I’ve been deleting any videos or playlists which reference outdated mark schemes and / or specifications. This has turned out to be a greater number than I anticipated: so far I’ve deleted approximately 500 videos! Unfortunately this includes the Of Mice and Men videos, which I made for the old GCSE spec. I appreciate that the content might have been useful, but I did not want there to be any chance of causing confusion about the exam requirements. The plan is to work on a new series on the text, where all teaching is generic and applicable to any exam board, but this will take some time.

How does Dickens present ideas about guilt and blame in the novel as a whole. (30 marks) Thesis: Dickens presents guilt and blame by the Latin phrase of Momento Mori which means ‘Remember you will die’, dickens uses this phrase because Jacob Marley who was Scrooge’s past businessman and he talks to Scrooge in a Christian allusion manner. I am going to be talking about how guilt and blame is presented by Poverty, Childhood/adulthood throughout Scrooges life and his guilt and how revolution changed the whole society in a Christmas Carol. Paragraph 1: Dickens presents guilt and blame in the whole novella by scrooges life throughout his childhood and his adulthood. In Stave 1, Jacob Marley who is Scrooges Past businessman visits Scrooge and talks to him in a Christian allusion manner. Marley feels regret over how he treated the poor when he was alive and his biggest regret was how he didn’t light the poor by helping them and he doesn’t want Scrooge to end up like himself with ‘carrying the chains he forged in life’ this quote suggests that dickens message of Marleys ghost is that if Scrooge doesn’t help the poor he will either suffer in this life or the next life. Scrooge got a visit from 2 business men but his response was ‘Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?’ this quotation suggests that Scrooge doesn’t feel empathy towards the poor and how they are suffering, all this links to the Pattern of attachment and how Scrooges father mistreated Scrooge in his early childhood years and how it’s affecting him in his adulthood years. This makes the reader feel a sense of guilt for Scrooge due to the fact that he hasn’t any thought for the poor but only himself. Paragraph 2: Dickens presents guilt and blame throughout the novella by the Industrial Revolution changing the whole society. In Stave 3, the ghost of Christmas present shows Scrooge 2 children ‘this boy is ignorance and this girl is want, but most of all beware the boy as written on his forehead ‘DOOM’ this quotation suggests that if we don’t educate poor young boys they they would find themselves committing crimes and turning violent also in 1848 when the Industrial Revolution started to happen everyone started to lose their jobs as machinery took over which led people into poverty. This is also refers to Guilt and blame by dickens wanting people to change their personal ways as well as changing their social lives. This makes the readers feel that people like Scrooge is to blame as they are ignorant to the poor and destitute and they need to change their ways to make a better society. Paragraph 3: Dickens presents guilt and blame throughout the novella by poverty, in Stave 4, the ghost of Christmas yet to come shows Scrooge his grave and scrooge feels instant guilt because he mistreated Bob Cratchit and his family and this represents Scrooges Momento Mori, in stave 2 scrooge says ‘But it’s too late now’ and this quotation suggest that he thinks that he doesn’t deserve a second chance but throughout the whole novella is his second chance to start afresh. In Stave 5, scrooge becomes a second Father towards Tiny Tim. This makes the readers feel fond of Scrooge as started of being a miserly, misanthropic and tight fisted old man to a generous and second father to Tiny Tim. Conclusion: Overall, dickens presents guilt and blame through the whole novella on how scrooge feels guilty on how he treated the poor, but people like scrooge breaks society in half and they treat the poor and destitute like rubbish and throw them into workhouses.

