Oh my gosh this explains so much! My friend who had immigrated to Canada from India shortly before I met her was almost always half an hour to an hour and a half late to everything, and she would never apologize for it. Which I found odd because she was normally such a conscientious, responsible person who would never inconvenience someone on purpose. It's good to know that the difference is just due to culture! I ended up telling her a different time to arrive (generally an hour earlier) so she'd usually be on time 😂

Also what this guy means is that most behaviours are learnt and not necessarily based on morals or ill will. It's all relative. In terms of rent, there is no ambiguity. Also since, you gave them 2 months, it's almost your fault for letting them have 2 months of no consequences to their rent. You've just added on another experience where they learn to pay rent 2 months after due date before they get kicked out. You may say this is compassionate but, it's better for them to learn as oppose to you virtue signalling. Of course there's no problem with doing what's best for yourself, but then you can't be annoyed when someone also does what's best for themselves, which is getting 2 months rent credit for free.

In France it's 50/50, half of the people will show up early and then the others gradually come in. In my family we have the "30 minutes of politeness", meaning that when someone gives you a time to come you try to show up between 15 minutes before the time and 15 minutes past the time. That way the host can be ready to receive and you have a bit of extra time if there's a problem on the road!

@Ekitchi0
@Ekitchi0 Жыл бұрын
For me as a french, 5min is about the limit I find acceptable to make someone wait for me. I don’t believe it to be about how one perceives time, they still manage to travel and get their planes and be on time when they really want to. It’s It about how much effort is seen as normal to avoid making someone wait for you. In some cultures the waiting around for someone is not a big deal or unavoidable so not much effort is put in to avoid it. At the same time, the efforts required may be much higher because if transportation is not reliable you need a lot of padding (e.i. waisting your own time) to be on time. If everyone would need 1 hour of padding to make sure they are on time, the group would be waisting as much time trying to be on time as not trying.

When you're in a specific locality, you should generally just understand and adhere to the customs. If you're in a place that likes punctuality, then be on time, if you're in a place where timing is more flexible, then go with it. I’ve always viewed it as this: If it’s for Business, Medical, or stuff as important, be there either 10 Minutes early or on time. If your meeting with friends to do something, like going to a park, movies, etc, it’s okay to be at MOST 10 minutes late. If your going to a party or gathering with a lot of people and your not involved with setting up, come like 30-45 minutes late, gives the people more time to set up just in case, and no one will care your late since it’s a party. That’s how I am, except my time is very different. I go by a 30 minute rule. Show up 30 minutes early or expect someone to be 30 minutes late. It’s more because 8 months of the year is a frozen hell scape where I live and no one plows the goddamn roads here. On a normal drive to the next town over, assuming the road is either packed down ice or actually a road, it’ll be a 20 minute drive. That can quickly change if it snows, some of the ice melts or it’s extra slick that day.

As an american, I can attest that punctuality is very important. Started when I got my first job, every single clock I own is 5-15 minutes earlier than the actual time (aside from phone and laptop). Punctuality is crucial to make a good impression and shows respect for the other party, especially with meetings. I had a very good impression when I asked my wife out on our first date. She arrived 5 minutes early with a date plan. We spent the day following her activities and ended with a dinner reservation I had made. I asked her for the time after the dinner and she looked at her analog watch (5 minutes ahead). Effort, trust, and respect are the only things that matter in a relationship. Knew she was someone I could spend my life with. Punctuality was a plus! "She's a good hearted woman in love with a good timin' man" - Good Hearted Woman

And in the mean time, learn to just be with yourself and have fun on your own, and you'll never be upset about someone being late ever again. Because the root of your anxiety is that you feel you are wasting your time waiting for them. But you can only waste your time if you have nothing to fill it with. See what I'm getting at? If you can't fill your time on your own, then maybe you don't like yourself very much and you can't enjoy your own company, and deep down you don't think of yourself as being likeable, and you need other people to validate you. And when they fail to reassure you that they do in fact like you, you just get upset. Practice mindfulness and letting go. It's a good start to getting to like yourself more.

