I was born in 1959...and I remember a childhood on Long Island, NY where you didn't lock your doors at night and you could leave your windows open. I remember playing with my friends all day and being out of the house (no cell phones, of course!) and not going home till dinnertime. Our parents didn't worry about our safety. Nobody worried about your safety back then. We built tree forts in the woods (yes, woods!) before suburban cookie-cutter houses took up every corner of the Island. As a teenager, we use to hitch- hike to the beach without worrying we were going to be assaulted or kidnapped....or worse. It was a time of innocence that sadly is gone forever. I'm glad I grew up in those days, because the world was a much better place then!

Everyone’s mom was your mom, everyone’s dad was your dad. Everyone looked out for each other, and people tended to share what little they had. The Wizard of Oz was televised once a year, and time stopped while every child was glued to the TV. The school gym was opened on Saturday for Dodgeball, and everyone showed up. You wore your school clothes to school and changed into play clothes when you got home. Boys were boys and girls were girls... there were no questions about that!

And sometimes sad...especially for those of us who were 60's kids and 70's teens and young adults. Those who meant so very much to us (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, childhood and high school friends and "loves") are sadly, no longer with us and are missed beyond measure. That, kids, is the absolute worst part of growing old(er) and the saddest aspect of the "reality" of "nostalgia".

The aluminum trees were made after WWII. The company is a short distance from me in Manitowoc, WI. Today they are still around and at Christmas have their windows with many aluminum trees in varied colors. My parents always got flocked trees. When they got too expensive we got a green artificial tree. We had a color wheel for our flocked trees. I can still smell it when it got hot running hours on end. I remember having a troll doll in the 60’s. When the Troll movie came out I got my grandkids each one. I always thought the hair color on the trolls was so crazy. Now, I drive down the street and see kids and people with the same hair colors. I wish I could teleport back to the 60’s and early 70’s.

I was born in 1963, and my first bike had a banana seat and swept-back handlebars. We took baseball cards and attached the cards to the front fork with clothes pins so that the cards flapped when the spokes hit them, which I think was an attempt to mimic a motorcycle. My first toy gun was a little rifle- styled toy that you fitted a cork to the end of the barrel, cocked the lever, and when you pulled the trigger, the cork popped out, but you didn’t lose the cork because it was attached with a string. Also, we had cap guns: imitation guns that you’d feed a long red strip of paper that had little pockets of gunpowder in it, so that pulling the trigger made the hammer come down on the gunpowder and make a pop. Also, we had small 45 (rpm, I think) records with a song on each side, and a big hole in the middle that you fitted with a red plastic piece that had a small hole in the center. Btw, (new edit), every year when I was a kid - and I think this extended into the ‘70s - one of the networks on our 12-channel TV played The Wizard of Oz once a year, and it was an event we always waited for and watched. Also, games we played were Cowboys versus Indians, and flashlight tag. Also, around 1968 and ‘69, when I was in kindergarten and first grade, we practiced Duck and Cover in the hallway of the school- getting in line against the wall, getting down on our knees, and going into a protective crouch.

Same here...born in '57. We always had a real Christmas tree. They were usually between 5-8 dollars. One year we went to pick out the tree and they had raised the price to 10 dollars. Dad had a "fit" but we got it anyway. And he was always "in charge" of the tinsel distribution on those trees, which consisted of at least two boxes. When I was in first grade (1968), the teacher, a woman if average build, took us out to demonstrate a Superball...I guess she hadn't tried it before. She slammed it down, and it just kept bouncing, and we all went after it ( small class, maybe 15 students). My Mom had one of those wearable hair dryers. Bonnet dryers were a royal pain growing up. What’s funny about the Sound of Music is that, while it’s a great movie, it was promoted as a true story, and there is almost nothing true in it. The family actually hated the movie about them. Here are just some of the things not true- The number of kids The ages of the kids The names of the kids The fact that Maria was actually the mother of some, but in the movie she isn’t. The father being stern and not showing emotion. Maria not being stern. They left on a train on a musical tour and just didn’t come back. They weren’t being chased by Nazis, they didn’t sneak out in the middle of the night, and they didn’t climb over a mountain lol. A bunch of other things as well. In fact, except for the names of the parents, the entire movie is made up. Still a great movie though.
