It's not fantasy and I don't know if you have read it or not, but Red Rising Saga by Piece Brown is basically SF-Stormlight. It has all the best ingredients that make a Stormlight book shine, but they are much faster paced books, shorter and are told in first person, single POV. The first book is only good, but everything after is absolutely astounding

I thought the criticism that Eye of the World received was exaggerated and unnecessary. I loved it but loved book 2 a lot more. The reason why book one had that LOTR familiarity to it was because it was intentional( RJ wanted the readers to feel at home) and it was due to business reasons as well. I hope that makes sense for anyone reading this comment

I would reccomend Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings for people who are into Rothfuss, Martin, LeGuin, Kay, etc. But it scratched my Stormlight itch in terms of epicness, scale, completion, hidden/forgotten history, cool magic system(s) that are revealed slowly and built upon, deep, deep lore, and characterization. I'd add in The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I'll try to keep this to things that are mentioned in the prologue. Aeons ago, the world was one. But after a long and grueling magical war between the Patryns and the Sartans, the Sartans Sundered the world into four. A world a fire, a world of air, a world of earth, and a world of water. Plus one. The Labyrinth. A prison for the for the Patryns, meant to humble them. Now some have made it out of the Labyrinth, and the Lord of Nexus is sending Haplo, a young and loyal Patryn through the Death Gate, to prepare for the worlds for the return of the Patryns. The magic systems are also a bit Sandersonesque. There are multiple pages explaining the magic systems at the end of each book, and they are explained in a very sciency way. If you understand what, for example, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and Probability Wave Functions are, you'll likely get a bit more out of the magic systems. I'll add that the first book was published in 1990. So don't go expecting some modern fantasy. Weis and Hickman were sort of finding their way out of the 80s style Fantasy with these books. Clearly written in the 90s, before being influenced by Tad Williams and GRRM.

I've recently started reading Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga, and while it starts out feeling like generic epic fantasy, but as we explore the other world, it starts to feel very alien on a societal scale, yet the individual characters all have very human motivations. The main hurdle I've faced is there are many perspective jumps and huge time jumps. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the first book, and ten years have passed, and it's been 5+ years since any of the three main perspective characters have seen each other.
@tilted_skirm3 жыл бұрын
I love this series, I got introduced to it via the companion series that feist wrote with janny wurts which takes on the view from the other side of the rift, so when I later read the first books I had a very interesting perspective knowing a lot about the culture on the other side already ... it was honestly a great way to read it

Raymond not Robert. But I love The Riftwar Saga and in my my opinion The Empire Trilogy is a sublime piece of political fantasy. Man, I love that series. I'm still halfway through the Riftwar Cycle (15 books in, I'm at book 1 of the Serpentwar Saga now) and now I'm wondering why I didn't think of this when I started recommending stuff to Jay Andreas, I agree. Without The Empire Trilogy it's quite hard to grasp the political anything on that planet. Even with those books it's still very complex. Completely worth it though. I thought there was a timeline inconsistency between that one and the Riftwar Saga though. Something to do with when Pug (my god, that name though) flees back to his home planet.

Ok so there is Memory Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams, which I know you have read the first book. Of course it isn’t really like Stormlight when it comes to character and the over the top setting and so on but it is really epic when it comes to the world builiding, there are some reveals throughout the series that make the world seem quite alien and there are actually also some similarities betwenn both series (Sanderson has said himself that it was influential for him). The *Epicness* of the setting and the characters gets bigger the more you progess, especially when you reach the sequels.

I'm a bit late, but I've got some thoughts for books you might enjoy based on what you said in the video. They're not entirely like Stormlight, but like you said, what is? For characters and generational feuds I'd say: go for The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. The magic system is pretty neat, it also almost feels like a video game and the characters have very complex dynamics, both inside and outside the family. And the island it's set on has some political complexities with the rest of the world. I'd also say, for the hidden history thing you like, you can try the Daevabad trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty. Or The Ballad of Sir Benfro by J. D. Oswald (which comes closest to an actual epic in this list) it also has that quest vibe to it and I like the spin on the prophecy trope in it. Not that it flips the trope on its head, it's a pretty classic fantasy, with a lot of dragon stuff, but I just really like the way it prophecy is integrated. If you like full on RPG like books (with some nice comedy where you can feel the D&D shine through) I'd say try The Misadventurers - an Almost Epic Tale by Steven Partridge. I don't know if I'd call any of those truly an epic, but I'll recommend them anyway. Have fun reading :)

As always, I recommend A Pattern of Shadow & Light by Melissa McPhail if you want something similar to Sanderson but a little different. Has a ton of great characters, lots of political intrigue, a great world, history and really interesting magic system. And cycles of Galand Shadow of a conqueror (By Shad Brooks of shadiversity) A pattern of Shadow and Light series If you haven't read any of those that should keep you busy for a while. On one hand I like the malizan series, but on the other there are just too many characters and not enough singular storyline to care about them. Codex Alera is a hidden gem. It really holds its own besides Dresden. It's been 15 years since I've read the series and it was one of my first forays into the genre, but I have fond memories of The Banned And The Banished series by James Clemens. I think now people would consider them trope-y or whatever, but 17-years old me didn't give a * back then and I could care even less now. This series had it all; an evil overlord, a (female) chosen one who has to learn to master her newfound powers, an epic quest, travel and at the end of every book an evil boss-type creature to defeat. And now I have to go and reread them!

