I did send you a message about this a few weeks ago.. I found a fix for this issue on my two Pro 16 phones. If you shoot a 5X or 0.5X image first and THEN shoot a 1X image I am not seeing the issue. But after I shoot 1X photo my 2nd photo at 1X will see the issue again. But if I shoot a 0.5X or 5X photo again and switch back the 1X I don't see the issue. I think it is a build up of energy in the backlight sensor.

Thanks for all your hard work investigating this issue. I’ve used iPhone since way back. I have the 15 Pro Max. I do a bit of photography including aurora and astro. My wife has a Samsung. I don’t know how to drive a Samsung, but the features iPhone DON’T have that are standard on the Samsung was the FIRST time I’d ever considered changing. Hearing the issues and appalling service regarding this issue is making me strongly consider not purchasing an iPhone ever again. A faulty product is one thing. Shafting your customers is an entirely different matter and I’m disgusted with Apple, but not surprised. That’s again Shayne for all your effort and sharing your findings with the wider community.

My iPhone 15 pro max does this also - but only with 30s exposure. Very noticeable blue and red haze. Same pattern everytime, like a painting... But with 10 second exposure, NONE AT ALL. Considering the 30 second is just 10 seconds stacked x3, it's very interesting.
@connor_campbell82817 күн бұрын
I just got my iphone 16 Pro Max coming from a pixel 6 and I absolutely love it. I was nervous to test the camera with the 30 second exposure as I love astrophotography. I tested it with 10 sec and 30 sec exposure with ISO 6400 and I have no blue lines at all which I am so thankful for. I don't know if this would make any difference but I just bought the new stock/ second batch of the 16 pro max? Also my friend has the problem on his 15 pro max with red lines instead. I noticed you had the red lines on your 15 pro max in an older video Shayne so has this issue been happening not just on the 16 but older models too?

@andywash17 күн бұрын
It is clear there are issues for some people, & others think they have the issue because there is not a consistent testing method & light leakage can make the blue lines. What is needed is a systematic way of testing. A clear step by step approach that can show the same results each time. Or show that the issue changes during testing. A way of testing without light getting in. If anyone gets the blue marks in the same place every time then there are post processing methods that could be created to reduce that blueness. Not ideal, but we process them anyway. Have you found the results move around your test images or are they consistent? Advising everyone, whether or not they have the issue to return their phones is rather extreme. If, after testing appropriately & consistently someone's phone clearly has the issue, then fine advise them to replace it. But as you say this does not impact us all.
@Marynicole83017 күн бұрын
The request to return the phone is because of the “f u’ apple gave to anyone with this issue. Not all problems that happen in life come with clear ways to test for them. Reality isn’t that neat. I’m sure some way could be thought up but instead of working on it apple made is clear they don’t care. They don’t want the headache. I was about to buy the 16 pro but I probably won’t now. The night mode photography was a huge draw on top of the fact we are in the apple ecosystem already. I’m just going to stick with my bare bones SE. If there is a chance I can’t take good photos even if I spend 1k I’ll save the 1k and keep what I have.

I have a 15 Pro Max (late 2023 build) and it also has blue lines but they are usually not as obvious as what has been shown here. They are in a consistent location but only show up in very dark photos, becoming more obvious when the images are adjusted. They are not visible in most of my astro images, only some. So this isn't a new problem, it just seems to be worse in the 16

I don’t have the problem. I got my 16 Pro Max from Spectrum Mobile in the US. It was manufactured in China in July. I took my phone into my small guest bathroom, put it on the sink counter, closed the door, put a towel along the base of the door to block all outside light, turned off the light and took a 30 second exposure image. I was concerned the light from the phone itself might leak into the picture because it seemed like a lot of light and the phone doesn't sit perfectly flat because of the lens protrusion. Also, I have it in the Apple clear case. Despite the possible light contanmination, the photo came out pitch black, not even the slightest hint of ANYTHING but solid pitch black. I've taken some nice astrophotos with it already, including some good shots of our recent comet. I just took a picture of a pine tree in my backyard at 25X zoom that we know should be crap, but it looks spectacular. I can even see tiny cracks within individual pieces of bark. The tree was about 50ft away. That's just a guess as I sit here on my computer. It was somewhere in the 40 to 60ft range. At any rate, I was surprised to see this amount of clarity and detail from 25X zoom. I certainly didn't have it with my iPhone 12 Pro Max at max zoom, whatever that zoom amount was, I don't remember because I seldom used it. I've shot a number of test shots with this iPhone 16 Pro Max, and while it can't compete with a decent camera, it's an improvement over the iPhone 12 Pro Max and pefectly capable of taking great photos under most conditions. I don't think much of its astrophotography potential because I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and I majored in astronomy and astrophysics in college. We imaged with large telescopes. I own large telescopes (by amateur standards). Astrophotography demands much more sophisticated equipment than a smartphone with the physical limitations of its tiny lenses. Have you taken a picture of the Moon or planets with a smartphone, any brand? They ALL suck. lol

