I was recently faced with a similar situation. Buy a 6k as a second camera to go with my 4K, or buy an ursa mini pro g2. I decided on the ursa for several reasons. It’s heavier, and has a better look if you want to shoot handheld style stuff. The high frame rate, because I wanted a 120fps that cuts well with base frame rate stuff, and wasn’t happy with the crop version on pocket 4K. Built in nds, better xlrs, and last but not least that extra dynamic range!! I may have saved some money if had gone with another pocket, but I figured it was smarter to get another camera that could do different things well, than a second camera that does the same things well and poorly, for the times I need two cams rolling. I get much more use out of the g2 and pocket combo than I would out of two pockets. After shooting the two in identical conditions I definitely think most people have underplayed the differences in image quality. My ursa footage looks much cleaner and punchier at the same time.... unless There isn’t enough light for the sensor. You’re one of the first people I’ve seen who feels similarly as I do that the dynamic range is easily noticeable and not insignificant.

I believe both the pockets are great but if you started with the 6K then your second camera should definitely be the ursa g2

Dude i like your videos but this is just you happy to be sent a G2. I have a rigged up P6k and its 100% not a side chick to the G2. REAL benefits of the G2 are HFR and15 stops dynamic rage (didn't notice ANY dynamic rage difference in your samples by the way). Benefits of the 6K is it can be COMPACT or Rigged to a G2 size, its really good at low light and its 6K, easy to mount on ANY gimbal. Audio on the Pocket cameras is BETTER than OK. People are so SPOILT these days, they look for MINOR things to HATE on equipments. I shot a feature film on a 5d3 Magic lantern that screened at TIFF and was on NETFLIX for 3 years (and it was EASY to use). P4K/6K is 100% more than enough for anything you want to do.

hi, love your video man, can i ask your advice since i'm at the crossroad at the moment and looking for guidance a little bit. right now i'm conflicted between Canon EOS C70 and Ursa Mini Pro G2 at the moment. I had Bmpcc 4k and i also use canon for photography so i had a bunch of ef lens. I'm still in my twenties, and somehow it feels like i had to choose between to girlfriend to marry too. I also just watch your video about choosing A7s3 than C70. which make me thinking, should i go for Ursa Mini Pro G2 or A7s3 as my main camera? becausue A7s3 offer such a great value.... tight body, no overheating, and cheaper...

Can't agree with this take. It completely depends on what kind of work you do, not whether it's your livelihood or not. And for most the Ursa should stay a rental. Real estate, events, interviews, products, social media, local commercials. All the common freelance jobs that need 4k60 or less, the Ursa offers little practical benefits over the 4k. Dynamic range makes us happy as artists, but clients are unlikely to care. Ursa is a great camera, but for the 90% of us who don't routinely need more than 4k60 it's not a sound investment. That extra $4000 would be better spent on marketing and lighting. If you do tons of super slow-mo, or really really need the dynamic range, then obviously get the Ursa. Otherwise it's a rental for special projects.

I owned the original ursa v2,the ursa mini 4k,the ursa mini pro and after the ursa G2...Now i have also 2 BMPCC 6K and the only difference i noticed was the sensor...I believe the Ursas have 1.4x Crop where the BMPCC 6K has 1.558 (lets say 1.6)... About the audio is irrelevant,i'm using the Zoom H6 or F6...I don't believe is a good idea to record audio internally,i rock my H6 on my rig,has 2 backups so it's impossible to lose audio. The low light and DR won't matter if you know the basics of exposure etc. I will always prefer the BMPCC 6K because it's balancing also on my gimbals, even in the Ronin S using the cage and the ssd... That's a win... ] The internal ND's is the best part of the G2

Good video with lots of great points. I personally own a pocket 4k and have a Canon C200 and URSA Mini 4.6k at work. For me, the Pocket 4k/6k is the perfect travel/interview camera. If I'm a one man band or have a very small crew, the Pocket is my go to camera. Its great for indoor work where you have limited lights and modifiers. For any outdoor work or moving subject stuff, the C200 is my go to. No one has the auto focus system down like Canon's Dual Pixel auto focus. I've seen it do things that the best 1st AC's I've known couldn't do in moving subject situations. That is unfortunately the main downfall of the Blackmagic cameras, their auto focus system is trash. For big crewed projects, I personally prefer the C200 as well. It's still light enough to fly on a Ronin S (stripped down with a light prime) and has the amazing low-light of the Pocket. I personally don't love the URSA Mini Pro at 1600 ISO in low light conditions. Since the price of the URSA Mini Pro and Canon C200 are about the same, it's hard to ignore all the benefits of the C200. That might change at NAB this year if Blackmagic can bring the low light capabilities of the Pocket to the URSA Mini Pro along with a better focus system. Anyway, that's just my two cents as a fellow filmmaker. Keep up the good work!

Uh, yeah, I've always wanted a side chick, and wouldn't mind a new main chick, but I have to apologize to you, Ty, you're not my idea of a good side chick. ;) All kidding aside, I'd buy the URSA solely based on what you said here. But cash flow is a bit tight. My main is a Canon 80D, and I can get beautiful video out of it. But now I've decided...I'm going to save up for the URSA. What about a video comparison of Canon DSLR vs. URSA, or even the ENG-style Sony F5? I've heard the Sony is a beast as well. Not that I can afford either URSA or Sony. But would still be an interesting video to see side-by-side comparisons in different lighting situations, ungraded and graded.

@@FlashFilmAcademy The camera I'm talking about - F5 - is different than the Fs5. The F5 is more like a TV broadcast-style, shoulder-mounted camera. I believe it's much more expensive than the URSA. But I'm still betting the URSA would compete w/ it in terms of picture quality.

BMPCC 4k or 6k is a camera for even hobbyists to own. For commercial work the Ursa is great, and you can always rent exactly you need if cameras you own aren't right for the job. Good show!

a question i have about the idea of future proof. this is starting from 0 here. invest in the canon line mirrorless line R or RP, their adapters and using older EF lens 2nd hand, added this allows a path to go up to the blackmagic 6k that use the same EF mount. does this make sense?? (the blackmagic 6k would be bought much later with more experience and maybe at a cheaper cost when blackmagic release another new video camera) im just taking long term 5 years here.

I'm not into side chicks, either. But, I completely agree with you. I own the BMPCC4K, and I love it. Lately, I was thinking that the Ursa Mini Pro G2 would be my next camera. I shot a feature film with the GH5 last year. Later I sold it for the BMPCC4K. The director of the feature film and I are sitting down to come up with our next film. I'd be happy if my pay as DP was the Ursa Mini Pro G2. I'd accept that. :D

@@FlashFilmAcademy I did. awesome shot. But is that the 300 FPS or the 120? Looked like 120. I have the 4K and the 6K and am truly contemplating getting the G2 just for the slow mo. *I shoot a lot of action sports. And the 300 FPS in particular is very compelling.
