Y’all. I changed the title. It was clickbait and in no way have I ever felt like the camera you use to make films is at all important. I actually think it’s the least interesting thing about filmmaking or photography. If you’re new here then you may have missed it but I’ve always stood tall on gear being an after thought in any work I create. I was excited about using the camera and that’s all I wanted to express. Sometimes you just watch something and you're like "Holy shit, this is vibes". I just found this channel and as someone who secretly geeks over cinema and film I just want to say absolutely amazing stuff. The framing / color / sound all of it. These intro sequences are gold and I know how much work it takes to put it all together and I appreciate it. I see the details. The same way a lot of us photographers look at Leica as the pinnacle and cream of the crop for photography, the same can be done with ARRI in the cinema world. With it's rich history and the legends such as Roger Deakin, Martin Scorsece, Richardson, and etc that uses ARRI. While the cost of the Alexa is ridiculous, I do think it's tailored to you especially with your previous filmmaking experience including the production of your videos.

To be honest my man, the good news is that I’ve seen more cinematic footage shot on fx3 then that footage of you riding that bike, which is a huge testament to the theory it’s not the camera but who’s using it. And that footage of yours that plays mid video of two guys jumping off a fence looks more like an Alexa.

It’s just another digital camera. A very reliable, good digital camera but that’s it. Btw only one of my four favorites movies has been shot with an Alexa and only half of it and with a mathematical film emulation applied. The rest was shot with Panavision or Arri film cameras. It doesn’t matter. Especially after streaming compression. You do something for the big screen fine. But apart from that it’s do you want to shoot digital, film, or digital and use a film emulation.

I find arri footage easy to grade actually when transformed to a rec709 colorspace in davinci, the extended highlight information can be quite confusing ti tackle as you need to crank that gain wheel down quite a lot.

I’m a local 600 camera operator and the reality is in the real world of film making Arri cameras are used on 9/10 jobs. The other camera is the Sony Venice 1 or 2. So in a way your title was correct. People can hate but those are just the facts. More movies, television shows, and commercials are shot with Arri than any other camera system in the world. Are they perfect? Hell no but they are the most used. Can you make movies with other cameras? Of course but cinematographers don’t and yet there are plenty of other choices. Also when it comes to shooting film Arri is pretty much the only choice you have in terms of reliability and several choices of shooting different film perfs.

It’s nice. But it’s not raptor. It’s not monstro. It’s not Gemini. Those cameras can hang with arri much better and are also used in big productions. Just sayin

One of the things I really appreciated when I first started working with the Alexa as an assistant was how easy it was to work with. The weight was an adjustment but that was on the old XT Plus I don't think owning an Alexa is totally necessary as they are so expensive and targeted at the rental market. With the Alexa35 out now, the price of renting a Mini for a project will come down considerably.

Not necessarily, there is still a market for the Alexa Classic, ST, mini and etc but the Alexa 35 rents for like $2,500/day. Unless you’ve got decent budget commercials/MV/Films, you’ll still get projects renting minis for $600-800/day. Take it from someone who works at a rental house and owns a mini.

Great camera to use absolutely. And they are built like tanks and survive a LOT of punishment. For menu systems, my favs are Blackmagic, ARRI, RED, Canon, then Sony in that order. Simple menus are the best menus.

4:18 - The paradox behind that argument is with such big budgets and such high detail to production design any camera with 11+ stops of actual DR would have done the same job. I don't buy the idea that an Alexa somehow makes or breaks a blockbuster film.
