@Ginger Mathematician Yes, the Edexcel IGCSE Further Pure Mathematics specification. The one with the yellow and blue student textbook. It's an entirely different specification from the Cambridge spec.

Is giving an unknown a variable a requirement for getting full marks? There are some occasions where algebraic manipulation isn't really necessary because the relationships are more clear. I can't think of an example from a paper off the top of my head, but its something like "If I walked into a store with £58 and walked out with £36, what is the value of the goods I just bought?". I could say 58-x=22 and rearrange to solve, or I could just say 58-36=22 without doing any explicit algebra. The questions are not typically quite this simple, but you probably get what I mean. If setting up an equation with the unknown value as a variable isn't necessary to solve the problem, is it still required for full marks? Sometimes, it's more confusing to work it out algebraically because other ways are more intuitive.

While it may not always be necessary, using a variable would clearly show your thought process to the examiner and also reduce the chances of making silly mistakes, which is why I strongly suggest you to use variables 👍
