Jack Boyle changed my life. I want to share among friends on this chat, that at one point in my life I had lost 124 thousand dollars in a IRA. It was traumatic. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep and I couldn’t forgive myself. It took me months of healing and a great relationship with my wife to finally even beginning talking about it. During that period I picked up Jack Bogles many many books, and admitted to myself that I was overly leveraged to single-stock risk and at the time owned no etf, not even the VOO. Years later - I made back the loss of 124 k and now have grown the portfolio far and beyond my dreams with the steps and disciplines Jack Bogle teaches. Just curious, but is this return people speak of based on the rising of prices or some type of dividend? The dividend on S&P500 ETFs have very low yields and often drop 30% in recessions (which takes years and years to gain back). I know it's a combination of both, but what is the main source of gains over time? Price-change? or dividend?

That's a good question which I don't have a good answer to. What I can tell you though is that the fraction of the growth from dividends has been trending down over time in the US because the US tax code advantages growth from the stock price and has done so since, I believe, the 1980s.

When taxes and fees are factored in there is no better choice than a market index for any extended period (say 10 years or more). The best analogy I can give you is the following: I am telling you BEFORE a 15 horse race starts which horse is guaranteed to finish 2nd. If one is foolish enough to say "I will ignore that advice as I think I can pick the winner" than so be it. You can make a hell of a lot of money knowing which horse finishes 2nd.

Is there a difference between holding an S&P 500 ETF vs non ETF?
@stefang20144 жыл бұрын
Not really. An ETF can be easily bought/sold during market hours as (the name suggests) they're actively traded. Whereas with an index it can be bought/sold once at market close - that'll be the final and only price until next session market close. So, an ETF will have price fluctuations throughout the day. But careful when picking ETF's in and within specific sectors or securities as liquidity may be an issue. But for tracking a major index like the S&P not really a concern.

Buying an S&P 500 index fund and holding it for 20 years is very effective, but pretty boring, so many people tend to start meddling with their investments. Technically it is possible that stagnation could occur. Great strategy, just hold and keep buying!
@morriselee6 жыл бұрын
You only know this by looking the hindside. You will never know when you are in the turmoil. Just keep buying and average up or down through the course, which is the way to go. If you think you can time the market and buy low and sell high, good luck! But most likely you are delusional......
@johnny35836 жыл бұрын
Even if you were dollar cost averaging on a monthly basis, it would have still taken you 15 years to break even during the great depression and 10 years during the tech bubble and the 2008 financial crises. It's not a problem if this happens during your early investment years while you're young and still have a lot of time left (though it might discourage you when you see your portfolio loosing 50-60% of it's value). The problem is if this happens during your last investment years, just before you were planning to retire. You'd have to work another 10-15 years just to be able to retire comfortably (if this happens when you're 65, you'd be 75 or 80 just to break even). If you are still planning to dollar cost average, your best bet is investing on an annual basis, it gives much better returns than investing every month, has smaller drawdowns and much faster recovery to break even (3-5 years in worst cases).
@GeorgieGuy16 жыл бұрын
Dollar cost average into equities and dollar cost average out on the glide path to retirement. We don’t change a portfolio all at once during either the accumulation or withdrawal stages of our lives. Take the depression and other catastrophic examples and average them in with all the other points on the continuum of history of the markets when we might have entered the market. We can’t predict ahead of time what the markets will do. Critics of Mr. Bogle’s approach are often brokers who earn by their clients stock-picking and buying/selling frequently.

Its called dollar cost averaging, and I guarantee that you will lose gains trying to time the market. Go long, buy when others are fearful and things are on sale! Pure and simple

Aloha State of Mind Problem is you'd have to be out of your mind to buy and hold the markets at this point in the cycle. If there's any upside remaining, it's not worth the risk. The vast majority of analysts and economists believe a major crash is coming (and it 100% is), so why on earth would it make sense to buy right now??? Why not lock in gains, sell, then buy once the crash is over?

I bought Baba on sale before the market opened today and I will buy other stocks in the near and long term future when they are not overvalued. Act when people are fearful, sounds like you got some fear going on. Tune out the analysts and economists and focus on investing fundamentals. Also self direct invest if you aren't already, don't lose hundreds of thousands over time paying financial advisor fee's.