Only a couple of weeks ago I took some spectacular pics of the comet Atlas, Wowed myself and friends and family. Figured it was time to move up to the 16… Anyway, I've been to the Apple Store there's only two in our city. Everybody claimed there that no one heard of it before… Did an erase because the tech thought it might be software… Showed her it wasn't the case. They don't want to replace the phone right away. She says that perhaps it'll be a bug fix in one of the updates and I said if that's the case, they're just going to be turning down the sensitivity to get around the problem. Shayne, thank you so much for bringing this up, otherwise I would’ve noticed it when it would’ve been already too late. I had 2 16 Pro Max phones and both were affected. I had to drive to the next Apple Store multiple times now, each drive taking around 2 hours. Since I was within the 14 day return window, they opted for an replacement which then could’ve only get returned to the store locally again, no option to send it back to save me from driving 4 hours. I didn’t want to continue playing their quality control lottery, so I finally decided to return both phones and get my money back. Also they stated that I was the first customer in this store who complained about this issue ( I guess because most people either don’t do low light photography or can’t even notice this ). I’m keeping my 13 Pro Max which still gets the job done honestly. But still, I’m super frustrated about Apple. This is absolutely unacceptable for a phone this expensive.

I will say this, I’m not going to return my iPhone 16 Pro, I don’t do much low light photography and in the shots that I have taken with my iPhone 16 Pro, I’m very happy. With that said, my 16 Pro does have this issue, I tested it out after your last video, and I’m not happy about that. I don’t take the kinds of shots that you do, where I live is constantly covered by clouds so I don’t think I’ll ever miss those features, but when you’re paying £1000 for a phone, you expect that everything in that phone will be perfect, and the camera module in my phone isn’t. I’m not the type of person who sells their phones on, I keep them or give them away, so I’m not worried about the resale value, but for others, that’s definitely going to be a concern. I can see this phone being less valuable long term than a 15 Pro due to its cameras. Pretty shitty of Apple to just wash their hands of this and pretend it’s not an issue.
@NWtoSFO17 күн бұрын
I appreciate you taking up this issue. I’ve read plenty of the negative comments regarding you harping on a niche issue affecting a very low percentage of iPhone users. There are lots of niche areas of photography that iPhone owners engage in, so to dismiss a complaint as an over-reaction over a form of photography you think is irrelevant is very immature. Besides, the previous models of iPhone were really good and kept getting better, so why wouldn’t the 16 Pro continue that trend. It appears as it came to a shocking end and Apple is at a loss as to why it happened. Their backpedaling is what’s most disturbing here, and that’s something to which all iPhone users ought to be paying attention.
@Marynicole83017 күн бұрын
The more niche an issue is the more people SHOULD harp on it. Just because an issue affects a few people, if the product was advertised to be able to do something it should do that thing and people who spend a bit more for a phone so they can do something they enjoy with it (not everyone can buy a phone and then also a camera so having a phone that can produce decent photos is great) should get the same attention as any other issue with a phone. What I think happened is they started getting a lot of returns and investigated the cause of the issue and found it was something major in manufacturing. Something that is hard or expensive to change and affects a ton of phones so if the problem caught main stream attention, they would have to immediately fix the cause and replace a lot of phones as people tested their phones and found they had an issue they didn’t notice before. So they are saying it’s in spec while hopefully slowly changing what they need to change to fix the issue for the next generation of phones. or maybe not. There is a common issue with their laptops that went unfixed for multiple generations that caused their motherboards to self destruct due to putting the power connection for the screen right next to the one for the CPU when they are supposed to be as far apart as possible. If a microscopic piece of debris gets in there it shorts out. Either way this needs more attention. Tech reviewers are the people that need to hear about this. It’s a close circle of creators and article writers and they talk a lot.

