Not trying to excuse their behavior, it was awful, and they might have attacked him without being provoked at times, but they didn't hate him for no reason or just because he was friends with Lily, and Snape did curse at least James at times too, at least according to Sirius and Remus.

As punishment, Harry received permanent House Arrest and was locked in a small storage room under the stairs. Snape was not jealous of Potter James, he had not forgotten that as a young student at school he was bullied by James. So he was mad at him for that.
