One of the biggest problems in LE today is the culture at most departments makes it hard to stay in shape. 10-12.5 hour shifts, admins discourage officers working out on their breaks, lack of staffing meaning working even more hours and days than they normally would…..lots of stress driven both by external issues and internal agency politics. Once you’re done with all that, do you spend what time you have with your wife/kids or do you spend it at the gym? On top of that, if you get hurt working out….most agencies don’t cover you so you can’t work and you’re burning your own time….assuming you aren’t retired out on disability. Often times the guys who are in shape are SWAT guys who are covered if they get hurt working out. Is it still possible to stay in shape? Of course it is, but the reality of how had agencies make it for their guys to stay in shape shouldn’t be ignored.

@Jedi391 Hi I had a quick specific question about one of the points you raised above...when you say that some admins discourage officers working out on their breaks, could you give an example of something like this that you have seen? I'm not sure what kinds of breaks LEOs or COs get, but if they have a short break for 15 to 20 minutes(?) and they are working within a facility that has access to a pull-up bar or flat bench, do the admins tell them not to take that short break to do a few pullups or reps on a bench? Unless they're worried about them going for a max and getting hurt, it sure sounds weird.

Police departments are definitely goofy that way. Most fire stations, third service EMS stations, and even private EMS companies like AMR (specifically where the IAEP has control) have gyms for their First Responders to workout. This is a lesson I sadly learned myself. I was always working out; did CrossFit and triathlons on a regular basis. And I ate like this was the case. Got back from a deployment and immediately PCS’d and proceeded to basically stop the workouts while eating as if I hadn’t. Over 3 years I ballooned up from 185 to 248. I was in denial about how bad it had gotten, but nearly failing a PT test woke me up. I’ve been doing the 75 Hard Challenge (it’s worth the time, look it up) and am down to 214. I still have a ways to go, but feel a million times better physically, mentally, and emotionally. By the end of summer I hope to be back in the low 190’s, but stronger than before. Don’t let laziness and denial run your life, get off your butt and fix yourself; we owe it to our friends, family, coworkers, job, and ourselves.

This all comes down to hiring standards, lack of standards once your in, and the entitlement mentality within public safety officials (ironically public safety officials like to make disparaging comments about the “entitled” society when they act entitled). As a former LEO, there are plenty of examples (first hand) of co-workers that are completely out of shape, lack of training (physical, mental, and emotional), and the excuses of why they are that way. We are not asking for fellow officers to be CrossFit or martial arts experts or athletes, but in enough shape to make sound decisions and to be viable within the profession. Also, the academy’s should revamp their fitness, wellness, nutrition, and defensive tactics training to something more modern and viable for officers in the field. Also, if you promote to an admin gig, you should still be relatively in good health and shape. Going admin is no excuse to loosen those standards.

They pay those guys peanuts. Anyone who is competent in security will work at a casino or are a patrol officer in a higher paying area. You also got these places where they work these guys to death. When you're pushing over time every week you are likely just mentally and physically taxed to the point where you don't care to take care of yourself anymore. I remember my active duty times we worked pretty brutal shifts. You just didn't want to work out after being at work for 12-14 hours. Deployments were worse since they too were 12 hour shifts with 1-3 hours of getting ready to get onto post or get off of post. Burned me out real quick. You did go to the gym a lot more because you had absolutely nothing better to do. The security/LEO field really likes to suck as much as they can out of you. If you could keep enough people on the force, pay them pretty well, and give them time to actually work out and practice while being paid you would see the quality of officers and security personnel skyrocket. Our most fit guys in my career field were the Ravens. They guarded the planes that flew everywhere. They were fit because when they weren't with the planes they were just training and exercising every day during work hours because that is what they were paid to do. Us flight guys just worked and worked, then deployed and worked. Back office guys always wondered why we struggled to stay fit. We just didn't have that luxury and the expectation was to just do all that upkeep on the little bit of free time. You really had to love working out in order to stay fit in such a role.

