IGA SWIATEK'S 2022 TENNIS RECORD SEASON SUMMARY
This WTA 2022 season highlights review will show you all Grand Slam champions, WTA 1000, WTA 500 and WTA 250 champions and Top 10 players of the 2022 season. See how the WTA Race 2022 unfolded and which players gained points from January to November.
The video does not show the WTA world ranking. It shows the WTA Race which only includes all points won in the 2022 tennis season (just like how the ATP Race to Turin is not the same as the ATP world ranking). All players start from 0 and do not defend any points like in the world ranking. At the end of the season the top 8 players of the WTA Race qualify for the WTA Finals, the most prestigious tournament after the 4 Grand Slams. At that point the WTA race matches up with the world ranking. At the end of this video you will see the year end world ranking including the points gained in the season ending finals. You will also see which players won the most titles and matches and reached the most finals during the season.
2022 WTA Season summary
At the Australian Open 2022 Ash Barty became the first Australian Tennis player to win her home Slam since Lleyton Hewitt in 2001.
Iga Swiatek became the first woman to win the first 3 WTA 1000 titles of the year, winning the Doha Masters as well as the sunshine double (Indian Wells + Miami Masters). Swiatek set a winning streak of 37? matches breaking Venus Williams' record of the 2000s. Martina Navratilova's overall record winning streak of 70? still remains unmatched.
By winning the Italian Open (Rome Masters) Iga Swiatek made it 4/5 WTA 1000 or even 4/4 as she skipped the Madrid Masters event where Ons Jabeur claimed the first ever WTA 1000 title in her Tennis career.
At the French Open 2022 Swiatek then continued her dominance, winning her second Roland Garros title, defeating Coco Gauff in the final on Court Chatrier?. Like in 2020 when she won her first French Open title she became the champion a day before her idol Rafael Nadal won the title as well.
As Russian and Belarusian players were unable to participate in Wimbledon the ATP and WTA decided to not award points for the Grand Slam on grass. Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan but born in Russia ended up winning the Wimbledon title. Runner up Ons Jabeur missed.out on the chance to become the first Tunisian Grand Slam champion.
Iga Swiatek's dominance seemed to have faded away a bit when she had not won another title after her French Open win since the end of the clay court season. At both the WTA 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati she only reached Round 16 while Simona Halep tool the title in Toronto and Garcia won in Cincinnati. But at the US Open 2022 in New York the Polish world no 1 of Tennis came back and clinched her 3rd career Grand Slam title and her first US Open title. She further increased her advantage over the rest of the field in the WTA Race 2022. Ons Jabeur was the runner up in New York just like she had been in Wimbledon and was now clearly in second position in the race but without having a chance to still overtake Swiatek before the end of the 2022 WTA season. It became clear that Iga Swiatek would finish the year as no 1 of women's tennis.
In September and October Barbora Krejcikova, former number 2 in the WTA ranking and number 1 in doubles, showed that she is still a top 20 tennis player. She won back to back titles in Tallinn and Ostrava. In Ostrava Krejcikova defeated Iga Swiatek in front of Czech fans.
Swiatek was happy for Krejcikova but then also won another title herself a week later in San Diego.
Jessica Pegula managed to win the last WTA 1000 title of the WTA 2022 season in Guadalajara against María Sakkari I'm the final.
The WTA Finals 2022 were the last tournament of the year and featured the top 8 ranked female tennis players competing for the prestigious title. Iga Swiatek won all 3 of her group matches but then lost the semifinal to Aryana Sabalenka. Maria Sakkari had also won all her group matches before being defeated by Caroline Garcia who then took the WTA Finals title and trophy to finish the 2022 WTA Season on a high note.
