Over the last year I've become prepper fit. April 2022 I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, had a kidney function of 59, was obese, and had high cholesterol. Today I am at a normal BMI after losing 62#'s, my kidney function jumped to 84, my blood sugar is normal and my cholesterol is normal. I also have 90 percent less pain and a WHOLE lot more energy. I was only 38 at that appointment. Felt like I was already on the road to death. I figured that was my life from then on out. But it wasn't. Meanwhile, the whole time I was prepping. I'm healthier now than I likely was even as a Navy sailor (back then I was chronically sleep deprived and stressed). When in bootcamp (to get ready for military service) we work on EVERYTHING. While we are training physically we are also learning about our new life and job to come. You all need to be in bootcamp mode perpetually....training physically and mentally. Don't slack off like I did. If you don't use it you lose it...mentally and physically. Don't sit on the couch while watching prepping youtube videos and testing out your high carb prepper foods all day! Get off your butts! Practice rationing now! Kick that alcohol and/or smoking habit. Get off of your prescribed meds if you can by implementing healthy life style changes....learn to drink your coffee black and that sugar is a treat, not a staple. This all takes time (especially if you're on meds! Don't just stop those). Lose the weight, get in shape, while you prep and watch prepping youtube channels!

I'd argue that bugging out has limits. Weight limits on gear, what can be carried, what should be carried, when to do so. It seems that everybody romanticizes bugging out as the first option. Yet I haven't seen many people bugging out due to current weather trends of below freezing temperatures. I also haven't seen ponchos or CWG mounted to the outside of bug out bags. Nor compasses on the shoulder strap, NOT ONE MAP in the map pouch on the back support of the pack. Whether or not the pew pews need to be carried is debatable. (Also haven't seen anybody bugging out with pew pews during this extreme cold.) But rifle weighs at least 8 pounds, a full mag 1 pound per. Add spare parts, additional ammo, cleaning kit - about extra 20 pounds. This isn't including a sidearm, a knife, or anything else for defense. Bugging out could be for one of two scenarios: 1) The area is too dangerous/you need to leave NOW. Staying is not an option. You can't use transportation. 2) You ran out of options bugging in. All of your resources are gone. Technology is no good and can't save you. You've fought everybody to preserve your life and have ran out of ammo/more suitable pew pews. All you got left is a blade, a .22, and a brick of ammo (amongst your other preps, obviously).

That’s one of the biggest issues I’ve observed in the “preparedness community” for over 25 years… being fit to fight. I’ve watched or read on folks building the “ultimate…xyz Bag” only to see this Big Green Tick (ALICE Large reference… those who know, know). There’s this romantic image of throwing a pack on your back and making it through adverse events with some grit and determination… unfortunately, most aren’t calculating the physicality factors of 19th century folks or conditioned folks who were former Soldiers (Read Rambo…). Physical fitness is the first line of “survival”… health, strength, and endurance are all the prerequisites to having the odds in your favor. Great observations!!! Truth bomb for some!

Fitness and Resilience. How long can you go without eating? If your blood sugar drops when you dont eat every 6h you are out of luck. And it really easy to train.

Amen brother. You're exactly right and I am not exempt from who you are talking about. I'm still young but I'm old enough to where I've suffered multiple crucial injuries in my life. My hands have numerous fractures that didnt heal right from fist fights as a youth. Defending myself from bullies and such things, I broke my hands alot and as a young man, admittedly I didnt do anything about it but let em heal by themselves. Now in my 30's I fracture my hands very easily. I punched a trash bookcase made of cheap material and got a boxers facture. And then my ankle too. I got screws and plates in there holding shit together and while its fine with normal everyday use right now. Rucking 80lbs of gear for 10-12 hours a day would kill my ankle. Things like running with that weight would also be hard, and lets just say my ankles a lot more susceptible to injury now than it was before I broke it. And a broken ankle in a grid down event equals a slow death. Im also a smoker lol on top of that. My plan is, if SHTF im bugging in. I got some supply. A garden. Can make rain water collectors and do things to purify at home if it came down to it. I got plenty of guns and extra gear to replace broken parts atm. But yeah, If I had to bug out. The only way I could possibly being a grey man, and leaving everything but the bare essentials and what I can conceal. Ide be better off blending than running and hiding at that point.

I Agee. If you are old and infirm don’t plan on some fast getaway over rough terrain. Best leave early as possible and drive or plan on staying in current location and living and defending as you can. Conflict avoidance will be the best policy.

At 68, I won't be running with a heavy pack on. My group will be here on my farm when SHTF. We go camping as often as possible. We have a Plan B and a Plan C if needed.

Yes, hauling your pack around is a hige factor. Get used to it. People always aske why I take my bag everywhere. To condition myself. Over the past 8 years, I've hauled my pack rhat weights around 30-50 lbs. It needs feel like its a part of you. I don't feel my bag until the 4 hour mark or so, but to develop the endurance for long trips is key.

That's the one thing I tell a couple friends of mine! What's the point of all this overpriced shit if you can't carry or use it. My wife thinks I'm a little nuts when I throw on my plate carrier and grab my LOADED ruck and start walking. If you can't drive it,why in the HELL DID YOU BUY IT?

I put on my pack, walk 10 miles around the fjord to the gym, lift stuff and walk the 2 miles back home. The before and after can easily be extended by various routes. Alternatively, I just go to the woods. Finally got some show shoes, so no there's no stopping me.

If you can't carry your gear or yourself for at least 30 miles you'd be better off to fortify your home and get prepared to make your stand from your home but figure out some sort of escape plan because you would probably eventually get over run if you did any good from a single location, they'd leave a hole in the ground where your home once was

Right i live in the smokey mountains of nc i just did a ruck up pisgah state forest 10 miles total but the first 5 were going literally straight up mountain sides so step if you lost your footing that you may not be alive if you went down but anyway that was with 40lbs on my back and it was one of the hardest things ive ever done and im in good shape. Just seeing the number 30 for miles just scares me 😂😂

As I'm military adjacent, anything to do with the military is the right way! I've met preppers that talk the talk, but when I take them to come with me for my treks, they can't walk the walk! I'm currently 46, but I'm more fit than the average 29 year old I was blessed to learn from and train with former ROK special forces when I was young!

Our point, exactly. Former military, medical concerns but not dead. Avid preparers, ranchers we were curious. We wanted to see how long we could endure given what we had already accomplished. As of today working on 4.5 months without grocery or any shopping. Interesting times. We have surprised ourselves! Also have been practicing since the '60's. Deployment to God's Elbow is great rehearsal.

Walking unloaded is barely adequate exercise, I have a decent civilian "Bergen" rucksack that I started to load up differently as in various weight loads always with a 3L hydration bladder, the thing weighs about 5kg/12lbs with just the bag and full water bladder lol soon as I get a week worth of stuff packed in it I'm carrying an easy 25kg/55lbs and can haul it for miles in the city then a few more miles along river banks.

If you a long distance runner you slap a ruck you going to break with all that weight. Also includes non conditioned bodybuilder or regular joe. Make sure to prioritize health fitness not performance workouts from the get go. Thats how to break your body. Crawl, walk, jog, run, sprint, walk, jog. You don't have navy seal every day 😂. Stay healthy