Scrooge was a miser, who at first absolutely despised the idea of Christmas, furthermore having an agenda against the poor, for example he states "decrease the surplus population" this is a capitalist quote which really emphasises what scrooge and in some cases other upper class people thought about the poor. Dickens then uses a simile to describe scrooge: Solitary as an oyester, we think of an oyester as being hard on the outside and soft on the inside so Dickens perhaps already foreshadows that scrooge with face an eventual redemption. We see the introduction of Marleys Ghost who at the start of the novella is dead to begin with: "dead as a door nail" this supernatrual appearance really shocks the reader as we are introduced to somebody really close to scrooge, perhaps scoorges only friend. Marley is introduced as frightening as having keys, safes etc attached to him and wore a robe underneath his chin with a chain holding him down, Marley really warns scrooge that if he carries on with this awful money grabbing behaviour that he will end up as his fate through the quote " you have a chance yet and hope of escaping my fate" The nouns chance and hope shows scrooge that he can avoid Marleys fate. Marley is described via a rule of 3, "captive bound and double ironed" Dickens use of group of 3 is to reiterate how trapped marley feels in his punishment. Marley then states " i am doomed to wander through the world" Dickens hints at religous reasons for marleys torment, such as the verb doomed which perhaps shows heaven and hell and further emphasises that the fact that marleys punishments are dreadful and abysmal. Marley states that scrooge will be haunted by 3 ghosts. Marley is the one to explain to scrooge that he will be given the chance to escape the fate that he is in and to change. The verb "will" implies that scrooge has no other option in this matter. The first appearance of an incarnation of a christmas ghost is in fact the ghost of christmas past: Dickens presents this ghost as very timid and innocent. The ghosts purpose is to show past experiences of scrooge in his childhood and his prime. One of the scenes were brought right back to when scrooge was sent to a boarding school by his father, we realise here scrooge is lonely as he had been left back and he had really nobody to talk with, Furthermore this school was a very rubbish school as it states "decaying" which suggests the school is on the brink of collapse. One more scene was that Belle had part ways with Scrooge, older scrooge was dreading every moment of this scene, this scene was significant because it really portrays to scrooge and the reader that if you desire money over relationships you will struggle or perhaps never will find a sexual partner, and loyal friends. At the latter stages of this ghost scrooge uses an extinguisher cap to hide the light which symbolises the truth and knowledge but when he covered the light he could not cover the whole of it which suggests that there is no way of hiding the real meaning of christmas and he can not ignore his past actions. Then we are introduced to The ghost of christmas present, this ghost is presented as very jolly and jovial these adjectives show the spirits positive nature. This is a spirit whose physical presence and jolliness fill the room perhaps symbolising dickens desire for good will towards others in all its forms to spread in a similar way. He says to scrooge "come in! and know me better man!" The spirit uses the imperative to comfortably welcome scrooge. He is powerful and dominant in his own way but most of all a friendly colossal giant. He takes scrooge to bob cratchits house where he blesses them, we know that Bob was scrooges employee where scrooge payed him next to nothing per week, despite their poverty the cratchits miners and sailors all celebrate christmas in a similar way there is a sense of community christmas day is special there is good will to others and singing. Scrooge did not know that Cratchit had a crippled son tim and so this shows their relationship bond was not strong whatsoever the spirit reminds scrooge that only God can judge whether a person is worthy or not, through the quote " it might be that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless.... than this poor child. Which shows that if you are selfish now you will suffer in the after life. The ghost also shows scrooge a scene of fezziwigs party, Fezziwig was scrooges employer, scrooge is close to this man because of that, Fezziwig is presented as very jolly and jovial. We know that Fezziwig is a business man but not only that he is a kind hearted and generous one. Which contrasts Scrooges characteristics at the beginning of the Novella. The reason to why Dickens shows this scene is to show the reader and scrooge not only can you be making profits as a business owner you can also be kind hearted and generous. and give back to the poor. He also let people go early on christmas eve which further emphasises his light heartedness. After this 2 children appear from the robe of the ghost of christmas present. "The boy is ignorance and this girl is want beware of them both ... but most of all beware of this boy. For on his brow i see... DOOM." Dickens personifies ignorance and want as orphaned children this exemplifies how victorian society turns their back on those in need to focus on themselves. Dickens spells out that it will be the doom (which comes from the boy who grow into men) of man if something is not done and in a more modern context it would say 1. Tell lies about those who try to point out the problem. 2. Or admit there is a problem to gain voters but do nothing thus magnifying the problem. 3. And wait for it to get so bad that it brings on the end. Ignorance and Want are important, yes, but it is the future that they bring that is the big picture issue because children like this don't just continue to the cycle, they grow it until the end of that society or even civilization itself and, as mentioned, will come from the boys.