@@Tralvan If you have a meeting with your boss or something in a higher position, you'd should be ~2 minutes early. This gives the impression that you value their time, but also that you're busy yourself. If you're like 10 minutes early, it gives the impression you got nothing to do. And coming exactly on time means you're bad at managing your time, and you're lucky you've made it on time (which is supposed to be the start of the meeting and not the time of your arrival) In military basic training (Austria, Europe), you'll also hear the saying "5 Minuten vor der Zeit, ist des Soldaten Pünktlichkeit", which is translated to "5 minutes before the time, is the soldiers punctuality. This has always been a very interesting cultural aspect. As a dutchman, the maximum amount of time to be late is like 5 minutes or so for most people, just guessing. I try really hard to understand why it is normal in other cultures to be late, but cannot get it😅
@Avx829
@Avx829 Жыл бұрын
It's not normal to be late, they are only late from your perspective. In their culture they are still on time, their arrival falls within their cultures norms. For example you say the max time to be late is 5 mins but in their culture it could be 1 hour and still not be considered rude.
@gwagner1380
@gwagner1380 Жыл бұрын
@@Avx829yeah pretty much this. For example me as both German and Mexican thats has been an issue among our families. Because here in Mexico being late is not a thing really. A lot of stuff can happen between you leaving home and you getting to your destination so even then people know things will start later. Like for example you can be early to a psrty but there won't be a party because even the host won't be ready because we all know people will start coming to the party arount the 30 minutes mark sometimes even past the hour mark. Of course that means that parties also never end on time and unless you are paying a rent for using a space, most parties or meeting will go overtime and in some case it can even kinda evolve. Like we start in one place but then continue by moving to other place in order to party with the people that just came in. Sure being late to a date is a topic for debate because that varies from individual to individual but overall even of professional meeting it is expected that things won't start on time. Now try to explain that to Germans who are always on time as in that culture being too early or too late, heck even being close to the appointed time can bee seen as rude. They are always sharp to the hour and minutes accorded. For them they thought that my Mexican family was incredibly rude and we had some issues that needed a lot of time to get used to it because as said on the other comment, the perception of time is different. For Germans free time is valuable and anything you use or do in that time should be respected because for them not being on time is seen as "this guy or lass doesn't take it seriously that I deprived myself of "X" quantity of time to spend by doing other stuff". Thats a really stark cultural difference as time and the usage of it is seen with two different points of view so time is really relative based on where you are and who you are with. Sure as the saying says, when in rome do as the romans do so if you are in a country that values time, try to be always on point and in the opposite situation alway try to be more flexible else you will have lots of headaches and arguments in your future.

I never understood being ok with being late. Like being unapologetic about it irks me. Especially not doing anything about it to fix it. Whenever I'm in a new place I always check out the public transit to see approximately how early/late it will get me anywhere or if it's on time. Then I'll test it out if it's consistent, and if it is, then I'll take the bus/train before the one I was supposed to take regardless in case anything happens. If it's not consistent then I'll take 2 buses/trains early. Of course I'm not just wasting my money, I'm multitasking by testing it on my way to the grocery store or somewhere I'm not meeting other people, so that when it comes to actually having to meet people, I'm not late.

I remember saying sorry I am so late, and his response was along the lines of "That's ok, I knew you were going to be late, you always are". That moment, when I was basically so consistently always late, that my friend just planned with it, THAT was my wake-up call to change... Because that is not allright.

@@Aaron-hh8nx ok Aaron, the entire world isn’t the same culture as the UK or America. In a lot of other cultures being early is rude but in a different comment section you told the person to just be early despite them saying it’s rude in their culture. I come from a place where RSVP isn’t even a thing because to expect someone to clear their schedules ahead of time for your event is also considered rude. Americans will pride themselves on confirming ahead of time and showing up early but most of the time they won’t bring gifts to the host, which it’s also rude to not bring the host gifts in my country by the way. So in my people’s eyes the Americans are doing everything wrong when it comes to invitations but I understand that from the other’s perspective it’s the complete opposite. It’s just the cultures people grow up in. Which happens to have a lot to do with where you’re from.

My german grandma was so keen on being punctual, she waited up to half an hour in her car to be able to be there the exact moment she was supposed to.

I know some of these people who are always late. Somehow they are on time for work or any other meeting that involves them directly. But when meeting with friends or family they arrive late.

The difference is the consequences. Being late to work will get you fired eventually. Friends/family are much more forgiving. Some will let you be late your whole life.
