Can you use Samsung Magician software on your Mac to update the SSD's firmware with this enclosure?
@iftibashir7 күн бұрын
No the Samsung software is Windows only (last time I checked anyways!)

Thank you for sharing your experience with this enclosure. Do you have any thoughts regarding your 0GB enclosure vs. the other options (ie. 1, 2, 4 or 8TB)? Provided you went with a Samsung NVMe, was there a minimum drive speed you considered to achieve the same performance shown in the video for this enclosure?
@iftibashir10 ай бұрын
Considering the interface is the real bottleneck with any external enclosure, as long as you use a fast NVMe speeds should be similar - the main difference will be keeping an eye on thermals and seeing which thermal throttles sooner, if ever. I do have an pre-populated unit on the way, which I believe come with OWC's own Aura IV drives, so will test and report back if drastically different to the 990 in this video ;o)

Great video. I'm thinking about the same setup (OWC Express 1M2 with Samsung 990 PRO NVMe 4TB). Can you update Samsung 990 Pro's firmware while it's in the OWC Express 1M2 with Samsung Magician Software on M4/M4 Pro Macs? If not, then you're better off using OWC SSDs.
@iftibashir7 күн бұрын
No you can only update Samsung drives on the Windows platform I'm afraid, but I find I very rarely update firmware anyways considering I had the max performance possible already (through a TB4/USB4 interface anyways)
@onlyvik10 ай бұрын
The acasis 405 pro m1 active cooled enclosure is a much better option. Connecting the owc to thunderbolt 3 ports have very slow speeds. I will return mine.

I prefer passive cooling as I like a quiet environment. As you can see in the testing, it work’s beautifully for me - I’ve actually ordered another!

When you say "slow" what computer are you using and what transfer speeds were you getting?
@Rushil6942010 ай бұрын
Have you tried the Zike drive enclosure? People are getting ~3800 MBps read and ~3300 write speeds with it. Although I believe it's the same controller, so I'm honestly not sure where the bottleneck on these is.

Thanks for testing testing this enclosure. Can you give an estimate of the capable speeds using a thunderbolt 3 port?
@EugWanker27 күн бұрын
This is not directly compatible with Thunderbolt 3. With Thunderbolt 3, it will drop down to USB 3.2 10 Gbps speeds, which will be less than 1000 MB/s, so roughly a third of the USB 4 speeds.

Thanks for the video. Have you tried it with any other then 990 Pro drives? Maybe some double sided ones? Is there a TB4 cable in the box and is it heavy?
@iftibashir7 ай бұрын
Its larger than other NVMe enclosures but not overly heavy - easily very portable. It comes with the cable in the box (albeit a short one as shown in the video). I have a second unit that came pre-populated with an 8TB OWC drive - works equally as well as the Samsung 990. Your bottleneck with external enclosures like this is generally the interface rather than the actual drive......

Great video. Thank you for posting it. It's been a few months. Are you still happy with the 1M2 and the Samsung 990 PTO SSD? How hot does the enclosure get?

Hi. I’m really interested in this enclosure but a little nervous about buying the wrong ssd drive for it. What should I be looking for so I don’t make a mistake? Many thanks, Simon.
@iftibashir3 ай бұрын
You can purchase with a drive pre-installed. If not I'd personally go for a WD SN850x, a Samsung 990 Pro, or a Sabrent Rocket Plus.......3 of the best IMO.

Get the ZIKE DRIVE instead, buy a 2Tb or 4TB M.2 Drive 980/990 pro. Format to APFS, you get 3300mb+ speed writes.

Not all about speed - it's about sustaining the speed through adequate cooling too.
@geodude4real4 ай бұрын
@@iftibashir agreed. but i'm curious, do you think I will ever be transferring enough data to hit a heat level that would then cause it to throttle? Like how much data would this be? Or is it possible that this throttling is really a hypothetical that may be unrealistic in the real world?

Easily enough for FCPX depending upon your interface.

It's larger than the Acasis, probably almost double the width, but I prefer the OWC as it's completely silent and runs cool. I use them for editing with FCPX and they have been fantastic.

I have a 2020 Intel iMac, and from the OWC website, it appears this does not support Thunderbolt 3. If you plug it into a computer with Thunderbolt 3, it drops down to 10 Gbps. I bought an OWC Envoy Pro SX, and I get 2800MB/s through Tunderbolt 3. Something that people with slightly older computers should keep in mind.
@thedailyremedy9682 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s I what I wanted to upgrade my 2017 iMac, but it’s expensive for my budget: I went for a compromise to still get the stability and reliability of OWC, ordering the Envoy express thunderbolt 3 with a 2tb Nvme-which will give me up to 1500mb/s-it’s less speed than the Envoy Pro SX but significantly more than my Samsung T7 SSD which I have been using for my 2014;iMac. And the cost of this set up is less than half of the price of the Pro SX.