I took a course called Target Focus Training presented by Tim Larkin and he pointed out that the self defense training is usually a competition, trading blows, not a fight for your life scenario. The idea behind those techniques were designed for people even with disabilities could use these techniques to defend themselves and they are brutal and result in injury to the assailant not just pain. target areas such as eyes, throat, side of neck, and joints and others. He was forbidden to come to the UK and teach because they felt the techniques were to brutal. Basically when you are in the fight for your life all bets are off and nothing is not OK.

When I got there he had destroyed every single piece of furniture in the house and threw the kitchen table through the window in the kitchen. I am 5'7" 185lbs. I managed to talk to this dude at taser point just long enough till my coworkers got there and we managed to subdue him with taser deployment and 3 pairs of cuffs and shackles. Dude is by far the largest man I've ever arrested, the strongest, and the most unhinged. Will never forget it. I have been battling cancer since 2015. I am not confident in a physical confrontation. I have carried since 2000. My eyes are not what they were back in SF or Aviation, so I have gone to a red dot on my EDC pistol. Having said all that, I feel situational awareness is more important to me now than ever. It was taught to me its always the #1 thing that will keep you alive, but ego and overconfidence has led me to go places that were not smart to be going, I was lucky. I still carry, and still can shoot well, just not as quick as I once was. However I have always believed in the Vickers way of putting it speed is fine, accuracy is final. Your milage may vary.

Ideally, one office carries from a good distance (dozens of feet away when possible or more) while others that are not armed handle things hands-on. Maintaining good proximus is drilled into our heads as being your first real line of defense and that's especially so when firearms are in the mix. The fact that this guy wasn't even at least front cuffed bothers me to no end as well.

Jiu Jitsu is SUPER important. Your most important line of self defense is your body and mind first and foremost. She did a great job falling to her back to get her legs in between her and the attacker. This is called Punch Block Series (PBS) Stage 4 in Gracie Combatives (adult beginner curriculum). There she can manage the distance, manage the damage. And like you said, if she had a gun holstered, easily draw and fire on the attacker as taught in Gracie Survival Tactics (GST). I can't wait to train with you, Mike! 🥋👊🏼🔥

I love your content. In regards to BJJ and street survival I leave this. I'm 5'5 Korean. I started doing Martial Arts at for over 20yrs. I've studied Muay Thai, BJJ, Lethwei, Boxing, and Street Combatives. I've bounced in urban Baltimore night clubs for 15+yrs where fighting is a regular occurance. I also have 10yrs of experience in executive protection. 1. BJJ is not a great self defense as a whole because of 2 on 1 scenarios in real life. Being on the ground is thee worst place to be as a smaller weaker individual. 2. There are no rules for criminals and attackers so when they have a knife, pull your hair, put a thumb in your eye, an orfice, punch you in the balls etc. The game changes. 3. There are no refs, weight classes, or such a thing as a fair fight. There is only to fight for survival. You guys teach real life survival skills and respect that. It's real an honest. I'm going to be 100 percent real. In real life BJJ is not going to be effective in 90 percent of scenarios. Being Asian, small, stand out in an industry where size is used to deter situations in a city that has extreme violence is an every day. I can tell you that you need a blend of Martial Arts and that it is practical where size, speed, and efficiency can be executed at the basic level. The basic principles is for someone to learn these skill sets in months vs years. I've trained pro-fighters, amateurs, police, corrections officers, executive protection, and civilians. All different purposes. I can tell you what I teach a pro fighter vs a civilian is way more aggressive and the civilian can learn faster then years of training. I would love to talk you guys and help you. I have references from instructors, police, pro-fighters, and business owners to verify my experience and skill set in this particular empty hands self defense. If you would like to discuss further please let me know.

Thank you for your input! I have thought the same way about blending arts, but the organization I worked for recently jumped on the Bjj wagon without, with a majority of the training staff and higher ups getting their “black belts” in Bjj. As someone whose background is primarily bjj, I did not think the Bjj training by itself helped on me being successful in violent encounters. but it did train my mind to be resilient and train around problems and find solutions. I agree protection specialists (executive, security, police etc) should invest in training multiple martial arts and higher levels of physical fitness.

