Composition Notebooks are basically your standard spiral notebook but many where used back in the day as a means to write down lyrics for music. They also have multiple functions since they come with a section either in the front of back of the book with information like a periodic table of elements to SAT words or vocabulary. The joke stems from the fact that they are a very old book that goes back to maybe the 70's and their relevance today in the world of smart devices. Its since been trumped by Spiral notebooks for its ease of use and the problem with the back binding being spiral rings as apposed to a bound binding making the book not as versatile as its counter part. In short, its an old book that was kool and was an icon in its day but its outdated. The joke was a hipster reference
