Ignatian Contemplation which is Imaginative Prayer with Scripture
This method of prayer, contemplation, and meditation was developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola in the 1500's to help people get to know Jesus through imaginative interaction with scripture
First take a moment to get your surrounding the way that you want them.
Ignatian Contemplation is a way of using all of your senses and imagination to connect with God and by becoming a participant in the story being read. Let the Spirit Guide you.
I will read the same scripture story 4 times with 1 minute in between so your imagination can connect with the story.
Before each reading I will tell you what to focus on in the scripture
After the 4th reading we will end this session but you should spend 5-10 minutes letting the story continue to unfold in your imagination. Then come back and comment on who or what you were in the story and what happened. There is no right or wrong answer.
First Reading
Listen to the story and try to pick up on the basic things happening in the story. Where is the story, Who is in the story, and what is happening.
Second Reading
Listen to the story and dive a little deeper noticing details like who is in charge, are there more people around and what are they doing, what is the setting and environment, what time of day is it, what is the mood.
Third Reading
Feel yourself in the story. Are you one of the main characters, somebody just watching, an animal, or just an object like a rock or water pitcher? What are you doing? How do you feel? Are there more sounds or smells that are not in the text? How are the people around you feeling?
Fourth Reading
After this last reading let the story unfold. See where God and The Holy Spirit take you with the story in your imaginiation. Connect with Jesus and get to know him better.
After your time come back and comment on your experience.
At 23 Streams we want to provide resources to help you be in the presence of God all of the time. We have playlists for every part of the day.
