I have the PD-91 and love it to bits. Build quality is amazing and it sounds wonderful. Not one dimensional, overly glassy or bright, as is often associated with digital. This thing has real depth, sounds analogue, detailed, robust and balanced to my ears. I have a great vinyl front end and still find music/cd's a delight via the PD-91 - I'll never move it on.

Pioneer made several better ones in Japan under the "T" series, like the PD-T07, PD-T07 limited, and the PD-T09 which the later is the best CD player they ever made and is far better (and much more expensive) then the PD-5000/PD-93.

Pioneer Elite was a much missued sub brand that covered a lot of models, some were just rebadged versions from their standard range. The trick as you have stated is to find the real gems. Only a small selection were available here in the UK, and were very expensive. i still use mine after owning a equal cd player the pd-7300 that in this year there was no pd-9300 ,only next year catalog ,the laser in germany cost in 2015, 400€ and in Portugal but to technicians not to the people cost 300€ ,with this money one could buy another high-end cd player from pioneer in 87 ,while cd players from sony(but i have to refer that when cd players were being released for the first year in Europe a friend of mine that his father went to work in Macau ,china that was still Portuguese in the 80´s he sent maybe the expensier cd player from sony at the time and it still works perfect today while other top end models bought in Europe didn´t even arrive to the 2000´s much more 2022 )till 92 were so bad that some even at the end of 8 months started to give problems while this model that came out in late 80´s still works today with heavy use and some laser tuning like it´s done to the heads of cassette deck´s azimuth, and this was the URUSHI version ,in this case it´s the american version wich they call ELITE but ELITE sells in the American countries not only high-end components but cheaper components that are only available there ,like multi-players that in Europe almost nobody buys them due to their inferior quality ,also in Europe only top-end components like this or the other components top-end model of each catalog are sold like URUSHI and doesn´t say ELITE anywhere also because high-end stuff doesn´t come full of letters they have a sober look, and there´s in other brands ELITE designation like in QUAD or other and the main diference is the colour of the display wich is yellow in America and silver(with reflex of blue in the liquid crystal characteres) in EUROPE, just compare them and you´ll notice what i try to describe here, but this is a incredible good cd player, i had the PD-73 when starting to assemble a URUSHI components system, next year when this model came out inside was just like the PD-73 but i ended up buying a more modern cd player but stilll this works perfect and one notices a better sound than in other brands cd players and still working all this years after without any type of failure due to it´s better quality of construction, pioneer cd players were maybe also develod by CEC like in the 90´s the turntables cd players from pioneer and CEC cd player being considered the best in the world at the time wich was belt driven,again i have to refer a coment i ´ve read in a known hi-fi magazine that said "...the most analog cd player" (because of the belt),all should work well but there are a few that pass to the hands of a children and they can destroy anything ,like a friend of mine that at the end of two years the cd player like this one didn´t play at all when one inserted the cd ,we took it to a german technician that lived in our town and two days after he phoned to us to go and get the cd player that was again in perfect condition and when asking the technician what was the problem ,he told us that was nothing related to the cd player it self but then he give us a litle plastic bag with 3 litle iron cars that were inside the cd player , his son used to open the drawer and with very çlitle space he inserted matchbox cars inside the cd player through the drawer wich we tried and was dificult but kids do understand more than us of litle cars inserted in litle holes, that happens all the time but inside a PD-93 was the first and only time i ever saw

@RUfromthe40s
@RUfromthe40s 2 жыл бұрын
@@SkyFiAudio URUSHI is what in Europe is ELITE but with only top end models of hi-fi components while ELITE wich uses also the URUSHI design sells several models of componets not only the top model of each component and saw a discution because of the two models ,one european and other American this talking about the 79 pioneer sa-9500 integrated amplifier that the europen one should have more powerfull sound not only because it uses 220-240 volts compared to the japanese version and American one that use 100 to 110 volts, but the thing is that the european model uses more power comsuption than the american one ,both have power transformers but one is 50 hz the european and 60 hz the American and it should make a diference, the Spanich guy who made the comparison couldn´t notice the diference because he was using some early 80´s HPM-1500 wich are very powerfull but to notice a diference in power one should use a less powerfull and more sensitive speaker, regards

@@SkyFiAudio I understand, maybe it would be better if they didn't put anything on the sides lol, oh well... but I believe the sound quality is fantastic, I say this because my main cd player is a Pioneer DV-868Avi and it has excellent sound quality in my Aura Va-100 Evo amp, but my dream " Buy Buy Buy" would really be the Grundig CD-9009, and from what my father once told me through a magazine he read many years ago and what I've researched and seen photos since then, it might be today one of the most collectable vintage CD players, a while ago i saw one for sale in the neighbor country of Spain, but 750€ is too much for a man who has a family lol. best regards.