So that's the kind of test I ran a few weeks ago and thought my iPhone 16 pro was good. Then because of this video, I decided to test again... and I guess there was a little light leaking through the towel, and what should be some sort of gradient in the photo was banded with blue vertical lines. So, I am concerned about trying to do astrophotography with it and seeing these bands, but I'll have to test that next. I would also suggest testing between doing a regular 30s long exposure and a 30s proraw max photo. Seeing it through a range of ISOs as well.

It’s not just with Astro photography that causing anger with Apple. I had issues with the 15 Pro Max I had with the image quality so much so that I had it checked out and diagnosed… but nothing came up to say it was faulty. Now, I have the 16 Pro, and I’m having the self same issues again. Low light, the images were poor especially with the 120mm camera. It needed good light before images were okay. With the 13 Pro max I had before these, the images were extremely good but… I’m tempted to buy a Sony Xperia instead. Very disappointed with Apple and the iPhones 🏴

Here is something interesting. My wife’s 16 pro doesn’t have the issue and all factors the same except the file size is 490 kb. My 16 pro max has a file size of 2 mb. Both show the same exposure, iso, mm, etc just 2 different file sizes. Weird. I’m curious to know the file size of those who have I and those that don’t. It seems that if it shoots a larger file size it’s an issue on my phone. Ultra wide seems good but the fusion camera is the issue. (Ten minutes later) Just tested with Reeheld long exposure camera on AppStore and no issues and th file size was 326 kb all same settings except it stored as jpeg. Using stock app it still has an issue even when changed to most compatible (jpeg).

I honestly don’t think there is an issue. I tested both the iPhone 16 Pro Max (new) and my previous iPhone 14 Pro Max placing them camera down a towel in a completely dark room. I got the same results with both phones - no “blue bands” or “blue streaks”. If you’re that upset about the damned issue, why don’t you take just a tiny bit of that ad revenue you’re pulling in from whining about the problem, sell your “faulty” iPhone 16, and get a new one. You’re getting way too much mileage out of this non-problem, which none of the Apple websites are reporting - because it isn’t an issue.
@ShayneMostyn12 күн бұрын
You obviously haven’t listened too well. Not all iPhones have the issue. Yours clearly doesn’t have the issue. Read the comments. Loads of people do. Maybe just consider yourself lucky and move on. Why would I buy another one? It’s just a lottery at this stage if you get a good one or not. Thanks so much for your very helpful comment.

I returned my 16 Pro. For many reasons. There's just waaay too many issues with this phone. Besides the camera issues, and lack of innovation when it comes to their post-processing (Pixel phones are miles ahead now). The last drop for me was when I started to notice how buggy and stuttery iOS 18 still is. Even on the newest devices. Bugs that have been present for several YEARS now! It just reeks of laziness from Apple.

Of course it is a fault - otherwise every single iphone 16 would show this fault! And it has a Night & Astro Mode so by definition it is intended for this purpose. There are still new iphone 15pro's available on Amazon but I am concerned that the AI they are adding in December might mess them up & it will be outside the 14 days etc. So, no iphone for me. Bother. But it is way too expensive to take a risk with. Thank you for raising this internationally for us all to be aware.

Apple should be reminded is that Premium isn’t about a price, it’s about reputation based on capability. A high end product by price needs to justify itself by performance based results be that technical in the output or by means of service. Apple should be more interested in getting to the bottom of this than a the customer, poor form. If GoPro can do a better job how about a video featuring the Iphone 16 pro vs GoPro and title it GoPro vs NoPro?

I resisted following the trend and decided to keep my iPhone 15 Pro Max for a while. I skipped the upgrade since the iPhone 16 still doesn’t offer high-resolution modes on all three cameras. That said, I did make a photography-related upgrade for landscape shots on the go-by adding a new (well, technically old) smartphone to my lineup: the Google Pixel 8 Pro.