I have heard mixed reviews on malazan. I despise books like Dune that just swamp you with information and big in universe terms off the jump and expect you to be hooked. Sanderson and Robert Jordan did a fantastic job of snaking the lore into regular interactions to keep you hooked and going. Does malazan (from the best of your memory) just throw you in with big "in verse" terms and expect you to understand? Also is the power system (both supernatural powers and governmental dynamic) engaging?

May be more of a personal opinion, but I find the detail of both the world and the characters in the Gentlemen Bastard Sequence to be comparable to Stormlight. Scott Lynch does an incredible job constructing a compelling setting and making you really care for the characters. There is typically only one narrator, but Lynch also uses time-skipping from the present to the past to offer more information on the characters. One of my personal favourites! If only he could publish the fourth book!!!

I recently bought Tigana at a used bookstore, haven't read it yet though! I've heard a lot of good things about it, so I'll probably read it sometime soon

@@CapturedInWords I just started “A Song for Arbonne” by GGK. Loved all three so far, especially the Atmosphere ( I and “A Critical Dragon” joked that GGK writes like a Ivy League Professor describing his Mediterranean Culture Holiday, compared to his fellow Canadian Steven Erikson writes as an archeologist who along with his best friend Esslemont is stuck wet and dirty in a jungle, playing with D&D and Firecrackers to not get bored out of their mind back in their tent). Almost a shame that they are oneshot books (though to be fair, with some overlapping themes and features), and I find it hard to choose a favorite, as both are A+ books for me, but with different strengths, as mentioned. So would be very interested to hear your take of either of them! PS: Heard about your evacuation, hope the fires burns out soon and that everything goes well with you, your people and home!

Read Revelation Space. It's reminds me of Stormlight because of worldbuilding, and because at least the first book has Sanderlanche. I'm in the middle of the second one right now, and it fixed a lot of issues of the first (mainly pacing), and frankly, I could use a company on Byzans 😅

My recommendation is always The Magician and the rift war saga from Raymond E. Feist. Similar to storm light archive in the sense of invading armies coming from another region, teleporting etc. Also it follows royal families and their descendants trying there hardest to save their kingdoms and peoples. It also has under dog and heroes journey tropes but done with classic styles of a D&D campaign which I loved and still do to this day. Definitely give it a shot. Sadly people never give it a review these days and its a classic greater imo than Dragon Bone chair by Tad Williams which I also like too. I also recommend the Sky Fall series by shannon Messenger its YA but it follows the story of Vane and Audra who are basically wind elemental beings able to interact with natures breezes, gales and gust from the north, south, east and west. Each have different temperaments based on where they hail from, but one such child is lost and being hunted. He needs protection until he can take on his true destiny in life! Give it a shot you might just like it. Plus Vane is almost as under dog and going through similar things to Kaladin. It also has light hearted but also dark moments like Storm Light. Oh I just realised both really have a focus on storms and the winds etc.

I actually just bought the first Malazan book, so I'm excited to start that journey after I finish RoW! I have read the first three WoT books and I want to jump back into that, but Malazan has me so intrigued right now 😂
@ladrac1983 жыл бұрын
Malazan throws you in the middle of a lake where WoK throws you in the deep end of a pool. I'm in book 4 right now and still don't fully understand what's going on. But the writing is AMAZING and it's epic fantasy to the highest degree

Incredible series but book one is hard work. Very worth it but it takes a bit of commitment. The glossary is your friend!

Cradle is the dopest books on the planet, not quite the same level of writing as BS, but the progression, concepts, action, and pace are better than stormlight.

The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon could be a series that readers of Stormlight might like because of the magic system. I'm only a few chapters into The Way of Kings, so I could be wrong.

Going on a 1970's deep dive right now and reading the multiple Hugo winning father of magic systems Cyrus Vance. The dying earth series had some funny and original stories and originated many magical and magic tropes and rules authors use today. Then hitting two of Moorcock's series and Zelazny's princes of amber series. Read Fritz Lieber and Le Guin years ago.

I usually recommend Bennet's Foundryside for those, who like Sanderson. It has a hard magic system, there is deep history that is not fully known in the world, and both action and humour are kinda Sando reminiscentto me. Also, SA anime - yes please. This is how I visualise everything in the books

Codex alera is literally a spite book butcher wrote coz someone challenged him to write a book mixing the lost Roman legion with Pokémon. The best rec for stormlight fans is imho Green bone saga. Great magic system, complex multi dimensional characters. Or even his dark materials

So, I didn't know that Jim Butcher wrote "Codex Alera" as a combination of Pokemon and the lost Roman Legion, until I watched your video. I have read the series 5 times now, and I am ashamed to say I didn't even register the mountain in the Caulderon Valley as "Garados" for the longest time... But it's so far out of context!

I feel like I've already read the stuff that is truly Sanderson-esque (Wheel of Time, Lightbringer). It seems like the rest are just recommendations of "good books", and not truly Sanderson-esque. I say this hoping someone can prove me wrong. I didn't read the others mentioned, but quick research into the basics is not pulling me in.

Dragonbone Chair was tough to get through even after the first 150 pages of slogging world building. Bad rec.

Agreed. All the raving about his prose but it is the same 200 pages 10 times and a horrible ending flowed by 50 pages of 'oops I forgot these bits' info dump. Otherland a little better but same issues and nonsensical ending.

Honestly it gets really good the more the series progresses especially when you read the sequels as well. But I can understand that it’s not for everyone. For me it is a Masterpiece!
