Thank you for everything you put on KZbin. Most people charge money for what you are sharing for free. It's ridiculous that you don't have over a million subs!

Your videos always get me excited to practice guitar. Not noodle around or playing comfortable songs, but really get into learning new techniques, fixing weak points, and pushing myself to improve. Thanks for everything you do!

3:33 I'm probably an outlier in this context, but for those 3-note-per-string whole steps I use fingers 1-3-4. It feels more natural and I'm no doctor but I suspect it has something to do with a motorcycle accident I was in years ago that really did a number on my fretting hand wrist and playing with fingers 1-2-4 makes my entire hand trembly and weak. I guess my point is for anyone to try them both and see how they feel. Great lesson as always man cheers!

I'm with you on this. I use 1-2-4 on 95% of the neck, but there are a few spots that actually hurt, and feel unnatural due to the anatomy of my wrist, I guess. Playing 1-2-4 on those spots makes my fingers feel tight and tense, using 1-3-4 feels much better, so I'd encourage anybody with a similar problem to give it a go

I also use my pinky, so 1-2-4 or 1-3-4 fingerings.

For years the camera guys have always filmed the picking head not the fretting hand... I can only think that to the average person this looks more exciting because their are often bigger movements with the picking hand, especially with rhythm playing.....

Very good thank you kind sir. And finally somebody explained the thing about this finger stretching that I've never heard anybody say and I always wondered if I was doing it wrong cuz like 579 I do one two four but then up higher I need to do one three four wow thank you

Younger players don’t seem to know about muting with the fretting hand. This seems to be true on guitar as well as bass. Then you see silly workarounds like wrapping a scrunchie around the first fret. I’ve been playing 54 years, and everyone seemed to know how to mute unused strings when I started playing. Also, as someone who plays bass as well as guitar, I always use my pinky. It’s common on bass to use 1-2-4 fingerings. I can’t play lead without my pinky. Which kind of sucks since I’m getting a little arthritis in it. I can’t practice slow to play fast. I think it’s because when you play fast you move your fingers differently.

I’m a student of Mike’s, he teaches about this, you should be moving your fingers EXACTLY the same slow as fast. “Slow” practice should be called “Slow motion “ practice, as if you video recorded your self and are playing it back in slow mo.

The speed and technicality of guitar playing today is far more advanced than what it was 50 years ago. Still cleanliness and muting are important but there's stuff being written today on guitar that if you want to replicate it cleanly then you better be using some kind of string muting device other than just your hands because that was likely what was used in the studio to get it to sound so clean to begin with. Especially on extended range guitars like 7, 8 and 9-strings that are used today. You don't have enough fingers to cover all the strings to use traditional string muting methods and mute everything all the time so you're kind of forced to get more creative with your methods to reduce unwanted string noise. It's not a workaround, it's a near requirement for an 8-string guitar and above. When extended range guitars started to get more popular that's really when the use of hairbands and tape and all that began to come into play.

Hey so i don't know if you will see it or not but lately i have hit a wall, i just can't improve further. Its like my picking technique isnt keeping up with my fingers and they arent synced properly. Its frustrating and irritating and does anyone have any suggestions?
@Escrublet

Go back to basics. Just play something really simple and go through all the basic foundations of your technique and see if you are actually doing them. Are you actually fretting directly above the fret? Are you using your wrist for single strings and forarm to move between strings? Are your shoulders tensed up? Is your pick as close to the strings as possible and moving as little as possible between notes? If not, why? Basically just dont keep running the same routine hoping it will change. Your problem m isnt known yet and doing that wont find it out. You need to find what is tangible and then change it with simple intentions. If things are not clear then take it simpler. It took me years to just go back to simple chords and realise i was doing a million things wrong. Ultimately the thing inbetween you and perfect playing is a list of very simple things that you will punch yourself for not seeing and feeling. The right technique also always 'feels' right. You can grow this muscle of what feels right the when you become more aware of your body and guitar and take it to basics. Relaxing your body so you feel loose but resourced also always improves all aspects of playing.

Find the tempo with which you can play patterns and scales comfortably with hands in sync, getting every note sounding clear. No matter how slow it may be. That's the starting point. Be patient and consistent every day and you will get better! Guitar is about improving a little bit every day for months and years

If you've never had lessons, I'd suggest you have a few. You don't have to commit to lessons longterm, but a lesson a week for 2 or 3 months (or even less if you want) will help you immensely. A good teacher will get you on track, and give you goals to aim for.

Let me solve the mystery for you - the videos are pointed at the picking hand because those videos are analyzing the picking technique of the player. Duh. Of course "playing fast" involves both hands, but those videos dig deeper into just what the picking hand is doing. You're welcome.

Anyone have advice on how to play/tighten up gallops? These sylosis riffs are murdering me. i can pull a lot of them off but i am inconsistent, unsure of how much tension and where to apply it. I just need some help with what my right hand should be doing or maybe some kind of mental trick that helps, idk.