What is this, 1995? Who says to only train BJJ? Of course BJJ is incredibly helpful to train for self defense, especially if you aren't a dumbie and know not to train sport jiujitsu only. BJJ is a great self defense sport for many reasons. Who says to take the fight to the ground? BJJ you know, has the guard yeah? It's incredibly important to be competent off your back to not get soccer kicked in the face and yes of course a technical stand up from your back is a part of jiujitsu. Just like using butterfly hooks to create separation and force standing up. Just like being able to redirect non-trained fighters forward pressure in any number of effortless ways when the opportunity presents itself. What about Chokes? Is it better to learn choke survivals and escapes versus... I don't know, not having that? If for some reason we take a time machine back to 1995 and someone is deadset on taking 1 martial art for self defense BJJ is still going to be the best. 2 on 1 situations existing does not magically erase all the valid lessons someone needs to have taught to them to even get 2 stripes on a white belt. You cannot "avoid the ground". It exists. You cant endlessly avoid slipping on puddles or getting cheapshot and waking up on the ground. Being able to fight off your back and get out of there is the most important skill to learn precisely because it is the worst case scenario. How would your points #1-3 discount the fact that in the scenario Mike showed, that woman could have use multiple open guard techniques to sweep, submit, or even just strip grips from her pant legs? In that video all I see are effortless de la riva and other open guard attacks ready for the woman if only she knew. Idk, it's just weird to ignore these obvious points. Really makes me question your rank in BJJ as well - sorry to go there, but I just can't help but question why someone would say this stuff about BJJ and have a high rank. Especially since youre supposedly in the industry and seen so many arrest which all inevitably have grappling in it 🤷‍♀

Patrick C. I don't know if you're a bot, a troll, or just didn't read what you wrote. You stated BJJ would be great for self defense sport... self defense is not a sport. You're defending you're well being, safety, your life. The other statement about not having to go to the ground... and then you mention going to the guard. Which is you being on the ground and fighting off your back. As for 2 on 1's. You're right this isn't 1995 and you're typically not fighting just one person but 2. You ever go put with your buddies and a fight happens. They don't circle around you like the movies and start cheering. Normally it's chaos your friends are fighting, you're fighting, and if some drunk stranger feels like swinging on you because they want to make it on World Star highlight reel they're going to. BJJ has it's benefits and should be used to escape, evade, get off the ground, and if you can snap an arm bar, choke, etc then that is a bonus. I've seen many of people get booted in the face because they are wrestling, grappling, etc. Situational awareness is not being on the ground tied up to 1 person when often there are more than 1 assailants. A guy that can box a little can knock out 2 guys with a hook and cross (2 people in 2 seconds). Snatching heal hooks, chokes and arm bars is going to take putting hands on, positioning, and executing. Takes time. What happens if you run into someone proficient in grappling... does this turn into a NAGA no-gi tournament... you trying to pass someone's guard... hope to God his friend doesn't kick you in the face in the process... you have no time. You need to get on your feet and run away OR fight and start turning people's light switches off.

I think you may be missing the point of BJJ - I prefer the way Clint Smith states it: "How many gunfights have you been in in your life? How many times have you tripped and fallen? You've tripped and fallen more ..." BJJ isn't the "go-to" strategy. It's another tool in the proverbial toolbox for if (really a matter of WHEN) you end up on the ground then you at least have options and aren't struggling through your OODA loop trying to figure out wtf to do :)

The best advice I've seen was on KZbin from an old WW2 instructor who trained special forces back in the day, he said something along the lines of "If you try to box me, I will break your legs. If I see an opening, I will poke your eyes out and fuck you up." or something along those lines, it's been a while since I've seen it. But it's basicly saying let go of that boxing or sportsman attitude and put yourself in survival mode, if someone is trying to fuck you up and you have no choice but to engage, be prepared to fuck them up instead. It doesn't matter how, just defend your life. Sportsmanship will get you nowhere in a fight for survival type of scenario.

The advantage of martial arts is that you learn to optimize your strength and visualize confrontations. Most martial arts are taught to compete, such as not protecting your head from punches and avoiding lethal strikes, which is counterproductive to actual self defense. The important thing is reading your environment to avoid becoming a victim. When forced to defend yourself you need to be able to pull all stops and decimate your attacker. Perhaps only the military has this kind of training. The mindset is most important in my opinion, because older or weaker people still need to defend themselves, and not everyone can be a Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris.

