God only "tests you" in the sense of watching where you're going to go. You are free to go as close to or as far away from God as you please. You are free to manifest disharmony, resistance, and suffering from the 3D stimuli of the moment, or you are free to manifest ascension, harmony, and peace from it. It's not a "test" so much like a challenge, but more of a passive "let's see what happens" test. I don't believe the 3D world is an 'illusion' or at least I don't like what that word implies, it's where I feel the Gnostic or New Age viewpoint can go very wrong and even satanic. It's important and real, so its not an illusion to dismiss, the rigidness and inability to change it is the illusion, it's more changeable and under your control than it seems, but it is real and valuable. Maybe that's what you meant, but I'd just like that to be made more clear. My point is, god's 'test' is more like observing an experiment than a punishing exam.

Everytime I hear your voice no matter the subject you make the situation appear less than ideal or hopeless sounding. We are being tested that's for sure. But it is not solely from us. The Universe is better equipped and tests us and we agreed with them to test us. It is not what we think it's what we feel that keeps appearing in our reality. It is difficult to feel good when you have little reference to imagine from, hence you keep getting what you are familiar with. I heard this statement a few weeks ago, "don't chase happiness because that is related to an outside event, thing or person. But connect with your inherent joy and don't let anyone take your joy away, it was never given by them in the first place, but a gift from God. " Joy is inside of us. We tend to connect it to a person, thing or event when we feel it, but the feeling is always inside of us, we can connect with it again if we look at it the correct way. That's why doing what you like is so important, to feel the innerjoy and very used to reinforce it while being by yourself as much as you can. Feelings are inside, so whatever you can do, to feel it, do that.. like watching comedy, stand up, listen to music, dance like nobody is watching, a hobby, take a walk in nature, swimming, taking a long shower, pamper yourself, cook a nice meal, eat what you love and make you feel good and energised. This frustration comes from trying to save the world. And if you focus on all the injustice of the world, you will see even more of it. It is best to sort out your personal life first. Then you can take on the burden of saving other if you want. I suggest to stabilize yourself first as we are no good to anyone if we are not good to ourselves. Meditation and conscious inner talking as a start. Then you can even move on to affirmations and imagination.
