Short Play: "Bound by Purpose"
Characters:
Jackson: A sales representative, a man in his early 30s, feeling confused about his life and work.
Ellie: A colleague and close friend of Jackson.
Mr. Somchai: The sales team leader.
Scene 1: In the Sales Office
(Jackson is sitting at his desk, staring at his computer screen filled with sales figures, but his eyes are vacant.)
Jackson: (Muttering to himself) Why does life feel so empty? The sales are good, but I still don't feel happy...
(Ellie walks in with a coffee, smiling, and sits beside him.)
Ellie: Hey, Jackson! You look tired. Busy today?
Jackson: Not really, just... feeling like my life lacks meaning. I work every day, but I don't even know what for.
Ellie: (Smiling softly) I used to feel the same way. But then I learned something... We work because it has meaning for us, not just for the numbers or praise from others.
Jackson: What do you mean?
Ellie: You have to find a purpose in life that is yours, not what others expect or what material things you desire.
Scene 2: In the Meeting Room
(Mr. Somchai stands at the front of the meeting room, going over the team’s sales figures. Jackson sits at the back, deep in thought.)
Mr. Somchai: Jackson! Your sales are fantastic. I want you to be an example for others. You’re the kind of employee everyone should look up to.
Jackson: (Replying softly) Thank you…
(The others clap, but Jackson still looks distant and empty.)
Scene 3: At a Café After Work
(Jackson and Ellie sit together, drinking coffee.)
Jackson: Ellie, I feel like I've been chaining myself to work, to others’ praise, but in the end, it doesn't make me happy.
Ellie: That's because you need to find what gives you real value. Purpose in life doesn’t come from sales numbers or compliments from the boss. It comes from what truly matters to you.
Jackson: (Sighs) So, what should I do?
Ellie: Start by asking yourself, what’s your purpose? Why do you work, and does it make you feel fulfilled?
Jackson: (Pauses, thinking) I used to love traveling... and helping others grow. But it’s been so long since I focused on those things.
Ellie: Exactly! Maybe it’s time you bind yourself to that purpose again. Go back to what you love, and create happiness from it.
Scene 4: Back at the Office the Next Day
(Jackson stands, looking at a world map on the office wall. His expression has changed-not empty, but determined.)
Jackson: (Muttering to himself) If I travel to new places, I could sell to clients abroad, and I’d get to learn new things along the way.
(Mr. Somchai walks in.)
Mr. Somchai: Jackson, you look energized! What’s happened?
Jackson: (Smiling) I just found my true purpose.
(Jackson smiles and looks out the window with confidence, ready to bind his life with the purpose he’s discovered.)