We were taught to keep our gun side the furthest away from the perp as you can. This caused them to have to reach across your whole body to get to your gun and that will leave you with options before the fight for the gun. People would not believe that amount of poor training a lot of law enforcement receives in this country. I was his uke (throwing dummy) for classes he would teach and he threw the hardest I've ever been thrown, and he wasn't even going full speed/power. He also demonstrated a front straight kick to us, short and stocky he was, kicked a trifold tumble mat bring held by an equally stocky individual that out weighed him by 20lbs and sent the individual off his feet and back a few feet. Dang impressive.

I'm a software developer by profession - but I often carry for various reasons. Before I lost 30 lbs., I was irritated with carrying because it was uncomfortable and uneasy. I'm now 185 lbs 5' 10'' - losing weight makes a huge difference in the confidence of conceal carry. I lost weight mainly through cutting carbs and cycling through the pandemic in case anyone is wondering.

I’m a 120lb female and I’m in shape but I know I can’t out fight a man. Legally Carrying a weapon ( on your person) not in a purse is a great equalizer. I’ve had extensive training under stress, it’s so important, you know how to deal with the adrenaline dump and don’t end up with tunnel vision.

Good that you tackled this issue Mike! I will mention a couple of things......One thing that drives me crazy that in 2022, officers still transport inmates to jail with no cuffs or cuffs in front of them..NO Another, is this situation clearly shows all incarcerated individuals should be belly chained. Will that still stop all attacks, no. But it’s vitally important. By the way, the inmate here was not shot!!

I work at a hotel in Cancun, a group of guys (white males not overweight) I heard one of them say we have to go on the 4th floor, the floor I was on was the 2nd, they clicked the button of the elevator, then another guy said "We're American, we don't take stairs".

Mike great point. I retired from the Air Force after 30yrs. So many guys get out of shape when they retire. You gotta stay fit for all situations. My only critique of the AF is that they don’t teach pilots combative fighting……

In answer to your question regarding MA integration with gunfighting. At the core my self defense commences with MA outward from that I incorporate a weapon (Knife first) then may pistol (Springfield Hellcat). I completely agree with you that your self defense should start with the basics environment awareness, verbal skills then the ability to manage physical confrontation well enough to if needed eventually employ a firearm as last resort. I carry my pistol pocket carry because I want to be able to move and fight not having to worry about my weapon in some shuffle like in your first video clip. My background is when I was younger I competed in MMA, Jujistu, Judo, Amateur Boxing with a moderate mount of success. So whenever I incorporate a weapon it always is from that perspective. You always need to control your immediate range of contact before you can utilize any further weapons. Always a pleasure to watch your KZbin podcasts.

Been training Jiu-jitsu for 6 months and love it. My wife trains with me a little 5'2 140lbs but she is very strong and her game has become the triangle choking/omaplata game working from guard as that's where she would more than likely find herself in an altercation like we see in this video.

Yeap. You are right! Amazon is both a region and also a state in Brazil. And the Gracie's hail from the state of Pará, in the Amazon region.

My knee jerk reaction is to take this message personally. I am definitely overweight, but I have to acknowledge that extra weight undoubtedly is a hinderance to my performance. Hence why I work for a bank, and not in a physical job!

Empty hand is a fundamental principal of self defense. It can be your first mode of action or your last depending on the situation. It teaches you a mindset and awareness as well as strategy!

Abject Terror is what the Transportation Deputy/Officer just experienced. If he didn't know the definition of it then he can find his picture there. Joe Hurst taught Gracie BJJ to our officers and it's a valuable tool.

I've been a boxer for sometime. Most fights end up on the ground because most people can't throw a punch. When I spar with my ju jitsu buddy and he can never shoot on me effectively, one because in boxing we work angles and foot work extensively, two everytime he attempts to shoot I pop him with a jab, upper cut whatever. Imo you need striking and ju jitsu, in that order.

I think it's very important to be in shape and know how to defend yourself. Especially for those in law enforcement.
