Moving from one normal spoon to taking literally three bites per spoon now I know why. She is compensating. Mom FTD Dementia no longer talks. Ask her to open her mouth and she perses her lips tight. Has the baby coughs that seemed too weird. Good information to help me the daughter understand why she is refusing food and lets drinks run out the corner of her mouth. End of life stage I knew and being OK with what they do eating and drinking is the best advice hospice nurse gave me. When it happens, let it go..,

The problem is I'm 70, have extreme difficulty swallowing, but I refuse to go to hospital or doctor because of extreme anxiety, and my ocds where I have to try and catch my breath every minute, and I can't after a while and I get even more anxious, also my teeth are chipped and decaying away my taste diminished over the past year not covid related and can't sleep, don't shower, live alone and want to be dead. I don't want to live in a body that's finished and a mind that is sick. I'm suffering 24hrs a day but do not want to live on feeding tubes and in a nursing home or institutions. I have no family and live alone. Dying sucks big time. And no one could understand what I'm going through physically and mentally. I wonder if my dysphagia is affecting my taste and if my thyroid is affecting my anxiety. And I realize that it's over. I have so many physical afflictions and mental. I can't sleep, can't eat, and am afraid of dying but I'm dying anyway and my anxiety and my mental problems stop me from seeking help. This has been going on over 2 years and getting worse and worse.

I’m so sorry to read that you are so alone, depressed and looking forward to a quick end. There has to be a medical person or facility to help you with these life’s problems in your city or locality. You are not alone, not if you can pull yourself together to do something about it and 70 is far from “old”. Bemoaning this fact will not get you anywhere. Pick yourself up, physically and mentally and go out the door to make enquiries of neighbours, the pharmacy, the library, any place to put you in contact with the appropriate authority to help you with your medical problems. I’m rooting for you. 🙏🏼 👍🏼 🧑🏼🦳 💕

Thank you. You have given me ideas to help support my dad until I can get the doctors to do something to help him.

My father in law, 93 wih dementia incontinence, regular fainting and swallowing issues. He is now even forgetting to swallow water that is in his mouth. He cannot swallow solids so has to be fed a rice and lentil khichri, soft scrambled eggs and oatmeal. I really feel that this is an autonomic catastrophe. You are just trying to sell your skill. The tips for caregivers were great though.

This is an wonderfully educational program. My mom has dementia, but has not progressed to this though, I have patients at work that struggle with this and you provided even more information that I had known about. Thank you so much.

Difficulty swallowing was one of my husband’s first symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia. I had to give him the Heimlich maneuver several times starting a few years before his diagnosis.

The inability to swallow was probably the last symptom my mama with vascular dementia developed. She passed about 2 weeks after this symptom appeared.💔

iN HER SIXTIES MY WFE DISFASIA (if spelling is correct) and got pneumonia , she had a gait problem, her blood pressure went down when she stood plus other things indicating dementia but the doctors never made a connection until well advanced Lewy bodies was diagnosed. I'm very dissapointed with her medical care

I'm so sorry to read this. My father who is 85 originally was diagnosed with slight vascular dementia, he also had a mini stroke on left side. Just before this diagnosis he was identified as having type 2 diabetes. He always kept this to himself living on his own and not telling me. This was around 2015. I have been caring for him past 3 years full time. Our health service here in uk is abysmal, you wouldn't take an animal there for help. I'm ex NHS and his doctor and nurses know this and expect me to give the medical care he needs. I get no help at all or support. In past few months I have noticed the trembling in his hands along with other things associated with lewy but his doctor refuses to investigate. He now has sneezing and coughing during meal times, much much slower to eat, takes 1/4 of teaspoon amount of food on a fork and takes about 5 minutes to eat this. He has begun eating with his mouth open and struggles with solids. A full meal will take around 4 hours to complete. He refuses help. I do my best with the meals. I too worry about the pneumonia part as he has a runny nose from time to time and when he drinks water he enjoys holding it in his mouth. Sometimes he coughs and sneeze with this also so it's not just food. I also give soups but any meal time is messy. He wants to feed himself. He also has a catheter and is supposed to have this checked weekly by nurses and a 12 week indwelling catheter change. None of this is on time with the nurses. Always excuses. Catheter care is provided by me but not the indwelling. I belive he is in late stages of dementia now, he still knows who I am but he sleeps more and he has become very irritable and anxiety is very high. His mobility is very poor and I continue to help him with exercises but I get fobbed off. It just seems like they don't care about our elders but hold hands out for money really well. We can only do our best yet we kick ourselves because we think we can always have done more or why didn't I do that instead. I know time with my dad could be short. I can only hope that when the time comes he passes gently. Thank you for being brave in sharing your story. I'm so sorry the system is broken. Much love to you ❤ 🇬🇧

My husband is 81 years old and has had several small strokes although he has not been seriously affected physically. Mentally he has been diagnosed with vascular dimension. He has trouble swallowing thin liquids and has been prescribed thicken liquids only. He does not have any problem with more solid foods. I too have had a more massive stroke that did not affect me mentally. I have had trouble to swallow some textures of food especially rice I also seem to produce a very thick sticky mucus that I swallow and collects in my throat. Swallowing sticky foods seems to get caught in this mucus. Then I feel the present of the lump in my throat that blocks anything else I swallow, even liquids. Frequently I will regurgitate what ever is stuck along with excessive mucus. I never cough and eventually this lump of food will go on down after several minutes. Do you have any suggestions for me😅😢
