free). On the part where you play the B note on the a string and the D note on the beast strength you make reference to both of those strings being the fifth string. I knew what you meant and it was a good job playing but it was a little confusing right there. Other than that it was a really great tutorial and I enjoyed working with it thoroughly. I’ve been watching your videos for years and you are really talented. It was a really great tutorial man and I wasn’t trying to be negative but that was some feedback I thought I would throw in

Great work Larry, you are surely dedicated to your craft and are not afraid to step out of your comfort zone. One thing I tried was instead of striking the hammer on I would just maintain the pattern and hammer on as I strike the 4th string simultaneously, or slightly staggered sounds even better.

Great tutorial. I've watched it several times and pick up little details as I'm learing the song. Does anyone use their thumb on the E, A, D strings instead of how it is shown here. The only reason I ask is because I learned finger picking with the thumb plucking the top three strings and first three fingers on the bottom three. I know it works any number of ways, but I'm just curious.☺

Just came across this Larry, great lesson. thanks. I am glad I watched until the ending, cause' one has to know there is a 2nd guitar -- doing fills between most of the lyrics -- for it to sound correct. But I will work the main part Gordon plays and melody, and figure with a few hours practice, I might get it down, the hammer-ons and pull-offs are essential. Haughty lyrics Beautifully written, and love the back-ground strings on Gordons masterpiece. peace brother.