A customer brought me a PD-93 a few weeks ago with the complaint of poor readability since another service center replaced the optical block. I was fairly certain of what I'd find: the previous tech didn't get the diffraction grating alignment correct, in fact it was between the wrong nulls. Setting that takes practice, I got it thirty years ago with those miserable Pioneer car CD head units. After the full alignment procedure, it played beautifully, though I did not find it preferable to my Sony CDP-102.

Pioineers were good but they had a VERY serious issue with their laser in that the laser lens would VERY commonly fall out. It really didn't matter if you got a budget CD player or a high end elite CD player, they all had this major issue that has caused most to not work anymore without major service (usually a replaced laser lens). I think this is one of the very few models to have a bottom mounted laser; I'd say 90% of Pioneer CD players had their laser mounted on the top. These are also ridiculously rare and you will almost never find these "out in the wild" and "for a good price". Most are found on ebay and other sites like that usually for "market price" often $1000 or more which is a lot more then I think anyone should spend on an older CD player from that era as the failure rate is quite high when you get to CD players that old (like what happened to my precious Pioneer Elite CLD-97 that went crazy a few months ago and I may never be able to fix due to it's weird complex problem).

I'm the last guy to throw cold water on Vintage High-End audio, but I want to offer an honest comment here. Yes, it has a great transport, and it is extremely well-made and great-looking. Period! The thing is, though, there's a HUGE difference between - " It sounds nice for Digital", and "Wow! This CD sounds like Music, not bits and samples!" My only point is NOT to say this CD Player sounds mediocre, but to simply make the point that there's no way that anyone with good ears couldn't hear all the progress we have made in CD technology between the date when this was designed, and May 2024. Was this CD Player one of the best when it came out? Surely. But a current NAD, Marantz, Arcam, or better yet, a used Sony ES CD Player would eat this Pioneer for lunch, sonically. Be smart with your Audiophile money people. Don't "listen" through Rose-colored glasses and live in the past like many do.

I was surprised to hear you say that you preferred true power buttons rather than standby. I've always heard, mainly from gear producers and sellers, that you should leave your gear in standby as it keeps it warmed up and that the jolt of electricity from powering it up does more harm than good. So which is better - to keep your gear in standby or powering it off and on after each use?

In addition early CD players used a single DA converter that led to an 11usec delay between channels and at a low sampling rate of 44Khz led to the "frying egg" sound. I know this machine well as the store in worked at in the 80-90s had this and the CTA9X as well as the rest of this awesome Elite line.

it´s far suoperior to the Sony but there´s also in the 90´s a even better cd player from Pioneer that still today also surprises me for it´s quality of sound wich in other brands expensive cd players it seems in music that have the sound filled ,like big orchestras when playing all instruments at the same time or like oasis second and third album that i notice the distorcion either than the guitars that were loud and at the time if recorded from the digital output even worse, at the time the analog output was much better sounding due to it´s good internal DAC

The amplifier that i´ve already seen it for sale on ebay, at the time i didn´t knew that only in Portugal and U.K they were sold with two power transformers and two big capaciteurs ,it weight more than 30 kg but the ones i see for sale are only with one power transformer and two smaller capaciteurs ,wich had a very good phono stage compared to other amplifier brands from the same year, i ended up selling everything and bought a pioneer system and today i´m using a mix of components from the 70´s, late 80´s and 90´s wich is my main system and have other 3 systems not so good in my house,icluding the garage where i have 6 old cars my second hobby either than hi-fi ,old cars that i bought because i liked them while growing up, regards

When I made the move from laserdisc to DVD, I ended up buying the Pioneer Elite DVL-91 combo player; it played DVDs and laserdiscs. The tray was very unique. The DVD tray was a separate piece but at the same time it was part of the larger laserdisc tray. If you hit the DVD eject button, only the DVD tray came out. If you hit the laserdisc eject button, both trays came out as one, large tray. Here, a picture is worth a thousand words: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYismqCphdeCiM0 It had the copper bottom like what you showed here. It even had a screensaver.

Solid rose wood would have cost as much as the rest of the unit. A solid wood would also is more likely to resonate. The linear supplies were really beefy. All my high-end players were Sony ES, glass epoxy boards. Never liked the use of phenolic boards on anything. I wish electronics would eliminate the electrolytic caps, a point of common failure.

i also have the turntable cd player PD-S804 that i bought in 93 or around it and it´s one of the best cd players i own, one notices a very good sound compared to other brands cd players at the time ,they used to say pulseflow then there was the direct link convertion or something similar but one can notice the improvement in sound quality and a litle more higher output sound, i remenber sony ES (esprit series/not elevated standart like some say ,that´s only written on the 1990 catalog from ES series) having a cd player very expensive that it had two modules the one that reads the cd and other where all the functions are and other that is similar to the CEC that one inserts the cd on top of the player casing and no display (because it´s also in other module) and some almost not seen keys to the basic functions(play,stop,pause and next or previous track wich costs a lot of money when new and today in second hand and more than 20 years of use ,they ask even more ,several thousands of €´s
